Hello Michelle Depending how much you want to see of Ireland ............. you could fly into Dublin and travel up by car to Donegal which will take somewhere in the region of 4 hours. If you wish to hire a car you will need to pre-arrange this prior to your trip for either Airport. If you fly into Belfast International Airport which is near Antrim it will take you approx 2 and half hours - max 3 hours. Yes there is a car seat requirement in Ireland. You must have young children strapped in at all times. For Prices of where to stay you should approach the Irish Tourist Board who have a directory of B & B's and Hotels for those who want to visit Donegal. Weather for the time of year you specify, will be cold and if you are very lucky, DRY. At worst you will have fog, rain , snow and anything else the elements wish to throw at you . By the end of October Summer time officially ends and the clocks go back one hour. By Dec 21st which is the shortest day light will be fading fast by 4:30 pm. Christmas can be dry and cold. We can have ice / frost. After that temperatures usually take a nozedive and will ssink below zero C. Once we get thru January we can hope for a little better weather. A few years ago, I had friends visit in February - told them to do cold and wet. Instead for the few days they were here, the sun shone. Michelle, Traveled to Ireland in June. Found alot of the answers you are looking for in planning on a website www.dochara.com . If you are in the United States, the flights you will take to Dublin, Shannon or Belfast will depend on which airline you are using and which airport is your point of departure. Belfast is a more convenient drive to Donegal but not all airlines go to Belfast direct. At the time of year you are considering, it is off season and airline prices are a bit cheaper. Since cost seems to be a factor, be prepared for everything in Ireland to be MUCH more expensive than in the States - and I am not just talking about the rate of exchange for the dollar and Euro. Fellow listers, There are many questions that I need some answers to while trying to plan a trip to Ireland. I am hoping that some kind souls on this site will take a few moments to help me. If I was to fly to Ireland and wanted to send time in County Donegal - what airport would I plan to land at? Since we will be travelling with small children - is there a car seat requirement in Ireland? what kind of transportation is available from the airport ??? We are not sure how long we plan to visit........depends on what all we want to see and how long the money will last........any lower priced places to stay ??? .................we would like to spend some time in the Fanad area. Also - what is the weather like in Nov/ Dec/ Jan/Feb there??? Part of why I am asking these questions is to try to somewhat plan the trip and figure out how much it will cost.........need to have enough to cover it all. Thanks, Michelle
Bob's visit to Ireland. Hello Bob, just thought I would write via the list to say it was great meeting you and your wife, it really was a wet night. I enjoyed our chat, you are a great advertisement for Ireland and maybe Bord Failte could give you some recognition as an ambassador for Ireland, you got out in time, apparently we are in a recession. I went down to Frosses on Friday around 3pm to pick up my grandson from school and while I was sitting in the carpark at the church you came up the road from the direction of the new graveyard, I hooted like mad but you didn't see me. I am so glad that your trip was so successful and you met some of the relatives from Scrawhill. Will be in touch. Bob - Enjoyed reading about your trip and look forward to seeing your pictures. Our last trip to Donegal was about 5 years ago and we look forward to returning some day. Thanks for sharing! Joanne

All, What a great trip we had to Ireland and our stay in Donegal. After staying in Dublin for four days we rented a car and drove to Donegal via Dundalk, Castleblayney, Enniskillen. Great highways, some are a bit narrow----. At least I had the M1 to allow a few miles to get tuned into driving and controls (wrong side) and from the other side of the road. It was fun once over the initial hour or so. Donegal in our opinion is the prettiest county- greenest which is understandable since it rained most days. I was amazed at what I saw in the county after listening to all those stories from my mother and other family members of what it WAS like. I found a super modern country, most homes that anyone in Canada would like to have. It is a place that I could move to at any time. We stayed at the Donegal Manor for seven days and it is a first class (new) B&B, my rating is 5/5 with one additional point for the hosts (6/5), they were of immense help and just get hospitality. The