    1. [DONEGALEIRE] Town of Cavan in Donegal
    2. Amine Chaar
    3. I just noticed on a map of Donegal the town of Cavan in Killaghtee Parish. My relative Edward (John) SCANLON married Catherine CASSIDY of whom I believe were both from Ardara, Killybegs Lower (information from Griffiths) . From an obituary for Edward SCANLON)Virden, Macoupin County, Illinois) it listed he was from Cavan. I always figured this was Cavan County but I've never been able to find SCANLON'S there. After much research I did find SCANLON"S & CASSIDY families living in the same area in Donegal. Is it possible the Cavan from the obituary is in Donegal? Does anyone have any information regarding Cavan in County Donegal? My Edward SCANLON b. 1846 in Ireland married Maryann QUIN Glasgow 1869. Arrived NY 1873 lived in Scranton, PA (worked as a coal miner) until 1878. From 1880 to 1917 was in Illinois. Thanks, Gwen

    3. Hello Marie, The person that you are looking for was probably a McCann (Mac Cana) in Ireland. The name is not that common in Donegal and I think that they would be more numerous in Derry, and perhaps around the border area. Alas, you will need a lot of luck to take even an educated guess as to where he was from as there are few records from that period. One possibility, remote as it may be, is to search for other people of the same name. I do not know where the name Barnabas comes from but it may be Latin for something like Barney (Brian). People were named after relatives in those days so a Barney McCann, for example, in the much latter Tithe List or Griffiths Valuation could give you a clue. It is perpetuated in the placename Ballymacataggart [see Fermanagh]. MacATEER Mac an tSaoir (saor, craftsman). An Ulster name for which the Scottish MacINTYRE, of similar derivation, is widely substituted. Ballymacateer is a place bame in Co. Armagh, which is its homeland. Mac an tSaoir is sometimes Anglicized Wright in Fermanagh. For further information see MacLysaght's book 'More Irish Families' which I don't have. [email protected] is a good list for that county. Pacific Daylight Time, [email protected] writes: The Great Famine also known as the Irish Potato Famine and the Great Hunger started in 1845 and lasted - depending on the region - until 1849 or even 1852. I understand there were earlier famines, perhaps not quite so widespread, but I must wonder if that would have caused my g-granduncles to emigrate to Adams Co., PA in 1818, according to Uncle Daniel's naturalization papers. G-Grandfather John McGonigle didn't follow them until 1831, with wife and one child. Then again, perhaps the smallish plots of land they farmed weren't able to support so many family members, some of whom remained in Donegal. They were tenants of H. G. Murray Stewart in Drumgornan, according to Griffith's 1857 valuation, he being the owner of a huge amount of land (the return of land owners for 1876 gives his home as Gullygate House, Scotland.) He still owned it in the 1890s, but later electoral rolls show the land as owned by the previous tenants or their descendants. I've not been able to locate any of these emigrants on ships lists of any sort, but I assume they entered through Philadelphia or perhaps Baltimore, as did another ancestor. Maybe these manifests were just lost somewhere, or even never filled out and filed properly. Margo in SoCal **************Get fantasy football with free live scoring. 2. Liam & Bob, Thank you, I knew it had to do with the famine that was unquestionable -- I'm trying to figure out what other factors entered into this picture. Now that it has been narrowed down to the Parish of Kilmcrenan -- was land confiscated in this area in 1845-46? Does any one else have family that come from the Parish of Kilmcrenan to the USA about this time period 1845-46??? Any family stories that have been handed down from before 1845-46? Was Thomas' passage paid by someone else, who sent a group over from the Parish of Kilmcrenan? Was this kind of thing being done in 1845-46, by a priest, a landlord, etc., in the Parish of Kilmcrenan? Why did Thomas take the expensive route from Co. Donegal to Liverpool to NYC -- why didn't he take the cheaper route from Co. Donegal to Derry to Canada? Did a group from the Parish of Kilmcrenan come & settle in the same areas in the USA in 1845-46? Thomas settle in Reading, Berks Co., PA! I have the "Report on the Irish Naturalized in Delaware Co., PA," -- Co. Donegal is at the top of the list with 272 males naturalized before 1860. They mainly came from Co. Donegal to Derry to NYC or to Philadelphia! Interesting! In 1845-46 was one route of departure favored over another? Weren't they all hungry! (rhetorical) Helen M. 1. [DONEGALEIRE] A Jolly Jack Tar
    2. Liam Martin
    3. My father (William John MARTIN b 03 May 1900 d 30 Oct 1974) once remarked to my sister that went to sea for a while but gave it up when his ship sank and the crew had to take to the boats. We all took this with a pinch of salt but I decided to put the story to the test There's a useful new site at http://www.irishmariners.ie which contains a database of Irish merchant mariners. The database contains details of (currently) 15000 Irish-born merchant mariners active in 1918-1921, and is based on the CR10 records held at Southampton Archives Service. The database is searchable (and free to use) and will eventually include approx 25000 names. Data available for the seamen includes data and place of birth, voyages undertaken, certificates attained and, in some cases, home and next of kin. Many of the original records include photographs of the seamen, a sample of which are on the site. Putting Dad's name into the search engine produced a reference to this record - (The date and city of birth are identical). Martin, William John (sailor) Identity No.445500. Born: 1900-05-03, Londonderry, (Co:Londonderry) Disch A No: 1022140 Photo: f5 hair Notes: Renewal I have now ordered a copy of the old sailor's CR10 card from Southampton Archives Services Southampton Archives Services Civic Centre Southampton SO14 7LY Tel. (023) 8083 2251 Email: [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] Website: www.southampton.gov.uk/leisure/history/archives/ They can provide copies of the cards in various formats. The original CR10 cards are 5 inches by 3 inches in size, which is a bit small to do justice to many of the photographs. I asked for a 50% enlargement of the original on a Laser A4 photocopy. This will make the most of the photo and the card will be in colour. Current cost (July 2008) is £1.25 for each side which makes the overall cost of the card £2.50 plus postage and search fee of £2.00. (if you quote the full name and ID Number ) Send a cheque. We should find out what ships this Jolly Jack Tar was on and if any of them sank - Watch this space! Liam http://postmanbill2.tribalpages.com/ "A bird in the bush is worth two in the cat"
