Re: Griffiths! What now? <SNIP> I found it. Now what do I do with the information? You can tell that I am new at this. Marilee <END SNIP> The best article that I've found on using the Griffiths Valuations is by James R. Reilly, CGRS and published in the Journal of The Irish At Home and Abroad. Luckily the LEITRIM-ROSCOMMON Genealogy Web Site have it online in Word Doc format and also in Adobe PDF. I have seen wording like '...owned by the heirs of Joe Bloggs....' on rent rolls. Can't say I've ever seen it on Griffiths though, but it could be there. I posted a similar message last year with no response, so I'll try again. I have Nancy, or Ann Clark born Donegal 1804-1805. Parents were Robert Clark and Margaret Clark, maiden surname apparantly also Clark. Sometime Nancy/Ann married James Elliott, probably in Donegal. First 3 children born Donegal, Margaret 1829,Stephen 1833, Jane 1835. Then 3 sons born Glasgow, Scotland, James 1837, Robert 1841, finally Joseph Stopford Elliott 1848.Son James above, was likely a member of the 78th Regiment of the Seaforth Highlander in 1854. Nancy was shown as Nancy on Glasgow 1851 census. Subsequent censuses and death certificate showed her name as Ann. She lived in Glasgow area until age 92. Her husband, James Elliott was deceased by 1851 census. Note unusual middle name of final child, "Stopford". Based on later generations, family was probably Protestant. Other Irish names connected with this family are Neil, St. John and Darroch. If anyone can suggest where I can search for this family's Donegal roots, I would appreciate it. Dear Listers, I really need your help............ I am seeking any information on my Great Grandfather. He was born in 1833-38 in Donegal. Came to Henderson, Kentucky around 1853. He was peddling Irish linens in the South for a time, went to New York Married (1) Isabella McLaughlin, had a son James and a daughter Isabella (Bell). The 1900 Census shows his sister Margaret living with him. At some point prior to 1853, while he was traveling with several men in his employee, he sold everything to those men after being robbed, and came to KY and bought 2000 Acres of land for "$1,500 down in gold". He then went back to NY for a short time and then back to KY to settle. He opened a tobacco warehouse and a mercantile. He sold goods and cured tobacco for many years. He died in Henderson in 1909 and is buried in the Nunn Cemetery. He was married twice more after Isabella. (2) Charlotte Hinton Nunn (My Great Grandmother) and (3) Lucy J. Moss. Both of Henderson KY and both buried in the Nunn Cemetery. I have a good deal of information on him after his arrival here, but nothing on his family or parents. We are going to Ireland to do some research in September and I am desperately trying to find out his parents name and what town in Donegal he came from. Since he had a bit of money when he arrived in this country, I doubt that he came over on a famine ship, but that is only an opinion. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Kathleen Porter McIntosh

Have updated the Griffith's Evaluation pages on my site with surnames beginning with "M". Note some of these Mc type names will be found on the individual surname pages, example McHugh on "H" page. There are fourteen (14) pages of M's. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hiflyte/index.htm ----------I have NO additional information on any of these names.----------- Visit the Valuation Office home page for their help in obtaining the maps and data of each name. http://www.valoff.ie/ Enjoy Bob Cdn.
Hello List Can anyone give me information on Portnason in the 1860's.Was it a fishing village or just an outer part of Ballyshannon ? My great grandfather Matthew William Montgomery left for Australia in 1863 on the ship The Spitfire. The ships records has his address as Portnason.Any information appreciated. Hi Pete The Brackey you mention is just across the river from my uncle's house. In fact my mother & her brothers & sisters used to go across stepping stones to the little school in Brackey that faces their house. I have taken many pictures of the school over the years. You couldn't cross now because the river is deep & fast flowing & the best reason is someone has removed the stepping stones. Best wishes Rose Mary In Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, UK Beside the North Sea
To all those who were interested in the location of this townland about 10 days ago, I received a good suggestion from Anne Campbell, who gave me a location in the Ardara area. Here is my response to her: .............................................................................. ............................................ >> Anne, Thanks for the letter. I went to my townland listings, and sure enough, Bracky is right there. It's a mile south of Ardara, right by the road going west to the Assarnacally waterfall. I've been through the townland (without realizing it, of course) several times. But I kept saying to myself, why didn't I notice this before? I read back over the original request, and it finally made sense. I had been restricting my search to the Barony of Raphoe, when the query mention the Diocese of Raphoe. As I don't do any genealogy, and my interests are Early Christian and some early Medieval sites.....I tend to ignore Dioceses and RC parishes. But I'll bet that Bracky is the place. I'll let Alex et all know. Thanks again. Pete .............................................................................. ...........................................