B&B is super modern with a great breakfast----the best B&B we stayed in for the 21 days in Ireland. I was lucky to meet a lady in the Frosses Cemetery, she asked me who I was looking for ---Griffith (in)/Brogan---she is a Griffith, she asked what townland they came from --Scrawhill--she is a Scrawhill Griffith----what luck. She phoned her father and set me over to his house, lots of talk, along with tea (we take it black no sugar) he asked if we did not have cows in Canada- great sense of humour. He then took us out to see the family farm area, the family was not there but had a look at the general area. He then took us to another family member but again no one home. To bad since this was my last day in Donegal. He then took us to the Killymard cemetery and showed us the plots. Unfortunately my old members were at the bottom of the apartment block and they were not included on the new head stones but alias we saw the sites. I now have a known member of my GM family, so the trip was worth while, we will keep in touch but again all of us are getting older so time flies bye. I will have to made another trip soon................... Also met a couple of other very interesting Mountcharles area people who helped us out. We drove all over Donegal, Slieve League, Dunfanaghy, Letterkenny, Killybegs, Inver, Ballybofey and many more. We also were able to get two rounds of golf in, Ballybofey GC and the Donegal GC. Really enjoyed playing our first round on a Links golf course. a real challenge and met some other golfers who helped us out in dealing with the course. We also had our narrow road encounter with a bus on the Malin road, had to pull the mirrors in back up a bit and tuck the car into the side and the bus passed with no more than 2 inches between us, my wife had a fit and all the bus people just looking down at us and betting we would hit --but I trust the bus driver who had encountered this many times in the past (I think). And after all these years of talking via the List I had the opportunity of meeting Margaret Graham, we had a great couple of hours together (hope she agrees). We discussed many aspects of family names and related matters. A big thank you to Margaret for taking the time to me us. I have many headstone pictures to post to my photo sites but this will take time to organize. From Donegal we drove south to Galway for four days, had a great visit in the area and also went to the Inismore Island, took the tour bus for 3 hours and saw most of the Island sights. Then south to Dingle/Kerry, the second nicest county in Ireland that we saw. We crossed by ferry on the Shannon River, down the coast road. Toured the Dingle area, across the Connor Pass--had an ice cream cone at the top from a Snack Wagon--he had a great business from the number of people eating ice cream and snacks. From Dingle we had two free days (no bookings) drove to Adare across to Wexford/Rossiare and stayed at Killiane Castle. The next day we drove to Portlaoise via Kilkenny and a tour of the castle. Sunday headed back to Dublin via Kildare, Naas. We spent our last night in the Dublin airport area and flew back home via Heathrow in England It was a wonderful trip and enjoyed it very much and will return in a year or so. The next time I will make better arrangements to meet those people that are important, we missed a number of List members and I regret this, it is always nice to meet those we deal with year in and year out but I messed up in my planning, maybe the golf should have been left off, but again I could not visit Ireland and not have played at least one round on a Links golf course. Did not go into our visits in the non Donegal areas in this post but we had a great time in each area. Long but needed to say what we did and thank all those Members who have contributed to our visit Thank you Bob Cdn =============================================

I have just discovered that an Irish ancestor was married to a daughter of William JOHNSTON and Frances LONE/LOVE. Witnesses to the marriage of George J. ELLIOTT to Emily JOHNSTON in 1916 in Toronto, Canada were Samuel HILLIARD and Emily IRVINE. What is most interesting is that Samuel Hilliard may have been a cousin of George Elliott's in Pettigo (or nearby). Samuel Hilliard and Emily Irvine later married in 1916, a few months after their friends' marriage. If anyone has any connetions, grave inscriptions, suggestions - I would really appreciate it. Thank you - Jane
