    1. Re: [DONEGALEIRE] [IRL-CO-DONEGAL] Mevagh Church Graveyard - CtyDonegal
    2. But which country didn't have vast swathes of poverty stricken working class folks in the 19th century? Have you ever read "How Green Was My Valley" by Richard Llewellyn, about the crushing poverty in Welsh mining communities, or "The Scots Quair" by Lewis Grassic Gibbon about poverty stricken Scottish crofters, or "The Ragged Trousered Phimanthropist" by Robert Tressell about poverty stricken English painters in Hastings? I think we are in danger of losing sight of the original question here. There IS no shortage of old tombstones in Donegal. No more so than anywhere else in these islands. Just look in the right places - mainly Church of Ireland churches, which are older than Presbyterian or Catholic churches. There are plenty of stones left by the Victorian middle classes in Donegal, just as in England or Scotland or Wales, but ordinary working class folk, no matter which country they lived in, rarely left stones until the 20th century. For a start, they were illiterate - have you never looked at 19th century marriage records and seen all those big Xes? Not much point in marking a stone when you couldn't read it! And secondly, yes, agricultural labourers, which is what they mostly were - mine certainly were - they were dirt poor - just as they were everywhere else in the world in the 19th century. And they most certainly did not sink into any bogs. Donegal has some of the finest agricultural land in Ireland in the Laggan Valley. As for the EU, most Irish people will be aware that in the controversial referendum held only four weeks ago, the people of Ireland brought the EU juggernaut to a juddering halt by voting NO to a new constitution for the EU. Irish people believed it would have damaged Ireland's neutrality and brought about unwanted social changes and too much immigration, but they also voted No because they had been told by the French and the Germans that they, the Irish, should be thankful for all the benefits that the EU brought us, and vote YES. We are a cussed folk, I'm afraid! And proud too. The French and the Germans now wish to press on without Ireland, and, I am sure you will be struck by the irony here, it is likely to be the British who will ride to Ireland's rescue and veto such a move. So, the EU is a very touchy subject here at the moment. Best not mentioned. Especially as it is off topic! I've been working with old parish records on film, and some of them are very difficult to read, and I've looked at photos of old gravestones which were almost impossible to decipher, even with good lighting on them. Dave Mitchell, Cape Town, South Africa PS. I have no (known) connection with the author. If I am offending list etiquette by drawing attention to a commercial product that is expected sometime in the future, I apologise. My motive is simply to encourage good disclosure and recognition for the volunteerism and courage of the brave young men who served -- this is their story! They have earned the right to call for our assistance and tribute. ......................................................................................................................................... For your information .... from yesterday's "Londonderry Sentinel" -- see the article below, or otherwise please go to website : http://www.londonderrysentinel.co.uk/news/Historian-seeking-help-on-soldier.4240513.jp This is a call for items and photos on Derrymen who served in the 10th Inniskillings in WWI (1914 - 1918), and especially a plea to identify a photo -- possibly of Reuben Orr, of Bond Street. ......................................................................................................................................... Londonderry Sentinel Published Date: 02 July 2008 By Freelance A LONDONDERRY author bringing out a new edition of his book charting the fortunes of local soldiers fighting in the first world war is looking for Sentinel readers' help in identifying the youngest member of the regiment. Gardiner Mitchell from Eglinton is bringing out a new edition of his book Three Cheers for the Derrys! in the autumn and anyone with information and photos of the 10th Royal Iniskilling Fusiliers has just four weeks to submit them for possible inclusion in the book. Three Cheers was first published in 1991 and Gardiner has unearthed a wealth of new information to boost the volume's size by a third for the definitive 2008 edition. Copies of the original, which has become scarce, have been seen going for up to £130 on auction site eBay. Gardiner is particularly interested to hear from anyone who can help him ascertain whether the soldier pictured beside this article is Reuben Orr, a young man who died at the age of 17 on 1st July 1916. Reuben was the youngest soldier in the regiment and was too young to join up when he left these shores to fight for the Empire against Germany. He came from Bond Street, his mother was widowed and he had no brothers or sisters. Is the young man in the photo Reuben? Keen photographer Gardiner has digitally enhanced the many old photos included in the first edition and many new photos obtained in the intervening years will be seen for the first time. "The photos in the new book are digitally enhanced so they look better than ever," he says. "The book itself will remain the same, but there is loads of new information and new photos. The new edition will be a third bigger than the last. "It is the last book ever to be written with first hand accounts from veterans of the great war. We know these images and information are out there. "This is the last chance for people to submit new material, which must be first-hand, which may be included in the new book." Gardiner hopes the new edition will be published in time for this year's remembrance day. Those with photos or material they think may be of interest can contact Yes publications on 10-12 Bishop Street, call 02871261941 or email [email protected] The full article contains 417 words and appears in Londonderry Sentinel newspaper. My g-grandmother was Margery Doherty, and g-grandfather's John McGonigle's sister Mary married a Dougherty in Donegal, while sister Eleanor (who had emigrated in 1818 with two of their brothers) married a William Dougherty in Adams Co., Pennsylvania. I've no idea whether these three Doherty/Dougherty folks were related! If they were, that would really tangle the branches of the family tree. Margo **************Gas prices getting you down? 3. A few years back (2000), One of the listers discussed Doe Cemetery, and by happenstance pointed to an obituary of my Mother's cousin (who I never met). I was going to be going through Creeslough in mid-July, and was wondering if anyone on the list might know exactly where this cemetery is. I was at Doe Castle before, in 1991, so if anyone knows how I'd get to this cemetery from the Castle, that would be helpful. Of course - if anyone happens to have come across or need any genealogy information related to the family - that is appreciated too (and I'm glad to help out). ****** "Mike Sweeney wrote: > Hi Carol, > Yes, I believe Doe is the name of the Catholic cemetery for Saint > Michael's in Creeslough. > > Here is a recent obit from the highlandradio.com site: > > Mick Mc Laughlin. > Fairview, Dublin and formerly of Magheroarty, Cresslough, Co. 1. [DONEGALEIRE] O'Doherty v Doherty
    2. At the risk of interrupting the erudite discussions on chalking gravestones, I wonder can anyone help me with the Griffiths Valuation and the O'Dohertys. I have looked at both Bob's site and the Failte Romhat site and I can see that the GV index shows there were only three "O" Dohertys in the whole of Donegal (ignoring variations in spelling the Doherty bit) but over 100 Dohertys (without the "O") in Fahan Lower alone. I assumed this is due to officialdom's over zealous anglicisation of the name. And yet, while looking for O'Dohertys, I noticed that there were hundreds of O'Donnells - with an "O". Less evidence of anglicisation there. Anyone any other suggestions just in case I were ever to be asked why the O'Dohertys are only found under Doherty?
