    3. Yes, usage of the detailed 1" to the mile O.S. maps is a great recommendation. And best to study these in detail for the areas you seek. Also, to know the location of your townlands. Follow the contours. You can all imagine the pleasure I felt -- as the light was fading (on a greyish day with little sun), I spotted a tiny opening in the fence named "Lisdiven Road" (hardly wide enough for a small car), and sure enough this was a backroad direct shortcut to where the townland of Lisdiven used to be. I came out right next to Drumenny where my grandfather lived. I knew then that I had indeed "come home", and belonged. Dave

I must say that getting lost wasn't scary for me but driving on the left side of the road, from the right side of the car, in a standard shift car, then coming to a round a bout and not knowing where to get off almost did me in. After a few 'oops' and a few arguments with my husband we finally got the gist. Luckily we had a pint waiting on us in Glendowan to smooth our ruffled feathers. :-) Jerry Lou

    2. I would fly into Shannon. You drive north to Donegal. What a wonderful drive and you will see some of the best sites ever. I do know you could hire a limo service to drive you around. The best prices are the B &B and may work better for children as they would have a real home feeling. I would first tell them you have children, though. There is a B&B book listing all the B&B's you could get from the tourist bureau. The weather is the winter is cold and rainy, but best prices. Check out this link for weather in Letterkenny. _http://weather.yahoo.com/Letterkenny-Ireland/EIXX0025/forecast.html_ (http://weather.yahoo.com/Letterkenny-Ireland/EIXX0025/forecast.html) Janice Thanks, Michelle When replying to a digest post, quote only the specific text to which you are replying, removing the rest of the digest from your reply. 3. Over 40 years of traveling in Ireland I have done it both ways but the GPS helps if you are going on the highway and trying to get somewhere. My daughter and I did not turn it on when leaving the airport in Dublin on the way north and we got so lost in Dublin. Then in the smaller towns asking directios is always fun. 1. [DONEGALEIRE] Use of GPS when driving in Ireland
    2. I have recently noted the following comments about the utility of including a GPS unit when renting a car in Ireland. >From Jackie: "I haven't seen any mention of this but the GPS system we rented along with the car rental was a Godsend. I don't know how we would have found our way around without it." >From Catherine: "I agree completely. A GPS system is a Godsend." And Jenny takes a different view: "If you have plenty of time I recommend going without the GPS. This gives you the opportunity to misread the map and get lost." And Joan says: "And not to mention the wonderful experience of asking directions in Ireland!! One meets the most interesting people." So, I guess it's time for me to take my often curmugeonly approach. My experience driving in Ireland started in 1991 and I had been making annual 3 to 4-week long trips until 2007. During that time, I drove about 25,000 miles throughout the Republic with rental cars, and got sort-of lost only twice. I credit this to always having good maps with me. Prior to about 1998, I was forced to use mostly the OS 1/2" maps, as they were the best practical roadmaps readily available. I might have had map problems back then but, basically, I avoided trying to find locations which were not marked on these maps (as originally printed, or from one of my many annotations). After 1996 or 7, the OS started issuing its Discovery maps at an increased rate, and I started using them exclusively.........even to the point of not visiting areas for which the appropriate Disc. map had not yet been published. Eventually, the map would be issued, and I would start going there. In about 1998, I got lost trying to get through Letterkenny. I could tell from the Disc. map just which streets/roads to take to go from west to east. When I entered the town, I was immediately faced with a collection of unanticipated one-way streets. I hate driving in any built-up areas, and so I frantically tried to wend my way through the chaos.....and became lost. The sky was heavily overcast, and there wasn't even the sun to guide me. So I relied on my trusty compass (which I often use when hiking with my camera stuff off-road) and kept trying to go eastward. I eventually broke-out of the traffic and quickly identified where I was on the Discovery map. My only other getting-lost experience was about 5 years ago, somewhere in the Midlands (I can mentally "see" the area, and my driving-around aimlessly - I have an eidetic memory, it seems - but haven't been able to locate it on my maps so far today). I don't know what happened. I am quite rigorous about my use of the maps. I pull to the side of the road every couple of miles (I rarely drive on the main N-roads - they're too busy) to check my position (I probably use the trip-indicator button on the car a hundred times a day). Anyway, I eventually found my way and continued on. I don't really understand Jenny's "misreading a map" problem, but that may be because I have a strong relationship with maps - at home and abroad - and double and triple check everything (retired-engineer talk). That's the extent of my non-GPS problems, so I can't imagine that a GPS unit would be an improvement. I have found that Joan's solution of "asking directions" - while it is an enjoyable experience - has not been particularly fruitful for me. After a few years, I generally stopped asking. But Joan's, and others', interests are surely different from mine. They - and most of you who read this rambling, boring letter - are looking for different things. You are looking for surnames, townlands, fields, derelict houses. I am looking for thousand-year old ecclesiastical sites, and even older Early Christian places in order to photograph and document them as well as I can. And, for such information, it's a rare man-on-the-street or even a B&B owner, who can be of much help to me. But, of the over-a-hundred B&B's I've stayed at in Ireland (I've never stayed in a hotel or guest house there), there are a select few who are knowledgeable about these things, and they are the ones that I revisit time after time (when I'm in that area). I'm sure the same principle applies to those who are travelling in Ireland and looking for B&B's whose owners are familiar with the histories of local families, etc. This is probably enough. If you find you need GPS, then it will probably be of some use (although I wonder what GPS/Google Maps would do about finding Newtown, Co. Wexford..... there are 15 Newtowns, plus another 6 with Big, Little, Upper, Lower extensions, in the county [gr]). But I'll stick with my Discovery maps and the other little "tricks" I have learned over the years of driving in Ireland. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me off-list. 3. Road maps - Discovery series are great for those places that are difficult to find, I had all five for Donegal and they sure cut down on the heated discussions between the two of us (my wife would not they say they were discussions) We also had the GPS along with the European/Ireland program loaded. It was great in most cases but funny following directions and the program runs out of roads---they did not program the small back roads that are Ireland. It would come up with some indication "going West" or "heading to Ballysomewhere" not helpful at times when you are indecisive and on the verge of another "discussion" We had to ask many a time as Boyd stated "Hey do you know------------------" That is why Ireland has so many Pubs, for us lost tourists to ask questions, rest, and a refreshment after those "discussions"................................ Make sure you have Good Maps with you- the Ordnance Survey maps also come in a series that are less detailed more for travellers in Ireland. Map Sites: http://www.discoverireland.com/ca-en/ireland-places-to-go/explore-by-map/?WT.srch=1 http://www.discoverireland.ie/where-to-go.aspx http://www.ireland-information.com/irelandmaps.htm http://www.wesleyjohnston.com/users/ireland/map_index.html And last pay attention to the road signs on those other highways and roads, they are small and you actually have to slow down to read most. Enjoy your trip Bob Cdn. =====================================

