    3. Hi Bob...great pictures....took me back to Galway and Mayo as I love it there....Each time we go over we always stay in both places. We actually have friends who lived in Athenry near that castle and we have spent endless hours seeing them each trip. Looking forward to returning at least once more once the economy gets better. We love Westport and always stay in that town....nice place to wander up and down the streets... there is also a Molloy's pub and it is terrific. I see you managed to get over the Connor Pass....brave of you!! I went over it in 1960 on my first trip with my cousins...it scared me then... :-) We have been ourselves in the past 25 years a number of times, but I won't let hubby go that route...we always take the coastal roads....I am a chicken at heart when I get up too high.... the Healy Pass from Kenmare was another nail biter....it seems like I always had the seat that looked down the sides of the mountains...told hubby next time we reverse the trip and keep me on the inside of the road!! Thanks for taking me back for a short time.....love my short trips! 1. [DONEGALEIRE] William and Dora Reilly
    2. Claire K
    3. Can anyone claim a William and Dora Reilly (in Philadelphia with Irish and English connections)? Their son William was buried with my family in 1899 in Philadelphia (Pennsylvania, USA), but I have not found any connection between the families -- not even proximity or occupation, so I doubt these were neighbors or co-workers, though anything is possible. 1899 Philadelphia Death Cert (#22892) of William Reilly (Wm B. Riley on the cert.) says: white, male, 4 weeks old, died April 3rd 1899 of convulsions, Thomas Dugan, Coroner, per Wolf born Phila., father William K. Riley, mother Dora Riley 33rd Ward, 818 Willard St. buried April 5th 1899, New Cathedral (Roman Catholic) Cemetery Phil J. Donahue, undertaker, Lehigh and Kensington Ave. 1900 census, 2535 Lee St., Philadelphia, Ward 19, ED 405 (sheet 2A, page 148, dwelling 24, family 25) Reilly, Wm. K., head, white, male, b. June 1872, 27, married 3 yrs, born England, parents born England, emi. 1880, in US 20 yrs., first papers, butcher, 0 months unemployed, can read / write / speak English, rents, home (not farm) -----, Dora, wife, white, female, b. Oct. 1875, 24, married 3 yrs., 2 children born, 1 living, born PA, parents born Ireland, can read / write / speak English -----, Joseph A., son, white, male, b. Nov. 1897, 2, single, b. PA, f. b. Eng., m. b. PA Baby William was buried with my Bridget (McGarvey) Royle (d. 1897, so d. before baby William Reilly) and two of her daughters (who pre- deceased their mother). Bridget McGarvey was born c. 1862 in Co. Donegal, Ireland -- so could be related to Dora's parents who were reportedly born in Ireland. There are no known Doras in my tree, however. I know only that Bridget had a sister Catherine (married a McGee) and a brother John (married twice, no known children), both of whom also emigrated. I know nothing of any of the family who may have stayed in Donegal and haven't yet figured out where in Donegal they came from. Bridget McGarvey married Thomas Royle, who was born c. 1861 in Lancashire (Salford area), England -- so could be a relation of the father William Reilly who was born in England. My English Royles, however, have shown no connection with any Reillys (or any other Irish names), and were not Catholic (which is not to say that none of their family was, but I've seen no sign of it). If anyone recognizes these Reillys and knows of a McGarvey or Royle connection, please let me know. Otherwise, I hope this at least helps someone who's researching William and Dora. Regards, Claire K

    3. Hi everyone. In 1866 a Cochrane Hammond was a teacher and a Turnkey in Lifford Jail. Co.Donegal. He was earning 35 pounds per year. He also had his own accomodation. the Report doesn't say how long he was a teacher in Lifford. This was obtained from the Appendix to Forty-Fifth Report of the Inspectors General on the General State of The Prison of Ireland dated 1866 ; which are deposited in Boston Mass. USA Further on in the report it states " The school-teacher, who is also turnkey, was formerly employed in the model school of the National Board of Education at Belfast and understands the National System, but was never trained as a teacher. A Blackborard and some maps are much required for the school-room, which if provided would enable the teacher to give instruction on an improved system " Does anyone know if records survive for the model school of the National Board of Education at Belfast. ? There is a school named THE MODEL SCHOOL, in Belfast but its records only commence in 1908. Salary Books for various model school , but only from 1916 - 1926 files dealing with the management and maintenace of model schools are in existance, but only from 1868. Would appreciate if anyone on the list could shed some light on this. Many thanks folks Muriel

