I have found ancestors on the 1851 Glasgow census ; as follows: Nancy Elliot H W 46 Donegal Margaret Elliot D U 22 " Stephen Elliot S U 18 " Jane Elliot D U 16 " James Elliot S U 14 Glasgow Robert Elliot S U 10 " Joseph Stopford Elliot S U 3 " Nancy, was known on later censuses as Ann Elliott (two tees). She lived to 92. Her husband was James Elliot(t) , deceased by 1851 Her parents were Robert Clark and Margaret , M.S. also Clark ,apparantly She was born 1804-1805 Can anyone tell me where I could search for Nancy/Ann's birth, her marriage to James; and the first three children's births, which were years 1829, 1833, 1835 ? Based on later generations, the family was probably Protestant. Son James above, likely was a member of the 78th Regiment of the Seaforth Highlanders in 1854. Note the unusual second name of the last child, Joseph Stopford Elliot(t) ; my great-grandfather. Other Irish names connected to this family are Neil, St. John, and Darroch. Any assistance would be much appreciated. Bob Elliott.
Hello to all, I’m up for any insight into my family line. I believe Michael SWEENEY, his wife Bridget MCCART and their three children came to Cleveland Ohio in 1840. Because the 1840 census only lists head of household it only lists Michael Sweeney, wife and two children. I have since come to believe that in March 1847 as listed on the NARA site Michael Sweeney, wife Bridget and two of their three children Mary and Alex are traveling to the U.S. with James Sharkey, wife (who was a Sweeney) and one year old daughter Ann Sharkey. What makes me think it’s my family is on the passenger list James, Mary, and Mary are on one page and one year old daughter Ann is 2 pages down listed with the Michael Sweeney family. Now I’m confused, do I have Michael Sweeney and family in 1840 Ohio census returning to get the Sharkey family? How likely was it Michael would earn enough passage as a Mason in Cleveland to return 7 years later to Ireland? Also why would they take 2 of their three children with them on this voyage back? In the 1900 Cleveland Ohio census Michael’s son Patrick is recorded as entering the country in 1840 so I’m not going on the 1840 census alone. I was mostly wondering the likelihood of a family returning in an effort to retrieve family? Any insight is appreciated, Thanks, Cindy --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Lindel: Thank you for placing your book list. It's wonderful to find them in one place - saves us a lot of "surfing." May I add a few from my own "wee" library in addition to some you listed? Maybe others can add to it also. The Story of The Rosses - by Ben O'Donnell The Battle Book of the O'Donnells by Douglas Chretien (out of print, but may find a copy where they sell out of print/rare books - that's how I got my copy a few years back) Paddy's Lament - Ireland 1846-1847 - Prelude to Hatred by Thomas Gallagher Though not exclusively about Donegal, it's an excellent source for detailing the ramifications and emotions of those terrible years in Irish history. The Famine Ships - The Irish Exodus to America by Edward Laxton Another on the famine and emigration of the Irish Emigrants and Exiles - Ireland and the Irish Exodus to North America by Kerby A. Miller Still another on the emigration I know I'll be adding some on your list to my library in the future. Thanks again God bless, Diann

Hello, I have a vague sort of question I'm hoping someone on this list might be able to help me with. I am researching my MCK lines in Donegal in the 1600s. Where can I check to see what kind of records are available? I've found online records here (I'll share the links in case someone else can use them): 1609 Pardon List http://members.aol.com/lochlan2/donegal4.htm 1630 Muster Roll http://members.aol.com/Manus/dngl1630.html 1665 Hearth Money Rolls http://members.aol.com/lochlan2/donega10.htm Is anyone aware of any other sources online? ANd if not online, where else should I target my search? Also, how common were wills in the late 1600s in Donegal? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks Jen McKemie
If anyone would like a look-up in the book"Exploring Family Origins in MountCharles, Inver, & Donegal Town", I would be glad to do so. Janice
Hello, I have been trying to help my friend learn more about his grandparents. One set of his grandparents was James GAVIN and Anna Mary Magdalene McLAUGHLIN who probably married in 1912 or 1913 in Cambridge or Waltham, MA (USA). James and Annie GAVIN lived their married life in Cambridge, MA, and had, perhaps, six children there. This month, through Census and Cemetery data, I have found a few more tidbits of information about James and Annie: Cemetery information shows that Anna Mary Magdalene McLAUGHLIN died in 1949 at Age 58, so that puts her birth year around 1890 or 1891. Census data shows that "Annie" came to the USA in 1908. This was taken from the 1920 Census for Massachusetts where she is shown with her husband and children. (James, 31, and Annie, 29) I am not able to find Annie in the 1910 Census for MA; but, if she arrived in MA in 1908, she should be there someplace. Someone on the MA List reminded me to check the Ellis Island records. I did that last night, and only came up with four Annie McLAUGHLIN's who would have been in the right age category, and who would have been arriving in the USA between 1907 and 1910. The only one who had connections to MA was an Annie who arrived in December 1907 at Age 20. She listed her last place of residence as: Donegal, Ireland. Her ethnicity was listed as British, Irish, which matches up to Census information