Hi Pat, I just took my first trip to Ireland this past April. Driving on the left can be pretty intimidating in the city (like Dublin), but once you're on the country roads, it's very easy to fall into the pattern. The other trick is the roundabouts at every intersection. Sometimes you can't see the signpost until you've gone around twice! But all in all, it's not that bad. I'm used to driving the freeways in Los Angeles, so Ireland's main highways were a breeze. They are usually two lanes each way. Just give yourself plenty of time traveling between points. On the map the distance may be short, but the condition of the road, or the twistiness of it can really add time to your drive. Good luck, Louise in California
Hi everyone! I am actually making my first visit to Ireland in October and half of the visit will be a coach tour in the south but the other 6 days I have signed up to do a self drive and am now having second thoughts. I want to get from Dublin to the Glenties area of Donegal and was wondering if you could hire just a driver for the 165 mile trip up and back? I want to still have access to the car for the little driving we would do in Donegal for research purposes and for our stays at the B&B's there but I don't need a driver there. It is too late now for us to fly into Donegal airport for Hertz does not have an office there. To hire a chauffeur from travel co. now is a minimum $1200 so that is out. Driving on the opposite side of the road is suddenly has me breaking out in hives. I know some of you have done your research in Ireland and have driven around and Pete from Mass. has been so helpful to me would hire him if I could .LOL thanks for any info Pat
If you belong to the Donegal-L List, you'll be reading this twice, I submitted a similar Post to that List hoping to reach interested researchers in the Donegal area. Have long been researching the name MURRAY in Campsie, Stirlingshire, Scotland. The line I'm interested in came from Donegal about 1846 according to the death record of Rachael MORROW whose family had become MURRAYs after the move to Campsie. It was noted on her 1855 death Registration that she was born Killymard, Ireland and was 49 years old when she died. All her children were named which was a boon to my research on this family. I've recently downloaded a Death Registration for a MURRAY who died in Campsie in 1923. Listed his birthplace in the 1901 Census as Donegal. His name was David MURRAY, head, married, age 56, a Chemical Works Labourer born Donegal, Ireland. Catherine [DEVLIN] was his wife, age -5 [line obscures first digit] also born Donegal, Ireland. I'd hoped his parents would be Edward MORROW and Rachel MORROW [married name same as maiden name] but David's parents were David MURRAY and Helen McCORMACK who were both already deceased. He was the widower of Catherine DEVLIN [meaning she pre-deceased him], he died April 14, 1923 at 1 Well Lane, Lennoxtown, Campsie, Stirlingshire aged 79y of Senile Decay. Informant was Wm HANNIGAN, Son-in-law. The 1901 Census had his family as Sarah, age -5 [line obscures first digit] born Lennnoxtown, Stirlingshire. David, son, 20 born same, Michael DEVLIN, 49, Brother in law born Stirlingshire and Denis McCAHILL, 8, Grandson born Stirlingshire, Lennoxtown. Sorry its not the line I wanted, but this man belongs to someone with roots in Donegal... Meg Greenwood / Oklahoma USA

Bob, Thank you for sending the gedcom files. It appears the information they put on the cd's about my family is from emails they found that I once posted on the internet, not from actual research they did. The email address they list for me is so old I no longer remember when I used it. Kathy

Hi all These discs refer to Pedigree Resource files. They are pedigrees contributed by members and non members. The cds are often found as part of local family history centers materials for use by anyone. The disc and pin numbers refer to the specific disc to look in. Check with your local FHC to see if they carry them. Happy hunting Delia

Some things are submitted by church members, and those, unless there are real sources listed, can be suspect as having been copied from other people's records. I have seen some wide discrepancies and some actual mistakes on what's been posted by others about my own family. I sometimes use this information, if it seems to have been taken from actual records, but otherwise I make notes of it without entering it into my genealogical program. Then, if I find something that corroborates the first information, I can go back to it and add it. The Irish information is particularly susceptible to use without real records ever being seen......I have to accept "likelihoods" with my own Irish ancestors, as the paper proof isn't available to me, and may not even exist. I'd suggest doing as I have, making note of what is on the site, and then trying to get further data to back it up. If you can contact the submitter, you may find what sources he used, such as filmed records you can see at the FHC library.......many Mormon churches have such libraries, and they can obtain films they don't have on hand. Good luck with your search!
I hope it's okay to ask this question here but I don't know of another, better place to ask. I just wasted some spare time searching the LDS site familysearch.org. To my surprise they have listed info about my Irish great grandparents. The site says the info was submitted by and LDS member and that there's more information available on Disc #16 Pin #'s 140499, 140500 and 140502. Can anyone tell me what this is all about? Would it be possible for someone to look this information up for me? I managed to find the name of the submitter but I'm positive she's not a member of my family. Are LDS researchers now putting the info they find in official records on cd's and selling them? Thanks! Kathy

I'm not sure it would be within list rules to recommend or criticize a particular commercial service in this forum, but DNA is a growing aspect of genealogy that everyone should be aware of, and I strongly recommend it as a news tool we can add to those that have already been available for tracing our family history.. There are lists devoted to DNA testing which discuss the pros and cons of which markers are being tested by which services, how useful various markers are, and what support the services provide to users, especially organized family projects. As coordinator for two DNA surname projects, I would be happy to answer privately (off-list) any specific questions that members of this list might have, after familiarizing themselves with the subject through the material already available on the web. My thanks to Laurie Thompson for asking about Convoy Presbyterian Church records, and to Rachel for her reply. My great-grandparents and their children, including my grandmother Martha Wasson b. 1888, attended Convoy Presbyterian and I had written to this church several years ago (twice, actually) searching for information on their records. As I've never received a reply, I'm very happy to learn these records are available at PRONI (and elsewhere) because my husband and I will be in Belfast soon, prior to arriving in the Letterkenny and Glenmaquin to meet Wasson relatives and explore the area where my grandmother grew up. So Rachel, your answer helped more than one person. That's the kind of information that makes lists like this so useful! Thanks again, both of you. Maureen Parker San Antonio, Texas

Hi Elaine! Catherine Connaghan, dau of John Connaghan and Grace Doherty, was born 10 Mar 1871 - she married Patrick Callaghan 13 May 1891. Patrick and Catherine had a son in Carrowtrasna in 1893 (Catherine's townland) and another in Carrickyscanlan, Conwal parish, in 1913 (Patrick's townland??) ALOT more info is on my Gartan pages at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~donegal/gartan/cencarrowt.htm including census entries, family details and the contact name and email address of Bernadette, who is also a descendant of John and Grace. For M. Hendrix: I can't help you with your WILLYs in Donegal, but I do quite a few WILLIEs from ca 1614 in Wales or possibly Yorkshire, England. They seem all to have wound up in CT., mostly New Haven. I've been told that all WILLIE/WILLY/WILLIS families are probably related. Barbara
