    2. Frank McGonigal
    3. Hi Alice I just wish that I knew where my McGonigals came from,I've been trying on and off for years to discover that. What I have is , Hugh McGonigal,b.c.1814,and Sarah Coyle. They appear in the 1861 census of Glasgow along with their son William aged 11,who was noted as born in Glasgow,so it means that they were in Scotland around 1850. I have a sneaking suspicion that they came from Inishowen in the northern part of Donegal. Hugh was a tailor by profession, his Death Cert.didn't give any parents because he died in the Glasgow Poor House and I guess nobody knew who they were. I haven't been able to find Sarahs death so far. William maintained the spelling MCGONNIGAL throughout his records,he could read and write according to his signature on those records. I'm very sorry I couldn't help you,Irish records are so scarce,it's difficult to do research there. By contrast my Scottish ancestors were easy to research,I got back to the mid 1700s without any problem. Good Hunting, Regards Frank P.S. My wifes McGARVEY family came from Ramelton in Donegal. ----- Original Message ----- From: <Aliceholt@aol.com> To: <DONEGALEIRE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, January 08, 2004 12:06 PM Subject: [DONEGALEIRE] Re: DONEGALEIRE-D Digest V04 #5 > Hello Frank, > > Did your McGonigals also come from County Donegal? 2. Hello Frank, Did your McGonigals also come from County Donegal? I've found this name as well as other spellings. They may be totally different lines, or not. I'm looking for Catherine McMonigal/McMonigle/McGonigal who married William Simpson before 1825. They lived at Culdaff, at the time they left Ireland, and came to St. John, New Brunswick in 1852. William died there the following year. Their children, surnamed Simpson, were: John (my gg grandfather born 1825 at Donaghmore), Margaret, William, Rebecca, Jacob, Isabelle, Mary Ann, and Catherine (born 1842 - age on the ship register was 10 in 1852). I don't know the correct birth order of the children. My John Simpson and his wife Elizabeth Jenkins, were married in 1851 at Strabane, near Elizabeth's home, and came to Philadelphia in 1852. Why they didn't go to NB or the parents and siblings come to the USA is puzzling. One of those mysteries we gen people try to solve :-) Any information from you or anyone on the list is very welcome. I'm glad to share what I have with anyone. And there was "old aunt Mary" living with them. Her birthplace was listed as Irish Free State. In addition, the 1930 census listed her date of immigration as 1907. Aha!!! I made a beeline to the Ellis Island records and did a search for Mary Cannon. I started looking at every Mary who might have been around 20-30 at the date of immigration (given the fact that these folks just don't really seem to know how old they are in the census reports). I hit paydirt on Mary Cannon, 30 years old, immigrated in 1905 and when I viewed the ships manifest records, it stated that she was coming from Donegal, Ireland to stay with her brother Charles in Hazleton, PA. Charles is my ggrandfather. Now I have proof positive that all those family rumours were correct and I know I have the right family in Donegal. 3. Hi All, I have been researching my Cannon, McMenamin, McMonigle, Gallagher and related families for almost 20 years.