Have finally found the right searchwords to get me to a website where I can learn the proper pronunciation[s] of the county names. A native speaker says the name of each county [and alternatives] then the main town name is pronounced. You can play it over if you wish. I find it takes awhile to download the .wav file and open it with Media Player, but I do get to hear the names. If your Windows Media player button [showing OK] is ghosted like mine, try clikking on it a few times, it wakes up. http://www.d.umn.edu/~pnuhring/Unit1.html Scroll down to the colorful map and clik a county I've been trying to find a list of pronunciations of the counties using phonetic spellings, but only found one and it had only 10 of the counties. One has Donegal said with an EE as the accented middle syllable. Like : dun eagle, however the native speaker says Dun nee GOL. You can view 5 replies with pronunciations offered for the requested counties. *http://tinyurl.com/42d2b9 *Please send me links to websites with phonetic guides to pronouncing the at least the county names. Hi Michael My 4xgreat grandmother was Margaret Gallagher ,I only know about her because son James Nevin died in Scotland and she was on his death registration.James was born in Derry about 1827,so she possibly came from there too. Anyway, you mentioned Nial of the Nine Hostages,..I had my Y DNA done and my results say that I have the same Y DNA as his descendants...it's a very tenuous connection and I don't place a lot of importance on it,but it's good to get the "Big Picture" of my ancestry. My McGONIGAL name ( Gaelic MacCONGHAIL ),is supposed to be a Milesian one, there again it's only historical but also gives the Big Picture. If you go here..http://www.familytreedna.com/matchnialltest.html...,it will explain about Nials influence on our ancestry. I'm researching McGonigal,Coyle,Owens,Nevin,Gallagher,McCrocken in Derry. Gorry,Keenaghan.Lowrie in Co.Westmeath. All the best Frank McGonigal Ont.Canada ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ----- Original Message ----- From: "Michael Gallagher" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]>; <[email protected]>; <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, September 28, 2008 3:52 PM Subject: [DONEGALEIRE] Gallagher & McCready families, immigrated to Summit Hill, Carbon County, PA, USA > I'm seeking my ancestors in Donegal- my paternal grandparents' last > names were Gallagher & McCready, both of which trace to Donegal. I'm seeking my ancestors in Donegal- my paternal grandparents' last names were Gallagher & McCready, both of which trace to Donegal. They themselves grew up in the 1920s & 1930s in Summit Hill, Carbon County, Pennsylvania, USA. However, their names trace to Counties Donegal (both), Antrim (McCready), & Ayrshire (Scotland) (McCready). My grandmother's McCready grandmother had McCready as her maiden name and was listed as being born in Ireland in the US Census. I'm wondering if anyone can fill me in on clan history in Donegal and hopefully connect my immigrant ancestors to their home townlands. Other Irish names in that branch include Patrick B. Kelly (born July 1869 in Pennsylvania- his father's name may have been John), Catherine Ward (wife of Bernard Gallagher), Sara(h) Ann Malloy (Maloy). How likely is it that the clan histories match my actual ancestors? Has anyone verified descent from Niall of the Nine Hostages? Anyone have access to the registers that may include these or their immigrant close relatives? Michael Gallagher
Hello, I'd like to repost my interest in my gr-gr-gr-grandparents, William and Mary Ann (?) HANNAH and Andrew and Isabella (?) RITCHIE. The problem is that I'm told the families were probably poor and probably moved back and forth between Scotland and Ireland. Because of that, I don't know where these people were born. And, I can only guess they were born somewhere around 1800. In 1828, the son, William HANNAH, was born in County Donegal, and I don't know in which town. In 1837, Eliza RITCHIE was born in County Donegal, and I don't know in which town. In Dec. 1854, they married in Barony Parish, Glasgow, Scotland. (There is more information in the archives of the Lists.) Thank you for your time. Betty (near Lowell, MA, USA) FYI: William and Eliza HANNAH had a daughter in Glasgow in 1856 and another daughter in Apr. 1857, and they migrated to the US in Aug. 1857. They eventually settled in Malden and Everett, MA. They seem to have lost their first daughter as a very young child; their second daughter lived to become my gr-grandmother. They then had at least 3 more children, including 2 sons.

Many thanks for the response to the Freen enquiry. My friend was delighted to see that their were others who were familiar with the surname. She says that, for the moment, she would carefully look through the correspondence sent, then try and see if she can go a little bit further on her own with this enquiry. She thamks you all for your input, I do too. My own interests would be Melvilles, but I do not think that many of that surname are to be found in Co Donegal, past or present? Many thanks again, Lisa.
