Thanks Bob That's great news,I hope the other companies do the same. I'm 76 now and if the companies don't change the restrictions I wouldn't even be able to rent a car. Cheers ! Frank McGonigal Ont.Canada. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Even if they do change it they will probably still want a letter from your doctor stating that you are in good health and able to drive. ----- Original Message ----- From: "hiflyte" <[email protected]> To: "Y-IRL" <[email protected]>; "IRL-Donegaleire-L" <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, November 07, 2008 11:22 AM Subject: [DONEGALEIRE] Breakthrough on age limitations for rental cars Peter S posted to another list and I think this should interest many on our Lists. If not today then it is creeping up on most of us. Bob Cdn -------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------- Older driver forces car hire firm to change ageist policies CHARLIE TAYLOR Fri, Nov 07, 2008 A man in his 70s has won a settlement forcing a car rental hire firm to scrap extra charges imposed on older drivers. The settlement has been warmly welcomed by both the Equality Tribunal and Age Action. In May 2006, Australian-based Christian Brother Anthony White attempted to rent a car at Dublin Airport but was told that because he was over the age of 70 he would have to pay an 'age surcharge' of €25 per day, an increase of 33 per cent on the normal rental cost. He also learned that on his next visit to Ireland he would be considered not eligible to rent a vehicle because he would be over the age of 75. Brother White, who had held a Heavy Vehicle Licence in Australia for over 50 years, objected and raised the issue firstly with the hire company, Irish Car Rentals Limited, and then with the Equality Authority. Following negotiations with the authority, Irish Car Rentals has abolished the surcharge for older drivers and the blanket ban on drivers aged over 75 years. It has instead introduced a safety assessment form which takes into account, individual drivers’ health, driving experience and existing motor insurance policy.

It has instead introduced a safety assessment form which takes into account, individual drivers’ health, driving experience and existing motor insurance policy. Welcoming the settlement, Niall Crowley CEO of the Equality Authority said: “The use of lower and upper age limits to govern access to insurance products and financial and other services is a widespread problem. Age limits exclude people without any consideration of their individual circumstances. "This settlement represents another step in eradicating the exclusion of older people by means of age limits. All car hire companies should urgently review their current policies and practices and remove any remaining age limits to ensure that they comply with the Equal Status Acts”. Br. White said he was "very pleased" with the outcome of this case while Irish Car Rentals also expressed satisfaction with the settlement. Age Action today said the case highlighted the "blatantly ageist policies adopted by some firms." “It is unacceptable that a person who can legally drive their own car in Ireland or is legally allowed to drive in their own country should be refused rental of a vehicle based on their age, or should face an increased charge as a result of their age,” said Age Action spokesman Eamon Timmins. “We need more people like Brother White to stand up and challenge such practices. By taking on this firm, and supported by the Equality Authority, he has done everyone a service," he added.

Dorothy New Zealand A couple of URLs that may be of interest to someone. Interesting site dealing with the 1881 UK census. A lot of work was put into these files by the transcribers extracting each from the main census. The 1881 Census contains details of many ships in UK ports. These records are useful for tracing seamen and passengers coming into or going out of the country. I need some guidance on researching my Irish roots. Andrew O'Neill born abt 1820 in Donegal is the beginning of my O'Neill family line. I have very little information on his arrival here in the USA. I start tracking him when he married Lucy Cavanaugh Doyle (widow of John Doyle) on 5 SEPT 1859 at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Minersville PA. They had 4 children baptized at the same church. On the 1870 US Federal Census the family of 4 O'Neill children as well as 6 Doyle children lived in Mount Carmel PA. I have been unsuccessful tracking his emigration to the US through ancestry.com. Any suggestions would be appreciated....Diane

Hi Meg, I just took a look at the online Eircom phone directory and there is one Brodbin still listed for Donegal - a Barry Brodbin in Laghey, approx 5 miles south of Donegal Town. I have never come across this surname before either - nice to see it has survived.
