    3. Marilyn I don't know if you have tried records at the National Archives in Kew in London. www.pro.gov.uk I have not researched a revenue boatman but you might find the leaflet on Customs , Excise and Revenue gives you more places to look. I did some research on a Customs Officer and found his application with father's signature and details of birth. You can also if you are lucky, find where children were born when you find the various postings - Customs officers were posted all over the country. You also might want to try searching Admiralty records for the seafaring brothers - although they might not have been in the navy. 1. [DONEGALEIRE] RE: COLE and COLL
    2. J de Montalk
    3. My research interest in Donegal is with the COLE or COLL family, possibly of Ramelton. My gt.gt.grandfather was Charles COLE, (or COLL) born in Ireland about 1791. We have a possible entry for his marriage to Jenny/Jane[t] SHAW in the Church of Ireland in Ramelton in 1817. Children of the marriage were: Catherine b.1817 Cecelia b.1819 John b.1822 Jane b.1823 Samuel b.1825 Charles b.1826 Sarah 27 May 1829 (my gt.grandmother) The family moved to Kirkcudbright (Jane[t]'s birthplace) about 1830, and 3 more children were born there. I'd be most interested to hear from anyone with connections to this family. Jeanette (NZ).

    1. [DONEGALEIRE] HAMILTON, WILSON
    2. Marilyn Hesse
    3. It's been awhile since I posted my names: James HAMILTON, a revenue boatman, married Mary (Jane) WILSON in Killybegs, Co. Donegal on March 25, 1813. Their son, James Ezekiel HAMILTON, was born February 20, 1816 in Killybegs. Other children were John (a sea captain, born 1835 in Co. Down), Alexander (Sandy)(also a mariner), Thomas, Elizabeth, and Anne. Except for James Ezekiel, there is no record of their births in the Killybegs Church. John, Elizabeth, and Alexander were living in Liverpool in 1859, as were three of their aunts, Matilda, Betty, and Susannah. Because of the strong Liverpool connection I suspect that the revenue boatman James HAMILTON may have been born in England, not in Killybegs. James Ezekiel HAMILTON emigrated to Crawford Co. in western Pennsylvania in 1838 to help his widowed aunt, Mariah COOK, care for her farm. 1. [DONEGALEIRE] Martin, Boyle, McCarron, Rowe & O'Hara
    2. Ellen Langan
    3. Reposting: My g-grandfather Neil Martin shows up in the 1901 Census, with his wife Bridget (Boyle) and daughters. (I have traced some of the Boyles to Johnstown, Penn where Edward and his wife died in the Flood) Son John (Johnny) Martin, my grandfather is missing from the Census. I understand from family lore that he lived at the priests residence and worked there. In 1912 he married Ellen McCarron (parents James McCarron and Annie O'Hara) in Scotland. My mother was born in Cambuslang and the family settled in Argyle Street, Glasgow. My grandfather was a railway surfaceman who was killed on the job - a switch was "accidentally" changed and the train hit him (according to family, at the time he was working to start union) I obtained a copy of my grandmother's death certificate (1931) but there is no trace of my grandfather. I believe he was killed around 1938. Unfortunately, I do not know which line he worked with and can't trace where he was buried. (I am on the Railway list but so far! no luck) I would very much appreciate any help. Take care, Ellen

    1. [DONEGALEIRE] Wiley and Porter families of Derry region of Donegal
    2. Leigh, Sharon
    3. I'm looking for ancestors and siblings of Samuel Wiley (Wylie) b. ca. 1803 and his wife, Sarah Porter b. ca. 1810-1815. They were married in Muff parish, Co. Donegal in May 1847 and came to the U.S. in July? 1847 aboard the "Venice." They came into Philadelphia port and wound up on the Indiana/Ohio border near Ft. Recovery, Mercer Co., Ohio, according to the 1850 U.S. Census. Sarah's brother was Alexander Porter who also lived in the same region as did Samuel's brother, Joseph Wiley and family. Joseph and family requested church entry in 1869. Samuel and Sarah's first born son was named Moses-I don't know if that helps with the ancestary or not. I don't know if they followed Irish naming patterns. Sharon Leigh (nee Wiley) slnelson@indiana.edu

