    2. I received a an email from the Centre from Migration Studies today which included this paragraph and link and wondered if Listers would like to explore it along with me or let us know just how useful it might be in our hunt for ancestors if they have already used it. It does appear to have real live documents in it and they are free!! The major digitisation project that we were engaged in with Queen's University and other partners, 'Documenting Ireland: People, Parliament and Migration' (DIPPAM), was launched on 21 March 2011 and is in popular use at http://www.dippam.ac.uk/. 1. [DONEGALEIRE] Religious tolerance mid to late 1700s
    2. Robert Sutherland
    3. Hi all. The recent discussion dealing with religion (Spot the mistakes) reminded me of a post I made several years ago (2002). I have reread the post and replies and realize that I have some additional questions. My post was “In the area of Culdaff, Inishowen, there is a story of a minister named SUTHERLAND (my ancestor) who visited the Church of Ireland minister, William Elwood, rector of the parish from 1732 until 1785. This window of time for the visit is very old and fairly large. In searching for this minister ancestor, my assumption was that he was either of the Church of Ireland or the Church of Scotland. I have contacted the Church of Ireland and have been told that there was no minister named Sutherland during those years. However, the records of the Church of Scotland show six candidates for the Sutherland minister in that time frame. Before I attempt to go any further into the Church of Scotland's records, I would like to get an idea of how likely it is that the Sutherland minister was of the Church of Scotland. My understanding (perhaps mistaken) of those times was that there was little religious tolerance, none between Protestant and Catholic, and little, if any, between one Protestant denomination and another. So, in those days, was it likely that ministers of different denominations would visit each other? If so, was one denomination more likely than others to have ties to the Church of Ireland?” I did receive a couple of replies. The first was ” You would probably need to consult texts of the period. My understanding is that it varied from place to place. For example there is evidence that the Scots and Presbyterians in Derry during the Siege were allowed to worship in the Chapel of Ease in Derry Cathedral - the bastion of the Anglican church. If you read the Laggan Presbytery books by Alexander Lecky some Presbyterian meetings were broken up and ministers arrested. As to meetings with CofI clergy, well, it probably depended on the locale. Presbyterians or anyone , if they wanted their children to inherit, had to get married in the parish (Anglican) church - otherwise the children were declared 'Bastards' and could not legally inherit. That might have been one reason for a Presbyterian to consult an Anglican clergyman. “ As I understand the scenario, the Sutherland minister was Scottish and was visiting Rev. Elwood and, in fact, staying at Rev. Elwood’s rectory in Redford Glebe. The second reply was “Another possibility is that he was an Anglican (C of I or C of E) minister of the Methodist (Wesleyan) movement, which did not become a separate denomination with its own clergy until the 19th Century in Great Britain or Ireland.” If “he was an Anglican (C of I or C of E) minister of the Methodist (Wesleyan) movement” does that mean he would not be listed as a minister of the Church of Ireland (which I have already looked into)? Is there a list of ministers of the Church of England spanning the time in question – i.e., 1732 – 1735? Are there other Protestant denominations that keep lists of Ministers that far back? So, if there is anyone who can add any light on this I would be greatly appreciative. Thanks for reading. Bob Sutherland

    2. Hi Julian, The beauty of the IFHF database is that unlike the GV and the Census databases, it will search for and return alternative spellings (of the main name). However, it is not magic so yes, it may not see such wild variations as McConnaghy for McConkey and you do have to try some alternative spellings. Btw, spelling variations are usually due more to the fact that the people giving the info were not literate (rather than the one writing it) and so did not know or care how the name was spelled. Also, there was no such thing as standardized spelling until as late as the 1890s. Don't forget to use the advanced search in IFHF as well so that you can insert more data to narrow down the search - BUT, this time, it is very fussy about spellings so it is best to confine yourself to the Christian names. Boyd Gray http://familytrees.genopro.com/boydgray26/Boyd/default.htm http://www.westulstergenealogy.com/ http://preview.tinyurl.com/yk7gckr SNIP Just tried the IFHF.. stumbled over a slight hitch I hadn't expected. Spelling. McConkey could be McConnaghy or any point in between depending on how literate the writer was and/or how good their hearing. This could be a LONG job, but then isn't everything in genealogy? :) Kind regards, Julian

Julian, mothers and eggs are probably appropriate but, as McConkey is NOT a common name, can you not search the GV and the Censuses in Co Derry and find Hannahs and Williams McConkey and see if there were any Murphys nearby. As long as you are working in the second half of the 19th century and not the first, it should be possible to find your people. Have you used IFHF (Rootsweb) to search for the birth of Hannah to William McConkey and Mary Murphy in Co Derry? 1. Re: [DONEGALEIRE] Spot the mistakes - P.S.
