Hi Meg, The Alford name is interesting. I have an Elford line in Devon, England from the early 1800's that is mystery in my tree. I haven't made much head way but now I could how the spelling could changed or recorded wrong. No suggestions on my end, just a little commentary :) Tammy -----Original Message----- From: Meg Greenwood Sent: Monday, September 26, 2011 4:51 PM To: DONEGALEIRE@rootsweb.com Subject: [DONEGALEIRE] Alfords in Donegal Have had some great luck lately in finding the family of Edward MORROW who wed Rachel MORROW about 1800 probably Donegal. I know some about Rachel from her Death Registration in Campsie, Stirlingshire, 1855, the first year of Civil Registration in Scotland. More questions were asked of the Informant that year than in any hear since. The Informant was a son, John MURRAY [name spelled MURRAY in the 1841 census, a few short years after they arrived in Campsie. Edward's parents were John MORROW and Mary BURNETT. An Australian Researcher and I met about a month ago online and have put together the children of Edward and Rachel who left Donegal for Campsie, Stirlingshire, then Glasgow. What I'm now wanting to find are Rachel's mother's ALFORD line. To date, finding any ALFORDs has been difficult at best. Rachel was reported to have been born Killymard and using her age at death, it would be about 1806. To add a layer of difficulty to the search, her reported father's name is the same as her husband's name....Edward MORROW. Have checked the earliest record I can find of the Killymard area, that would be the 1821 census included in the book 'Killymard, Ancient and Modern'. No ALFORDs are listed. Here is what the 1855 Death Registration had for her information. 1855 was the ONLY year the Informant was asked to give names and ages for all the deceased children, living or dead. And they wanted the age of the child at their death. A wealth of information. Edward wed twice more before he died 1877 in Calton, Glasgow. He and Rachel had 8 children, 4 born Donegal, 4 born Campsie. Advice for finding ALFORDs is what I'm now seeking. THANKS - Meg Greenwood / Oklahoma USA --------- 1855 Deaths, entry #7. Bob You could create a gmail account (their quota's are huge) and forward all your mail to gmail for that period. Most email systems will let you set a switch to delete mail once forwarded. you can turn that switch off when you return and continue to forward your mail there and you'd also have an archive that is very searchable. Hello, I have just been reading about the National Library in Dublin, etc. Here are a couple of URL's of interest: _http://www.genealogyintime.com/index.html_ (http://www.genealogyintime.com/index.html) _http://bi-gen.blogspot.com/2011/09/irish-warnings.html_ (http://bi-gen.blogspot.com/2011/09/irish-warnings.html) Joan
Hi all, I posted a lot of info on these "new" databases on the CoTyroneIreland list earlier today -- see the archives of that list for the full details. The short version is, of the 7 "new" databases Ancestry announced, 4 are copied from the LDS site (FamilySearch.org - free) and the 3 "RC parish records" are predominantly Meath, some also have a bunch of Roscommon, and the rest of the data in the databases is not explained (no counties / parishes mentioned in the source notes), so I'm guessing is "scattered." Chances are, there are few (if any) Donegal records. I don't know where the 3 RC register databases came from originally, but I doubt it's a new extraction by Ancestry. Maybe it's a subset of the IGI? The BVRI2? Some other group's extractions? The only source info says "National Library of Ireland" but clearly (from news reports of the NLI being upset) Ancestry did not do this in conjunction with the NLI. Since the other 4 were merely repackaging of existing databases, I'm guessing these 3 were, too. So, Bob, chances are, you've already searched this in another incarnation on (an)other site(s) and that's why you haven't found anything new. Hope that helps. Claire K. Hi All, Just a note to inform you that 40M new Irish records have been put on-line for viewing if you happen to have a membership. The URL below will give you some of the details and the legal implications of their actions. I have checked the site and they do have the info/records on-line, they include 433,560 historical Irish Catholic parish records dating from between 1742 and 1884. Once again my GGF is not listed in those records for Donegal, guess I will have to wait for more to be uploaded by "someone" or some other organization.................................:-) Take a look at the URL: http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/ireland/2011/0922/1224304521506.html I will be away for the next few weeks so am unable to assist anyone with the above records, maybe later Have a great day Bob CDN

Hello, Probably for 10 yrs., I've been wanting to find out where my HANNAH and RITCHIE ancestors were living in County Donegal, Ireland. The information was just not available to me, from my research at home. For a year, I have not been able to do much research because of my husband's serious illness last winter. He is now almost recovered, so I can start posting queries on my many "brick walls" and "concrete-block walls." I haven't posted about my great-grandmother's parents for a while. But I decided to post a query about them on the Ireland Message Board this week. Voila ! Very helpful researchers did some look-ups for me and found out that William HANNAH's family and Andrew RITCHIE's family were living in small "beach" towns in the inner corner of Donegal Bay. The HANNAH family was in Rossnowlagh, and the RITCHIE family was in Creevins, both just south of Donegal-town. William HANNAH was born in 1828 