    2. Carol Queen
    3. Hi All, Here are the surnames I am researching in Donegal. So far, the only townland I have found my folks is in Lettermackaward . Anyone else researching there? Maurice Cannon b.1781 d. 1881 in Lettermackaward. His wife was Mary "Bridget" O'Donnell b. ca1830. I believe this was his second wife and that his first wife was Hannah McKelvey. This is based on death certificates for several of his children, who have listed different mothers and there is a big time span between the first child's birth and the 3rd child. One was born in 1840, then 1841 and then 1847. They had the following children: 1. James b. 1840 married Anne McGeehan-remained in Bellanaboy, Lettermackaward 2. John b. 1841 came to the USA 3. William b. 1847 came to the USA died in PA... lists Hannah McKelvey as mother 4. Charles b. January 1855 (my ggranddad) came to USA Hazleton, PA lists Bridget O'Donnell as mother-married Ellen McMenamin 5. William b. January 1860 came to the USA Hazleton, PA lists Bridget O'Donnell as mother-married Celia Kelly 6. Patrick b. 1861 married Anne Sweeney remained in Bellanaboy 7. Mary b. March 16,1870 came to the USA died in PA. never married There may be other children, but these are the ones I have been able to locate so far as belonging to Maurice. I thought it a bit unusual that there would be two sons named William. I have speculated that it may have been because Maurice had two different wives. Here are all the surnames that I am researching in Donegal. CANNON, BRESLIN, McMENAMIN, McMONIGAL, BOYLE, GALLAGHER, BRENNAN & O'DONNELL Carol --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. 1. [DONEGALEIRE] DONEGALEIRE: CHANGES
    2. Carol Queen
    3. Hi All, I just wanted to let everyone know that I have made a change to our list messages. If you notice, when you receive a message from the list it has DONEGAL as the subject line. I have changed that subject line to DONEGALEIRE... so if you receive a message from this list, it will be identified as Donegaleire. When I first applied for this list, there were absolutely no resources for Donegal. However, in the last few years I am really pleased to see that there have been several lists, websites and other resources added to Rootsweb for Donegal. Due to this increase in activity, it has become difficult to distinguish which resource messages are coming from, so hence I will append our messages with DONEGALEIRE, to distinguish it from the other Donegal utilities. This increase in resources enhances everyone's chances of finding that elusive information available in Donegal. It is so exciting to see the whole world being opened up to us via the computer. I hope everyone finds this change helpful. And if you haven't posted to the list in awhile, this might be a good time to identify your surname inquiries. Remember when sending queries to the list, DO NOT hit REPLY. Always start and original message and in the subject line put some clues as to what your query is about. For any new folks, I will be sending a separate email with a query as an example. The more info you can provide, the more successful you will be. Any questions, please send privately to me at postalq@grnco.net Blessings, Carol-Listowner --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. 1. [DONEGAL] James WRAY
    2. Helen, this is a long shot, but is there anything in the naturalization records of Delaware Co. about a James WRAY? He was born October 1797/8 @ Co. Donegal, but I've never been able to find out what town or village. He eventually settled in Philadelphia, where he spent the rest of his life, but I don't know if he went there directly or possibly went elsewhere first. I know he was in Phil. by 1826, as that's when he married. Are there any WRAYs listed? If so, it would be worth my while to get a copy of that census and see if his brother, who came a year after James. They were in business together in Philly, so possibly they were both in Delaware Co. first Thanks a lot for your very generous offer!! Barbara in MO (but originallly from NYC)

    3. What a helpful gesture! Thank you! Please see if there is an Andrew LOCKARD/LOCKHART. If you see anyone with that surname, I'd appreciate having the information. Janet Lockard "Success is a journey, not a destination." -----Original Message----- From: HMWEBBER@aol.com [mailto:HMWEBBER@aol.com] Sent: Friday, October 24, 2003 1:58 AM To: DONEGALEIRE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [DONEGAL] Naturalization Index Records 1795-1860 -- Delaware Co., PA (only) Hi list, I will do a lookup in the Naturalization Index Records from 1795-1860 for Delaware Co., PA. Surprisingly, I found in these record, many of the Irish immigrants were born in Co. Donegal! I'm sure you have heard the term "Little Italy." Well, here in Delaware Co., PA the term "a touch of Donegal" would be very befitting. Please place on the subject line "only one" person's name. Do NOT send me a list of names & make sure the person immigrated before 1857! Please put the surname in capital (LARGE) letters so I can tell if it is the person's given name or surname: Example: James THOMAS or THOMAS, James -- NOT James Thomas. Women were NOT Naturalized in this time period -- they became a citizen if & when their husband did or when they married a man who had already became a citizen or was a citizen. If a person lives in Philadelphia or Berks Co., PA, etc., they would NOT have come to Delaware Co., PA to file citizenship papers but if a person lives in Delaware Co. he may go to Phila. to file! Hence, going from the county level to the state/federal level to file.