    2. P.J.
    3. Michelle, I will try to answer some of your questions about planning a trip to Ireland or specifically, to Donegal. There is a twice daily air service provided by Aer Arann between Dublin Airport and Donegal Airport which is located in the northwest of the county, near Gweedore and Dungloe. It is normally a fifty-seater plane and the rates are reasonable if you book well in advance. Journey time is about fifty minutes. There is a car hire service available at Donegal Airport, from about EUR16 per day for a small car, with the price rising with car size. John McGinley is one of a number of bus operators who provide a very good bus service between Dublin and Donegal. McGinley has links to practically all of the north and west of the county. Don't know the exact rates but they would charge a maximum of about EUR20 per person for a return ticket. The journey to Letterkenny is approximately four hours, with one fifteen minute break. Some or all of his services call to Dublin Airport. Patrick Gallagher runs a once daily bus service between Belfast and Donegal. There is a wide range of accommodation available, from hotels to family run Bed & Breakfast, with a budget to suit all pockets. Just looked up one local hotel, the Seaview in Bunbeg and they are charging US$125.48 per night on weekdays for a double room during the winter months. I don't know if that includes breakfast but presumably, it does. There are also some cheap hostels located around the county but I do not know if they would be suitable for small children. Seatbelts are required for both front and back seats but I am not certain if a child seat is a legal requirement since mine have gone well past that age - now they want the car instead. The car hire company should be in a position to meet your requirements and give advice. In Ireland, you may experience all of the seasons in one day, weather-wise. Generally, there is very little snow but frost can appear any time during the months that you mentioned. Expect anything from plenty of rain and stormy weather to calm days with pleasant sunshine, with the rain being a surer bet. For more information on most aspects of planning your trip, look up www.real-ireland.com Enjoy your trip, P.J.

    3. Hi Jane, Assuming Michelle is in the USA, I'm afraid Flyglobespan are no longer serving the US from Ireland - with one exception - Orlando. They are a Scottish-based airline and used to fly through Knock Airport in Mayo. They do still fly to Canada - Vancouver, Toronto and Calgary from Dublin or Belfast. Many budget airlines are fantastic, but I'm afraid however that from a personal point of view Globesapn would be the last airline I'd fly transatlantic with. In their first months of operating to the East Coast passengers experienced some horrendous delays - in one notorious case passengers were left stranded in JFK for more than 2 days.....have a look at comments in these Forums:- http://www.airlinequality.com/Forum/flygspan.htm http://www.airliners.net/aviation-forums/general_aviation/read.main/3486247/ In the interests of surviving these trouble times, Aer Lingus have in recent times moved somewhat towards the Budget airline model, but have always maintained in my opinion a good to excellent service, with fairly competitive pricing. This is just a personal opinion from someone who uses them fairly regularly on the Dublin - Boston route - I have no vested interest......but I would be very, very wary of Globespan. The main US Airlines operate regular services to/from Dublin - Continental, United, Delta, US Airways and American. Regards, and have a wonderful holiday when you finally make the trip Michelle, John > From: [email protected] > To: [email protected]; [email protected] > Date: Sat, 4 Oct 2008 11:44:34 -0400 > Subject: Re: [DONEGALEIRE] lfuture trip to Ireland with children > > > Last summer, my cousin (who lives in Donegal) flew from an airport in Mayo into Boston on a new airline - Globe Span. Found alot of the answers you are looking for in planning on a website www.dochara.com . If you are in the United States, the flights you will take to Dublin, Shannon or Belfast will depend on which airline you are using and which airport is your point of departure. Belfast is a more convenient drive to Donegal but not all airlines go to Belfast direct. At the time of year you are considering, it is off season and airline prices are a bit cheaper. Since cost seems to be a factor, be prepared for everything in Ireland to be MUCH more expensive than in the States - and I am not just talking about the rate of exchange for the dollar and Euro. I am hoping that some kind souls on this site will take a few moments to help me. If I was to fly to Ireland and wanted to send time in County Donegal - what airport would I plan to land at? Since we will be travelling with small children - is there a car seat requirement in Ireland? what kind of transportation is available from the airport ??? We are not sure how long we plan to visit........depends on what all we want to see and how long the money will last........any lower priced places to stay ??? .................we would like to spend some time in the Fanad area. Also - what is the weather like in Nov/ Dec/ Jan/Feb there??? Part of why I am asking these questions is to try to somewhat plan the trip and figure out how much it will cost.........need to have enough to cover it all.