there, and his parents were William HANNAH and Mary Ann (unknown). Eliza RITCHIE was born in 1837, and her parents were Andrew RITCHIE and Isabella (unknown). In addition, the researcher found out they had 2 other children, William and Isabella, younger than Eliza. William and Eliza went to Glasgow, Scotland, and married there in Dec. 1854 (rec. Jan. 1855). They had a daughter, Mary Ann, in 1856, and a daughter, Elizabeth, in 1857. In the summer of 1857, the family migrated to Massachusetts. Elizabeth was 3 mos. old and arriving in a basket. The couple had several more children after arriving, but had lost their oldest daughter when she was young. When Elizabeth grew up, she married William KERR, who was born in the Prov. of Quebec. He had come down ~1874 and they married near Boston in 1876. William and Elizabeth KERR mostly lived in Everett and Malden and had 6 children. By the way, William's parents were Robert KERR and Elizabeth HENDERSON, born 1827 in Canada. Even though they had surnames from Scotland, their parents were born in County Sligo, Ireland, in the 1780 to 1805 timeframe. And, Patrick KERR and William HENDERSON were referred to as "Irishmen" where they lived. Just an FYI for you. Those Petty Sessions records are great reading - they are sort of like reading a local gossip column! I've been collecting them for a couple of years now and the only thing that slows me down, getting them onto my website, is I get distracted from transcribing when reading the descriptions of the offences - most would today be considered VERY petty :-) Thanks to Meg, I have a good collection of them now - all from the period between the 1850s through to the late 1870s. Here's what's online - Dunfanaghy Petty Sessions Nov 1851 - Dec 1855 - http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~donegal/dunfanaghyps.htm Letterkenny Petty Sessions July/August 1858 - http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~donegal/1858lettps.htm Ballintra Petty Sessions Dec 1863 - Dec 1864 - http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~donegal/ballintraps1.htm Glenties Petty Sessions Oct 1857 - Dec 1858 - http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~donegal/glentiesps.htm And there are still thousands of page images on my computer for these - Falcarragh Mar 1870 - Jan 1879ish More Letterkenny Ardara Petty Sessions Ballyshannon Petty Sessions Stranorlar Petty Sessions Along with the Petty Sessions are the Dog Licence Registers - my personal favorite! These are from the 1860s and name the owner, his townland and describe the dog................handy in locating people and they bring another element into the research............Milford is very good for 1866 as for a year there, they even recorded the names of the dogs! Most popular names were Captain, Prince, Watch, Lion, and Diamond for the working dogs and Flora, Topsy, etc for lapdogs. Hi Meg, think for 302 and 343 the townland is Rossnowlagh. In this instance, for 376 think its more likely to be pounds (currency was pounds, shillings and pence/£.s.d/L.S.D). 6 pounds seems to have been a pretty hefty fine, would have taken a long time to earn that kind of money back then. Makes interesting reading. Bernie.
What an interesting set of records to find, Meg. Thanks for sharing them. Regarding 'mud', as one would expect mud on unsealed roads, and this seems to have been a pile or heap or load of something, I wonder if it might be 'muck' (manure?). Purely guessing here. Thanks again for posting it. Ray in oz ----- Original Message ----- From: "Meg Greenwood" <scotquester@bartnet.net> > Sorry, "Deward" on #363 is actually EDWARD. Have obtained a film for Petty Sessions for the Ballintra area. These have entries of accusations between citizens and also between officers and citizens. Brief description of offense and a notation of fine if any. Mostly interested in the noted residence for the people involved. I have written down a few of interest because of a surname or a residence and decided these were interesting enough to post. Placenames are extremely hard for me to read as I am not familiar with them, so I apologize before you read them. Also I have a question on one involving mud left in the road.... yes, it says mud. #284 - Sept 20, 1864...Bernard DEARY of Rothneny, Farmer [complaintant]. Biddy DEARY of Faiagh [defendant]. Permitting 3 sheep to wander on his property. [looks like it happened again the following May, read the last one]. #302 - No, 18, 1864...Daniel DEERY of Rossneulagh? [defendant] Debt to be paid to Wm Thompson, Esq. #334 - 15 Dec, 1864...Mary DEERY of Rockhill a married woman. Edward DEERY of Douies? Davies? Debt payment. #343 - 10 Jan, 1865...Daniel DEERY of Rossnalagh? Complaint of refusal to pay a debt. #346 - [missed date] Constable charging Robert BARTLEY Jr. of Tesmanum? Mountain of assaulting Barnard DEERY of Rathkineny. 2m prison. #363 - 7 Feb 1865...John Ward of Rockhill, Farmer [complaintant] Deward DEERY, Farmer [defendant]. Allowing mud to sit a road for several days becoming an inconvenience to the public. [would enjoy an explanation of this offense...Meg] #376 - 20 Mar 1865...Michael McNAMARA of Ballintra, Constable against Bess TROWER, Widow in Pollnaranny for her allowing distillation on her property. Given a choice of paying a fine of 6 [pounds? punts? whatevers] or 3m imprisonment. [this must have been a really bad offense !...Meg] #401 - 16 May 1865...Bernard DEERY of Rathkeeny, Farmer [complaintant] Biddy DEERY, Widow of Faiagh. Patrick DEERY witness for Bernard. Allowing 2 sheep, 1 lamb and 2 pigs on his pasture. Payment charged and also a fine. -------------------------------------------- Hard to read in places but most interesting !
