Another reason to upgrade to a Mac ; ) Time Machine backs up your entire hard drive regularly, saves even deleted items and is sooo easy to use! I NEVER lose ANYTHING. Plus since Word & Excel were originally designed for the Mac, they run better on it, too. Dear Dave Re: your comment "I work on a laptop for home and self-employed work -- plus, being in South Africa, I'm at risk to burglary and all my computer equipment being ransacked, no matter where I hide it" I was coming into my house in England about 6 months ago when I met two Hoodies walking out with my laptop (It was never recovered - they were faster than I was) . So you don't need to be in SA to lose it all. I had been using the laptop as a backup. Fortunately the Desktop computer survived along with my data. So now, irrespective of hard drive failure, theft or fire, the data (which is worth more than $4.95 a month) is on a server in the US of A, ready to be recovered at a convenient time. My email is on it too, addresses, inbox and sent items. Let me know what your IT son thinks of the Remote Backup idea. Royal Irish Constabulary The Irish Constabulary was established in 1822, and became the Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC) in 1867. Both were armed, paramilitary forces whose members were stationed around Ireland and were responsible for, among other things, gathering intelligence, enforcing civil law and acting as census enumerators. Approximately 85,000 men served between 1816 and the creation of the Irish Free State in 1922. Every man who joined, or attempted to join, the RIC has a service record. These are housed in the Public Record Office in Kew, England and at the National Archives in Dublin and the PRONI in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Men are listed by year of appointment to the force. RIC recruits served in a county other than their home county and had to serve 7 years before marriage. They then transferred to another county. Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Family History Centres have the records available on films #852,088 to #853,097 and #856,057 to #856,069. The index is on films #852,096 - #852,097. The Irish Times at URL http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/ireland/2008/0818/1218868020689.html reports (August 19, 2008) that the records of more than 80,000 of these officers are been made available online on the subscription service www.Ancestry.co.uk. The registers normally give: ? full name; ? age; ? height; ? religious affiliation; ? native county; ? trade or calling; ? marital status; ? native county of wife; ? date of appointment; ? counties in which the man served; ? length of service; and ? date of retirement and/or death. The name of a wife is not given, nor any information about parents. I think Bess could well be Isabella and I agree with Margaret that Bess/Bessie are pet forms for Elizabeth. Also my grandmothers sister Elizabeth was always known as Bella. Just a thought LYALL might also be LYLE and ALLAN ALLEN, if you are doing an internet search or anything. Bernie. However, would a Bess be an Isabella ? I'd think not. Maybe the 4 girls were grand-daughters ? Its confusing.

Hi Meg, Bess is a nickname for Elizabeth. And Elizabeth and Isabella are used interchangeably in Ireland (or at least in the northern counties); I've also seen Arabella used for Isabella, just in case you come across that variant in another record. So, yes, an Irish Bess could easily be an Isabella in some records. Hope that helps. Claire K [email protected] Plan now! Have received the details for a CRAWFORD family I've been examining. They are likely to be a Donegal family, I find them living in Campsie, Stirlingshire in 1841right next to known direct ancestors originally from Drumhome, they wed in 1855 in Scotland, the Donegal link was on the marriage registration. I need to know more about James CRAWFORD and Isabella LYALL to find out if they were indeed from Donegal and perhaps linked to Elizabeth CRAWFORD a direct ancestor of mine. So I'm starting here and seeing what guidance someone can give me. Sorry its a lot of the female lines, the surnames keep changing and its hard to keep up with them. George ALLAN married Margaret MORROW in 1855, Campsie [continues as MURRAY]. His parents were Joseph ALLAN and Elizabeth CRAWFORD. The target family I've been scrutinizing in the 1841 census is headed by a Bess CRAWFORD age 60 born Ireland. Bess lives in Campsie next door to Margaret's parents [known to be from Donegal] could she be one of the CRAWFORDs born Drumhome and linked to Elizabeth ? Since there were 4 young girls at that address with her [Jane 26, Isabella 18, Mary 16 & Jemima 14], I'd thought they were daughters so I had a researcher follow one of them, Jemima CRAWFORD. She wed William TURNER and was found to have died in 1896 aged 66y in a poorhouse in Old Monkland, Glasgow. Her parents were noted as James CRAWFORD and Isabella CRAWFORD ms LYALL. The IGI has an entry for Jemima's marriage to Wm TURNER, her father's name was given as James CRAWFORD then, and likewise at her death. That's helpful, at least its consistent. However, would a Bess be an Isabella ? I'd think not. Maybe the 4 girls were grand-daughters ? Its confusing. Asking for background on both James CRAWFORD and Isabella LYALL. Finding he's linked to Elizabeth CRAWFORD would be sweet....but maybe not provable. Advice requested.....Meg Greenwood / Oklahoma USA ========================