    3. I found it so ridiculously difficult trying to get my late father's school records. I e-mailed Raphoe National school several times asking if they had the records, they never replied. I then wrote several times enclosing stamped addressed envelopes, giving all personal details that could only be known to family..........they never replied. I was extremely fortunate, a recently discovered cousin made the journey to Raphoe National School and managed to get the details. There was only a few lines. Full name. Date Started Attendance Name of parent/guardian Date of leaving. Those few lines have made such a difference to my research. Prior to receiving the details, I had no idea with whom my father had spent his early years, the date he's left for England etc. The name of the guardian gave me details which I could never have known had I not got the records. In the last month I've twice written to the school again asking for details of other family members...they haven't replied. Why they have to make it so difficult for us, is hard to understand. It would seem that the only way to get the records still held at the schools is by making a personal visit..impossible if one doesn't live in the vicinity......if we were all incredibly wealthy we could commission professional researcher, whether records would be released to them is another matter. Possibly some kind soul living in the area would make a visit to the school on the researchers behalf, unfortunately when the researcher lives in a different area/country it's hard to repay the favour. Aren't we lucky to have fabulous people like Lindle and friends.. Good luck. Jackie.

    2. Here is the email I received about the primary school information. I hope this helps someone in their research. If I am able to get any records for the schools that my relatives went to, I will post them on Lindel and Bob's sites. Janice Friel Further to your e-mails below, the school records for Donegal held by the National Archives do not include those schools listed in your letter. Records of schools are actually the property of the boards of management of the schools and, unless deposited with an archives, can remain in the custody of the school. The records of schools in Donegal received as donations to the National Archives by the Department of Education and Science are to be found on our website at _http://www.nationalarchives.ie/topics/Nat_Schools/ns.html_ (http://www.nationalarchives.ie/topics/Nat_Schools/ns.html) while those received directly from the schools are to be found at _http://www.nationalarchives.ie/topics/Nat_Schools/schools.html_ (http://www.nationalarchives.ie/topics/Nat_Schools/schools.html) . If the schools in which you are interested cannot be found in these lists, I suggest that you contact either the Donegal County Archives, which also collects national school records (contact details on website at _http://www.donegalcoco.ie/services/communityculturalenterprise/Archives+Service/archivescollect ion.htm_ (http://www.donegalcoco.ie/services/communityculturalenterprise/Archives+Service/archivescollection.htm) ) or the schools concerned, if they still exist. 1. [DONEGALEIRE] Donegal School Records, whats available & how to get them
    2. Lindel
    3. I have a comprehensive list of school rollbooks and registers for Donegal online at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~donegal/school.htm Listed are what I have online as well as the schools hels at the County Archives Lifford, National Archives Dublin and those on LDS microfilm (the last two with references) I was at the County Archives in Lifford in June/July this year - its a small office with three staff - not all registers/records are held on site, so you have to book ahead and let them know what you are interested in, so they can have them there for you (takes a day or two sometimes to get them to the Archives) The books are as they were deposited and some I saw weren't in the best condition, but there is not the money or resources at this time to microfilm them - they are well looked after though and will not get any worse than they are. You need to go to the Archives yourself and view the registers - there's no staff to copy anything as large as a register for you. An alternative is to pay a researcher to go and do that for you............or if you know someone in Donegal, send them along in your stead. What they need is people who are interested in the schools to do what I do - film or record in some way, the content of the registers, then submit a copy to them for their records. On my visit I photographed the pages of a number of registers (with my helpful side-kick Connie and not so helpful son Liam, dozing at the table or popping bubble wrap the staff had given him). Now I'm home, I will be putting the images onto cd for them and including an index for each of the pupils in the rollbook/register with page numbers. That way at least, the old registers won't have to be handled too much............I cringed when handling one - the spine creaked and cracked as I turned the pages!! Hope that helps! All the best, Lindel Donegal Genealogy Resources - http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~donegal/

    1. [DONEGALEIRE] McGonagle, Callaghan, Doherty of North Town, Middle Town and Ballyhillion, Malin Head
    2. conaught2
    3. Is there anyone on the list researching the above names from those areas? My Grandmother came from Ballyhillion, Malin Head, but I can't find my Great Grandfather's brothers except for two of them. When last in Malin Head, Roddy the Jammer Doherty said that that when looking at the Griffith's Valuation and where our house is located that we must be part of the Cahir Dohertys and that two Cahir brothers moved over to West Town. Roddy said that one brohter was James Doherty and became known as the Babbys and that the other brother John, who moved to West Town was John and he became known as Briny. I am not certain about the connection but want to see if anyone on the list is connected to either one of these Dohertys. Hopefully then I can compare notes. There is also a James Doherty who was godfather to two of my great aunts and I haven't been able to locate him. Also does anyone know if the Ard Breac Dohertys of Slievbawn are related to the West Town Dohertys. Jim Doherty of Florida who is an Ard Breac Doherty is a cousin - his grandfather and my grandmother were first cousins. Great Grandfather Patrick Doherty also had a brother Denis who went to America, first to Braddock, Pennsylvania then Anaconda, Montana , then Los Angeles then to Vacville, California. Beannachtai, Margaret (Máiread)