which showed that her father was born in England and her mother in Ireland. She was listed as a seamstress, and she listed her "contact" as .. Patrick McLAUGHLIN, father, in Charlestown, MA. I tried finding Patrick in the Census data I have access to, and I could not find one who would have been the right age to have had a daughter, Age 20. But, I did find one who was living in Charlestown, MA, in the same general time period. That was a quick search last night; I will spend more time looking for Patrick during the coming week. ...Cemetery information shows that James GAVIN died in 1943 at Age 54. This means he was born in 1889. Census information helped me to locate the family he grew up in. The 1900 Census for MA showed Peter and Margaret GAVIN, both Age 40, living in Waltham, MA. They had children: William, Mary, James, Agnes, Joseph, Margaret, and Elizabeth (15 to 2). In this Census, Peter and Margaret were both listed as being born in Ireland, and they stated that they had arrived in MA in 1883.... Peter and Margaret GAVIN had been married for 16 years in the 1900 Census, which puts their marriage date around 1884. This means that they married approx. one year after they arrived in Massachusetts. (I have no idea what Margaret's maiden name was.) The 1910 Census showed Margaret as a widow, and it showed that they had had another son, Peter, in 1901. So, sometime between 1902 and 1909, James GAVIN had died and left his widow with 8 children. The 1920 Census showed that the family had probably moved, as the only members of the family still in Waltham, MA, were the two youngest daughters, then Ages 24 and 21, living in a boarding house. The 1920 Census showed James M. GAVIN, 31, and Annie GAVIN, 29, with three of their children: Laura, Helen, and James. They also had a niece, Florence McLAUGHLIN, 13, and James' older brother, William GAVIN, 35. I believe they remained living in Cambridge, MA, until their deaths in the 1940's. I just noticed that their children would have been only in their 20's when their parents died. However, I just remembered that there were three more children born to James and Annie, and they would have been teen-agers when their parents died. (George, Gerald, Frederick GAVIN; I wonder where they lived after their mother's death.) FYI: There was another GAVIN family in Cambridge, MA, at the same time. They were David and Margaret (McDONALD) GAVIN who had been born in Nova Scotia. A little investigating showed that this GAVIN family had come from Ireland but had been in Nova Scotia for 50 years before migrating to the USA. They had a son, Lauchlin GAVIN. ..In summary, I am looking for: Annie McLAUGHLIN, Ireland to Mass./USA, ~1908, Age ~20 (possible father, Patrick McLAUGHLIN, to USA ???) James GAVIN, b1889, MA, whose parents, Peter and Margaret (?) GAVIN migrated to Mass./USA ~1883 They seem to have married here in ~1884, or they came here as ..newlyweds. Thank you for your time. Betty (near Lowell, MA, USA) P.S. My friend's other set of grandparents were from the Azores. They came to Massachusetts/USA around the same time as the Irish grandparents. :o) "There are two lasting bequests we can give our children; one is roots, the other is wings." Lindel, thanks for such a great book list. Wouldn't it be fun to have them all in a wee library with big comfy chairs by a fireplace, so we could sit around reading them and sharing them? Since I'm reasonably sure I have a connection to Killymard, I plan to e-mail Margaret Graham concerning the book "Killymard, Ancient & Modern", and perhaps get it for myself for Christmas.......shouldn't we each get something we really would like, and how better to be sure we get it!!! Nancy, The only way to access the Indexes, birth, deaths or marriages for Ireland are at the FHC in your area. Most FHC's keep the indexes for Ireland, and the UK in-house. They also have others depending on where you are located, our branch also stocks the Cdn and USA along with some Western European countries. You can also look at sites set up by individuals, such as Lindel, Carole, and myself along with many others. Some, such as my site are limited to certain surnames, Lindel and Carol have more data, they will post most data that is sent to them, so will I but have not rec'd any todate. My data, census and some BMD are also on Lindel's site. Some individuals also have the BIVRI #2 disks from the FHC, you can purchase these from the FHC/LDS site http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp There are a number of pay per view sites on the web but the FHC is the best place to start your research. They have most ot the UK copied and the price is very reasonable, the index films are free at our LDS/FHC branch and the register films are $5.50 for each for 30 day, they have to be ordered from Salt Lake.. Lindel a chara, You have such a fantastic website. I will email you an excel document with Malin Head baptisms. Most of the baptisms are for Dohertys and Houtens. It is not a complete listing, but is a substantial list. My daughter is in the process of transferring everything from our old computer to a new one, but due to the antiquated age of the old computer we are having massive headaches. Once the transfer is complete and everything is up and running on the new computer will send you some more pictures of Malin Head and Ballyhillion. In the 1901 Census there is the following entry for College Street, Ballyshannon - No 26 Mc Gowan, Edward and Catherine, Thomas (Tailor). In the 1911 Census there are no Mc Gowans in College Street and Mc Brides in No. 26. Regards, John Cunningham.
