    1. Consanguinity answer............
    2. Lindel
    3. Well! Thanks for the help I got - I was starting to get myself all confused - it looks like 3rd degree would be 2nd cousins, with a common gr grandparent - 4th degree would mean the couple has a gr gr grandparent in common. One of the marriages I have has 3rd and 4th degree consanguinity between the couple, which looks to mean they were 2nd cousins once removed. Its going to be fun sorting this lot out but at least I have a better idea of it now. Thanks to everyone who emailed! All the best, Lindel

    3. Hello Lindel, I'm not going to try and get my head around what I am about to relate, especially since it is early Sunday morning here in Donegal. Webster's Dictionary has the following explanations for 'Consanguine' and 'Consanguinty': Consanguine: ( F. Consanguin, fr. L. Consanguineus, fr. com + sanguineus, of blood - more at SANGUINE) CONSANGUINEOUS; specif: based on an extended group of blood relations esp. of unlinear descent and constituting the functional famlial unit in a society. Consanguinty: 1. the quality or state of being related by blood or descended from a common ancestor: BLOOD RELATIONSHIP - distinguished from 'affinity' and commonly expressed in degrees of consanguinity (according to one scheme a person has consanguinity of the second degree with his grandfather, grandson, uncle, cousin-german, and nephew or corresponding female relations) 2. genetic relationship; specif: the spatial, chronological, and compositional relationship existing between the various rocks in a single petrographic province 3 : a close relation or connection : AFFINITY (the consanguinity of all religions). There is also a 'family tree' type of diagram that I can not easily reproduce here but may be able to 'paint' and send to anyone who is really, really interested. Lindel, I know the nights are getting long in that upside-down part of the globe but the sun is shining here in Donegal so please, could you make the questions easier for a few months. 3. Help! I just can't get my head around this - I have some marriages where the bride and groom have some degree of consanguinity - now, I know this means that they have some blood relationship, but does anyone know exactly what relationship they would have if there was a 3rd degree consanguinity? And 4th degree consanguinity? That must mean cousins, but is it first, second? If I know what these degrees are, then I can at least try to figure out where their lines meet. I've had a good look around the internet, but haven't found anything that can be more specific - or is clear enough for me to understand :-) Thanks! Lindel

Well, I am getting somewhere at least! I've some copies of early Conwal and Leck and Glenswilly marriages, plus others and had only recently noticed the funny latin notes in one column with this word 'consanguinity' ................. definately looking at the canon law consanguinity. I got some good responses to my query about it and then this morning (for me anyway!) Pat mentioned Family Tree Maker - duhhhh - I've been using that prog for about 10 years and hadn't noticed that it could list a report with the canon and civil kinship as well! I listed my kinship report and just in case this might help someone, here's what it comes up with for some relationships - Canon 1st cousin - 2 1st cousin once removed - 3 1st cousin twice removed - 4 2nd cousin - 3 2nd cousin once removed - 4 3rd cousin - 4 Aunt/uncle - 2 Grandfather - 2 Great grandaunt - 4 Grandaunt/uncle - 3 Great grandfather - 3 Still going back to study the Catholic encyclopaedia online though!!! Thanks to everyone who responded - again :-) Lindel (where its a sunny Sunday morning & Mothers Day !) ==== DONEGALEIRE Mailing List ==== Visit my Donegal Homepage at: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~donegaleire/ ============================== Gain access to over two billion names including the new Immigration Collection with an Ancestry.com free trial. 3. Hi Lindel I started by using GOOGLE and put in "Consanguinity",then at the bottom of the page where it says "Search within results" I put in "3rd Degree" This brought up quite a lot of hits which will probably answer your question. Much better this way than me trying to explain it. Anyway 1st cousins are 2nd degree, and 2nd cousins are 3rd degree. 1. genetic testing and markers for where your genes have been
    2. several years ago i went to neghsand some people from byu were there and they had <A HREF="http://smgf.org:8081/pubgen/site15.jsp">this project</A> . i participated what it wass destined to do was to determine where your ancsestors traveled. i had to give then four generations on all sides . this was so they could know who, where they were.they explained it and said eventually if your a geneaologist and doing the name DENNING . You could go to them and submit dna and find out that my genes stayed in chelsea ma for while ,previos stays of length were in ardagh, longford, lothiam scotland, dover england, and serbia. This facinated me . but the topper was that they showed us a map of the world and said sure england grmany france ,america even south america had tons of dots indicating markers. One place had none. Africa was a place no one had been able to donate dna and four generations of family tree info. So they would need to travel there and convince people to donate dna. with alot of others from maybe england and other place that would have the geneaological info. One day this would allow blacks in america to use their dna to locate the nation country tribe and village their predecessors lived. Imagine the travel agencies booking passage to these villages . we get excited at finding grandmas aunt, lol. this is whats capable thru dna.and its alread done at http://smgf.org:8081/pubgen/site15.jsp Chelsea,Ma.-Woburn,Ma.-denning-dennen-danin-dinan-dinihey-denningston-dinning- carlon-carroll-dever-cogan-malone-heslin-piscopo-mazzola-martini-farrell-mchug h-farley-grimes-lynch-doherty-SanDanto,Ita-Adargh,longford-Revere,Ma-Wintrop,M a.-sprague- and ever growing list Jim Denning

The parish of Fahan Lower is Buncrana and its environs. I have a paper copy of the Fahan Lower valuation, just let me know what names you're after, and what townland(s) they're in, and I'll let you know what the rest of the record says. Just in case you don't know what else is included on the Valuation, it has no information that can link one generation to another in any concrete manner. Here is what it has: Townlands and Occupiers (What you'll find in the Index) Immediate Lessors (Who is leasing or sub-leasing the land to the occupier, or if it is "In Fee" - i.e. they own it) Description of Tenement (a vague description of the land e.g. house, office(s) and land) Area (in A.R.P. - there's lots of info on this type of measurement online) Rateable Annual Valuation (divided between land and buildings) Total Annual Valuation of Rateable Property. 3. Betty, Take a good look at Lindels site, she has data on Fahan http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~donegal/ I am assumming that you found the names on the GV list at my site, the only info I have on GV names are in the data base. For additional GV data you will have to get it from the source, it is an Irish Government site and you will have to pay. http://www.valoff.ie/ Before you go to the Valoff visit Jane Lynons site, she has an explanation of the pros and cons for looking up GV data. http://www.from-ireland.net/index.htm Jane is does research, contact her by email via her site. I looked at the Births on BIVRI #2 disk and there are NO McManemy's listed for Donegal, but this disk of data is very limited. Have posted this reply to the Donegaleire List, someone may be able to help you with the McMANEMY surname.
