    3. Thats good to have the info online but if you're after family who should have been in Stranorlar, Donaghmore, Taughboyne and a few other parishes don't worry if you can't find them in that index, because its not complete. For instance, the original Griffiths Valuation has 944 households in Stranorlar parish, not just 1 lonely Samuel Nicholls in Lettermakenny in that online index :-) The other two parishes I mentioned are short about 900 households each. Bob has a complete index by Surname at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hiflyte/griffith_evaluation_donegal.htm, which includes those missing households. 2. Hi Bob, I have tried to access the following surname records - Griffith's Valuation (1857) for Donegal surnames from Mc Paul to Purrines This page contains 624 surnames sorted by Surname, Parish and Location but have not been able to do so. I go to the website and I don't see this listed. Can you possibly direct me on how to access the surnames? I would like to thank you for all the help you give and the postings. It most certainly helps me with my research. Rose

    2. Lindel
    3. Its over! They should be pretty much back to normal now - I had a friend waiting on the strike to end and he sent this on 10 April - "We thought the postal dispute was settled - but it's not quite settled yet. The management of "An Post" tried to hire 200 casual workers for a period of three or four weeks to clear the backlog. The Postal Workers Union objected and trotted out an agreement that they negotiated some years ago, i.e., "that casual workers must be employed for a minimum of seven months" ! So negotiations are continuing and the backlog is being cleared slowly and the seals that were placed on post boxes were only removed a couple of days ago. The postal workers also have an agreement that anyone asked to work overtime (no matter how little) must be paid a minimum of three hours - presumably at the enhanced rate. One postal worker made ¬56,000 extra on overtime last year. No wonder An Post lost over ¬40million last year." I did eventually get the parcel my friend posted to me :-) All the best, Lindel patrick haynes wrote: >Can any one tell me if the strike at the Dublin mail office has ended or is mail entering Ireland from overseas still being held up. > Patrick Haynes > > >==== DONEGALEIRE Mailing List ==== >To browse through the archives of the list go to >http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl >Visit my homepage at http://freepages.genealogy.com/~donegaleire > >============================== >Gain access to over two billion names including the new Immigration >Collection with an Ancestry.com free trial. 2. Hello Inishowen Travelers I am researching the DOHERTY family that starts for me in TULLYDISH, BUNCRANA with JAMES DOHERTY and chidden WILLIAM and BRIDGET. William has many descendants in the Buncrana area. Bridget married JOHN MCLAUGHLIN probably from LETTER, FAHAN around 1860. They had children JOHN, CHARLES (1867), PATRICK (1869),WILLIAM, JAMES, CATHERINE (1872), DANIEL (1876) MCLAUGHLIN. Their mother Bridget died in BALLYEDEROWEN in 1896 and her husband John died between 1901 and 1904 in the same area. JOHN married ANNIE MOONEY in Fahan and moved to Londonderry where descendants live today. DANIEL married GRACE VERONICA CURRAN and lived in TOOBAN, FAHAN where descendants live today. CHARLES went to GLASGOW and married MARY MCALEER where family may live today and spell the name MCLAUGHLAN. PATRICK was born in Carnashannagh moved to Glasgow and Wishaw, Scotland, (married ISABELLA COONEY) Nova Scotia, Windsor, Ontario and Michigan where descendants live today. WILLIAM, JAMES and CATHERINE lived in Fahan and Ballyederowen and have no descendants as far as I know. Chuck Loeher Grosse Pointe, Michigan USA

    1. CROSSAN/McDEVITT
    2. maggie and adrian
    3. Someone put these names on the list and I can't find their email, so will reply to the list. A Daniel CROSSAN and Anne McDEVITT have four childen on the IGI. John born 1870, Mary born 1872, Ellen (Helen) born 1875 and Bridget 1877. Does not give the place of birth - just Donegal. I couldn't find Daniel and Anne on any Census for 1901 and 1911 for Donegal. I did find an Ellen CROSSAN arriving in New York to relocate to Philadelphia in 1895. A Bridget went to the States in 1903 to stay with her sister Ellen in Philidelphia as did a Mary in 1906. I may be able to decipher the address where Ellen was living in the US for you. I can give you the names of the ships anyway. Cheers, MAGGIE

