    3. Hello Jackie. In this sort of case, where we are working with transcriptions, I find it helpful to put myself into the situation of someone reading and trying to transcribe --- NOT typewritten wording -- but rather: words in running handwriting -- often unclear, often from blurred microfilm, microfiche, or photostat copies. In doing this, I try to visualise how the two different but similar names might look in such running writing -- and then it is often possible to see how the alternative reading occurred. Of course this is not a foolproof method, but it can be valuable in trying to move forward a little -- but will still need some other confirmation from a different source. Hoping that this helps. 3. You could also try www.1837online.com This has the official BMD from the Public Record Office. It will only give the GRO reference which enables you to order a certificate more cheaply than just giving ONS (Office of National Statistics) the approximate date of birth. The site does charge but it is a relatively small fee. I had a few units spare from my last foray on the site and I checked the Jul-Sep quarter for Barclay. No William. There was a William Barclay born in the next quarter Oct -Dec 1846 The reference is Vol 2 Page 457. Registrar's district was Stepney (an area in East London) You would need to order the certificate if you think it is your William. See www.statistics.gov.uk for costs etc. It may take some time if you are overseas as the on line ordering applies to UK residents. Once you have the location you can then search census records and local records. 3. Dear Vicky, Do you have the marriage certificate for your g.g.grandparents Thomas BARCLAY & Ellen BEVAN?That would probably be your best starting place, as it would give an address. Have you tried searching on the freebmd indexes http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/ These are not yet complete but you might find the entry you need. If that fails you could try searching on the same database for Thomas's birth entry. You'll then need to send for the appropriate certificate from England. If you find an address you could then try the 1851 census. Sometimes people on the list will search it for you, or you can order the film of the census from a LDS (Mormon) family History Centre. Hope this helps. My question: could this really be Carricknahorna, as Janice writes was the name of one of the villages in Ballyshannon? >> Jackie, I'd vote yes. Firstly, there are no other townlands in the Ballyshannon area which are even close in spelling. Secondly, I think I could create a scenario which could make the two names more similar.....especially, I can see how a tall "l" and a short "i" could merge to become the tall-short letter "h". The last two letters are tougher, but I think we're already close enough to call it "a match". Carricknahorna townland is quite large, at 2337 acres, and lies between 4 and 5 miles NE to ENE of Ballyshannon town, in Kilbarron civil parish.
