Could you suggest a good map (preferably online) that would detail these smaller areas? Thanks! Regarding the position of Muineagh and Ballyheerin, they are a fair way north of Kilmacrenan and on a different road north from Letterkenny. They are around Mulroy Bay in Fanad, north of Milford, then north of Kerrykeel, then past Rosnakill and Kindrum. No doubt you will see this on a detailed map of northern Donegal. Ballyheerin is a small hamlet; Muineagh is the old townland name of the area. I travelled those lanes from England last month as part of my own family lived in Muineagh in the 1800s, a delightful part of Donegal. Alex
Sorry everyone, I forgot to mention that it would be for Griffith Valuation of Mountcharles and Donegal town. Janice
Hello Is anyone interested in the posting of the Griffith Valuation 1854-1864 or has someone already done so? Janice
Thank you! I tried it, and indeed came up with 6 hits--but no phone numbers and incomplete addresses. Call me greedy, but any additional suggestions for narrowing down an address that reads simply "Purt Dunfanaghy" or "Muineagh Ballyheerin"? Thanks again!! My thanks to all who so generously responded to my query about 1600s Donegal research. I'm learning quickly that this is a rather daunting prospect. Have to remember that patience IS a virtue...and persistance :-) I have another question for you more experienced researchers out there. Stateside here, I have had more than one brick wall toppled with the help of distant cousins--you know, putting what I know together with what they know and then kaboom! we have a breakthrough. I would like to start investigating descendants of my line that stayed in Donegal....I know of one cousin (with whom I correspond very irregularly) and he says that there are plenty in the area---how do I go about finding them? In the states, I would use the telephone directory. I tried Google, but could not come up with an equivalent...is it called something different? Any other suggestions? The one cousin I know is not very active online and for that and other reasons, I can't call on him....As you might have noticed, I'm not very well-versed with Irish research, either. My guys came over so long ago that I have been fortunate enough to limit my research tot he states! Thanks! Jen McKemie

Hello List, Can some kind person please let me know how to get into the archives, I would like to double check an earlier list that Janice posted. I have seen the instructions a thousand times and have printed a copy, which of course I can't find now that I need it, I am sure it is on my genealogy desk in some pile. This is a resend of message I sent about a week ago with partial answer to Jen McKemie's question. It never reached the list because of an address problem that our Listowner Carol Queen just pointed out and corrected for me. Jen - one other important primary document that you did not include in your list is the 1654 Civil Survey of Donegal - it is on line at http://members.aol.com/lochlan2/donsourc.htm JP ==================================== Jen - Are you aware of Rev. Francis Makemie who left Donegal in 1683 for Somerset County, Maryland and generally regarded as the founder of the Presbyterian Church in America? I don't know a lot of his personal family history, but I expect he is pretty well researched. From what I have read, he was born in 1658 at Ramelton of Scots parentage, enrolled at the University of Glasgow in February 1675/6, and was licensed in 1681. He died in 1708 and is buried in Accomac County on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. Makemie's emigration to Somerset was the result of a letter sent by its local leaders to the Presbytery of Laggan in 1680, asking for a "Godly minister" to serve the local populace. This was somewhat surprising in that it came from people who were either established church or Quakers, but Maryland had passed an Act of Religious Toleration in 1649 and was pretty unique, until the founding of Pennsylvania in 1682, as a place where various religious groups could co-exist peaceably. Francis Makemie was specially chosen for this task by the Presbytery of Laggan, but he did not come alone. He was accompanied or followed by other Presbyterians which led to the first recognizable Ulster Scot community in America. Several hundred of them were in Somerset by 1690, my own Polk/Pollock family among them. This movement abated after the Battle of the Boyne when the conditions impelling Presbyterians to leave Ulster were much changed. Makemie established many churches in the Eastern Shore area (the portions of Maryland, Delaware, Virginia and Pennsylvania between the Chesapeake Bay and Delaware Bay) and organized the first Presbytery in America in 1706. This community formed a nucleus that was in place to welcome and assist the later, much-larger migration of Ulsters Scots beginning in 1715 and continuing throughout the 18th century. I am sure you can find out more about Rev. Makemie by doing a Google search. Perhaps this will lead you to some additional information concerning your own McKemie line in 1600's. I am researching my MCK lines in Donegal in the 1600s. Where can I check to see what kind of records are available? I've found online records here (I'll share the links in case someone else can use them): 1609 Pardon List http://members.aol.com/lochlan2/donegal4.htm 1630 Muster Roll http://members.aol.com/Manus/dngl1630.html 1665 Hearth Money Rolls http://members.aol.com/lochlan2/donega10.htm Is anyone aware of any other sources online? ANd if not online, where else should I target my search? Also, how common were wills in the late 1600s in Donegal? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