    2. Kylie Veale
    3. Fellow genealogists, Have you ever used the Internet to learn about genealogy methods and resources? Taken a genealogy course online? Read some 'how to' articles? Then I would like to hear from you. I am an Australian Ph.D. student who is currently writing a book chapter for an academic Virtual Learning Environment publication - my chapter is about using the Internet for genealogical education. I would therefore love to hear from you, fellow genealogists, about any Internet-based content you've used for genealogy education. This includes online courses (free or fee), how-to's, articles/columns, newsgroups, BBS, chat, mailing lists, forums, or even personal web pages that publish learning material - anything online that helps you in learning the craft of genealogy. Your comments on the following is of utmost interest: What are your favourite learning outlets on the Internet? How often do you use them? Can or did you find what you needed online? What are your learning successes? What could be better? What do you look for in genealogical learning on the Internet? If you would like to participate, your comments are extremely welcome. Please send your comments to me directly at research@veale.com.au before Saturday 1st May 2004. I thank you in advance for your participation in this academic research. Kylie Veale P.S. Names and email addresses will be protected and are therefore not included in the publication. Copies of the paper will be made available to interested participants on request, after the book has been published. ----------------------------------------------- Kylie J. The children where primarily born in Carndonagh. In later years one son went to Toronto, Canada, One to Scotland and 4 to Derry. If anyone has a connection would love to exchange information. 1. Re: [DONEGALEIRE] Re: Crosson and McDevitt
    2. Judith, If you're not sure of the county for a particular surname, it can be worth checking it out on the Irish Times website where they have some statistics based on the 1850's Griffiths Valuation by County. It does quite a good job of allowing for spelling variations. Take a look: http://www.ireland.com/ancestor/ Having had a brief peek, I think you were right first time: you're probably looking in Donegal, maybe in neighbouring Tyrone. And you should also look for CROSSAN and McCROSSAN. Next, check out Griffiths for the surnames Crosson, Crossan etc. Griffiths was recorded by townland. A good start would be websites by two of our list members. Lindel's genealogy resources is the most complete Donegal site on the web: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~donegal/ Bob's website has generously transcribed Griffiths records: (Bottom of page choose Research Data, then Ireland data, then Griffith Valuation Donegal). I just checked and Bob has a super collection of Crossan, Crossen etc. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hiflyte/ Hope that helps. 2. Jane Lyons
    3. For some reason Henry when I tried the link there was something wrong with it. The return message said something about a string missing.............or words akin to that. Anyway - it's an interesting list - you've posted the names and there's not much else left to look at on that page *but* if you go to the home page at: http://www.donegaltown.ie and then scroll down that page and keep watching the left hand side column - then, that's where you come to the Transportation list - plus more. An interesting site to say the least - I have a link on my Donegal page to the Donegal town page - but it's come on in leaps and bounds since I first looked at it - or, maybe I just never took a good look at all the site had to offer, so thanks for pointing this page on that site out. I've another reason to thank you - I had loaded a page to the history section of my site relating to Transportation in the 1650's - but I had forgotten to load the county pages I had it linked to!! It's olde English, but gives the reader some bit of understanding of the whole situation in law re vagabonds and idlers etc......few names mentioned other than the Captains of ships used to transport people and where they were sent to. So, in case anyone would like to know something about 'transportation' as well as this list of Donegal names then take a look at: http://www.from-ireland.net/history/allcounties/transportation.htm Jane ----- Original Message ----- From: "McFadden" <McFadden@ntlworld.com> To: <DONEGALEIRE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, April 18, 2004 4:02 PM Subject: [DONEGALEIRE] Transportation, Donegal to America 18C. > > I have just come across the following list at . . .