My grandmother was Mary Elizabeth BEATTIE. She came to New Zealand at the end of WW1 and before 1923. Her father and mother were John BEATTIE, Farmer of Drumhaggart, Parish of Burt and Cassie (Catherine) McNAUGHER daughter of Joseph McNAUGHER and Margaret ANDERSON. John's father was to the best of my knowledge also John BEATTIE. Cassie and John were reputed to have 11 or 13 children, my grandmother being the only girl. Here are some others I have come across in the Census. The children were orphaned before 1901. 1901 Census - Drumhaggart Joseph BEATTIE born 1887 aged 14 was living in nearby Muff Parish with a MOODY family. William John BEATTY born 1888 living with James McNAUGHER, Widower, his great Uncle. James wife was Margaret WILEY. I have a few more details about her, if anyone wants them. William was described as a Farm Servant aged 12. Also living with James was James BEATTIE Orphan aged 7. Andrew BEATTY born 1891 was lving with George HUNTER aged 67, Farmer and Jane his wife aged 63. Mary Elizabeth BEATTY born 1895 (my grandmother) was living with George DONAGHY 28 and Margaret DONAGHY his wife and their daughter Evaline DONAGHY aged 6. George and Margaret were born in Co. Tyrone. When the Ulster Covenant was signed in 1912, the DONAGHY's were living in Londonderry and Mary Elizabeth seems to have been with her brother William John BEATTY also in Londonderry. All the above children were living in properties near or the same as were occupied by Wiley's and McNaughers in the 1857 Griffiths Valuation. All were Presbyterian. Cassie's father was listed as Joseph McNAUGHER, Retired Farmer, Widower aged 66, living with William DINSMORE aged 36, Farmer, Widower and William's two sons James aged 8 and Joseph aged 5. I presume William's wife was Eliza Ann McNAUGHER, Cassie's sister born 1869 died 1898 aged 30. Cassie also had a brother Thomas born 1865 who was a witness at her marriage to John BEATTIE. If anyone has any info. on ANY of the above names, I would be extremely grateful. You can go on to my web pages. There are some WILEY people from that area who are searching for their lines. It may be of help. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.co.nz/~maggiesirishkin/ Cheers, MAGGIE
Hi Sharon, I have Wiley's in Drumhaggart, Parish of Burt which is next to Muff. On my web site below are many references to Wiley in this area. Best do a search on Wiley as they are on many pages. My known ones are on the McNaugher and Beattie pages. I found it interesting you have a Moses. I have found on the IGI Moses Wiley marrying Mary Jane Dickson in 1847 and 1872 (same date both years). A Moses Wiley is on the 1857 Griffiths Valuation so I think the 1847 marriage is the correct one. Perhaps your Samuel and Moses were brothers. I have a Sarah Ann Dickson who was the daughter of Richard Wiley. She had my grandmother's brother William John Beattie living with her in the 1911 Census. The Beattie children were orphaned before the 1901 Census. I will put on about them in another e-mail to the list. Here is the URL. Hope it is of some use to you. If anyone knows of any of the names above, could you get in touch. These families have been a sticking point for a long time now. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~maggiesirishkin/ Cheers, MAGGIE on a beautiful spring evening in Aotearoa (New Zealand) The Leigh, Sharon wrote: > I'm looking for ancestors and siblings of Samuel Wiley (Wylie) b. ca. > 1803 and his wife, Sarah Porter b. ca. 1810-1815. My grandfather several greats back was born in 1950 in County Donegal. All I know is that he moved to the United States sometime before 1778. His name was James Moodey (our surname changed to Moody in the 1800's). Does anyone know of any Moodey's from there?