    2. Hi Loretta, Yes, that makes total sense. Anglican is interchangeable with Church of England and the Church or Ireland is the Irish branch of that. Episcopal means "church", derived from Latin, I think, so it is often used as a synonym for the Church of England or Anglicans. The Church of England was created by Henry VIII in the 1530s when he split with the Roman Catholic church over the annulment of his marriage to Catherine of Aragon. As such it became the established church in England but its doctrines were not that dissimilar to the Catholic church. The Presbyterians on the other hand, had considerable doctrinal differences with the Catholic church, and my Presbyterian parents' and their generation often spoke scathingly of their Church of Ireland neighbours as only having a "paper wall" between them and the Catholics. They weren't proper Protestants in other words! The nuances of these religious differences are always hard for those outside of Ulster to understand. Even though both Presbyterians and Catholics were discriminated against by the Church of England dominated governments for over 300 years, and although my parents may have sneered at their Church of Ireland neighbours, nevertheless, when push came to shove, both the Presbyterians and the Church of Ireland were Protestants and both discriminated against Catholics. Those were sectarian times, you will understand, and have largely disappeared now, thank goodness. Hope this clarifies things a little. And explains why a Church of Ireland church (often called a Parish Church) should not be confused with a Presbyterian church. Boyd Gray http://familytrees.genopro.com/boydgray26/Boyd/default.htm http://www.westulstergenealogy.com/ http://preview.tinyurl.com/yk7gckr -----Original Message----- From: Loretta Layman [mailto:lynneage@h-o-l.com] Sent: 08 December 2011 21:46 To: boydgray26@utvinternet.com; DONEGALEIRE@rootsweb.com Subject: RE: [DONEGALEIRE] Spot the mistakes - P.S. The couple I was studying at the time were Presbyterians, but the wife somehow ended up in her old age living in New York's Trinity Chapel Home for Aged Women, owned and operated by Trinity Church. That church's history says the Protestant-Episcopal denomination was founded by Anglicans in Manhattan and that the Anglican Church was often called simply Church of Ireland. Does that make sense? 2. Hi Bernie, I cannot pass up the opportunity of spreading the word about the Reverend William Boyd - yet again. The Rev William Boyd was the minister of nearby Monreagh Presbyterian Church from 1725 to 1771. However, because of the laws of the time, everyone had to be buried in a Church of Ireland Church (that persecution I was mentioning) and so this man is actually buried not in his own church where he ministered for 46 years but in the rival Taughboyne Parish Church (flat gravestone by back entry). This man is very important because it was he who led the first major emigration of Presbyterians from Ireland to America in 1718, and thus began the mass migration which has created such a bond between Ulster and America, This is celebrated at the Monreagh Heritage Centre, his old manse. I should also add that The Rev Boyd came from Macosquin, beside the River Bann in County Derry.... Which just happens to be the parish where my great great grandmother, Mary Boyd (1810-85) was born, lived and died. So, I am claiming the good Rev as my direct ancestor! Who could prove me wrong?!! 2. Loretta, I have lived in Ireland all my life so I know that the Presbyterians (myself included) would be absolutely horrified to be called the Church of Ireland. It was never simply called the Church of Ireland. The Church of Ireland persecuted the Presbyterians for centuries, which was why so many left for the States etc. You better find the book and reread it. Spot the non deliberate mistakes in this page from the Find a Grave website: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=cr&CRid=2413355&CScn=taughboyn e& This is terrible!! For those who do not know the area, this is NOT Taughboyne Presbyterian Church. It is Taughboyne Parish Church and as such is a Church of Ireland Church, NOT a Presbyterian church at all. And second, the map suggests a location south of Omagh which puts it in Tyrone, not Donegal at all! 1. [DONEGALEIRE] Church records on IFHF
    2. Simple question: Does Rootsweb (IFHF as was) have ALL the baptismal and marriage records from any church which it offers on its drop down list (barring transcription errors, of course)? In other words, is there no point in me bothering the priest and paying 20 yoyos to see the Drumoghill Chapel Records in Raymoghy if I have searched the Rootsweb site thoroughly?
