Hello Eva. Thank you for this clarification. (Tried to thank you off-list, but it was rejected by your comcast server -- we have had some recent discussion on this issue on Fermanagh-Gold). Apologies to the list for therefore imposing my thanks on here. ray ----- Original Message ----- From: "Eva Doherty Gremmert" <[email protected]> Ray > It is not surname specific, but rather is a family history society that is > being formed in the Derry City area and they chose Foyle as a location > designation. > Eva

Hello Eva. As a NON-local, I am unclear as to whether this society is for people with the family surname of FOYLE (as in that great London bookstore); or whether the name of the society is intended to show that it is connected with the geographical area of Lough Foyle. Please forgive my ignorance. Hi Margaret, I am sending this to the whole list also in case someone spots something and can add to my information I to theirs. I am sorry I did not get back to you sooner. I guess we both have Craig relatives if not the same ones. You did express interest in "my" Craigs. In the book "Donegal Past and Present" by Joe McGarrigle, I found McGinty's Hotel, the first hotel in Donegal,1890 next to Craig's Bakery owned by my family. My grandmother Agnes (1879-1947) emigrated to USA (Boston) in 1895. Early in 1900's the hotel was sold to the Craigs. In 1924 Minnie Craig and her husband Samuel Beresford stopped doing busuness . In 1927 William Travers merged the hotel and bakery.. In 1937 Dominick Breslin bought the hotel and changed the name from Craig's to Abbey Hotel. I met his son Dominick who was still running hotel with his wife Mary in 1995. My greatgrandmother Margaret (Geraghty) Craig died in 1926. I have the prayer card for her found in my grandmother's prayer book. Mr. McGroarty who owned the Pub across the Diamond in Donegaltown, told us in 1995 that there were 3 Craigs that he knew: Jim, Barney, and Annie, a seamstress. He said they lost the hotel to the bank. None of the three married and he felt that their line of Craigs ended there. He knew them and told us stories about Jim who had served in World War I. I estimate that Jim was born around 1900, probably son of my mother's uncle John Craig (born 1865). John Craig married Addie McCabe ( I am a little doubtful of her dates.). My greatgrandfather, James Craig (b1847) married Margaret Geraghty They had children: John (b1865 or 1869 in Ballydevitt or Drumgornan) mentioned above Richard J. (b 1867) emigrated to USA 1895 -1900 Margaret Anne (b1869) Agnes C. b 1879 in Donegaltown , my grandmother. (I have her birth certificate that I obtained in government offices in Stranolar.) (Mary?) { Agnes had a niece Molly Berrill (Beryl?) who stayed with her in Boston in 1930 (US census). I can not find anything about her except I know she did mary a Jimmy Kerrrigan and they eventually lived in Ireland. I think John was father of Jim, Barney, and Annie. (All three lived in Ballydevitt according to Mr. McGroarty.) and also: Kathleen (Kitty) b 1899. I have good informatio about her and her descendents from her grandaughter now living in England. Dick who married Peg? and emigrated to USA and was living in the Bronx, NY, NY in 1940-1950. They had 4 children. Margaret who married Mick Maguire and emigrated to Staten Island, NY, NY They had 3 children. Lilly who married Jack Sharkey and moved to Birmingham, England, and had 3 children (I have contacted their son Michael, now a monsignor and have found other relatives through him.(see next) In 1995 we visited the Craig home in Ballydevitt and met the then owner, Grace McCloskey O'Flaherty, and also saw the thatched (by then tin ) roofed original cottage. Grace remembered Annie Craig from her youth when she got apples from a basket Annie kept on the porch for the children. She also knew of Lilly and directed us to Monsignor Michael Sharkey through information she had received that week from the Muldoons in Donegal who had seen him in Rome. In 1857 in "Noted on Donegal Towns", James Craig, a confectioner and grocer, was listed on the Diamond, Donegaltown, (from directions from Lindel) In 1871 the Derry Almanac lists James Craig, baker in Donegaltown. In 1901 census, Margaret Craig was listed on the Diamond in Donegal Town and living with her were Mary and Kathleen see above children of James Craig). This information came from Lindel. I found no Craigs that I can identify in Griffith's Valuations or the Tithe Applotments. Per haps these Craigs were not in Ireland then Mr. McGinty who owned a wool shop in Donegaltown in 1995 told me that the Craigs came from Scotland and were Protestants. My grandmother and her mother were catholic, but I remember that my aunt told me there were some ancestors from Scotland. I did find a John Craig (1804-1861)about the correct age to be my great great grandfather, born in Scotland and married to a Mary Sterritt (1810-1900). However, they had 4 children born in Scotland, then James born in Donegal in 1847 (right age for my great grandfather) , then went to Canada 1847-1852 and had three children born in West Canada. Unless they left an infant in Donegal or James later came back to Donegal, I do not think they are "my Craigs". I do hope I have added to your info about the Craigs, Margaret and I thank you for the info you gave me earlier. Perhaps someone else in DONEGALEIRE will recognize a name in this lengthy missal. I heard when I was in Donegal that there is an office in Lifford that has listings of properties where I could trace the owners of the Abbey(Craig's) Hotel. Does anyone know about this? Thanks Margaret and all !!!! Clare [email protected]
Ray It is not surname specific, but rather is a family history society that is being formed in the Derry City area and they chose Foyle as a location designation. I recently have became aware of a new family history society that is called the Foyle Family History Society or FFHS. It has been organized in Derry City, N. IRE. It is a fully formed organization, with a board, membership, monthly meetings and is associated with the Northern Ireland Family History Society. Membership dues for FFHS are £ 24.00 per annum. The meetings will be held at Derry Central Library on the first Monday of each month at 7.30 pm. Discussions so far have been about creating an archive of records for members and meeting content for future meetings. Acting Chairperson : Gerard Harvey Acting Secretary/ Treasurer : Tom McElhinney For further information you can contact Tom McElhinney at [email protected], or just go to a meeting. Godfrey Duffy's book, Tracing your Donegal Ancestors has a small section on estate records Estate Place Record Source Thomas Conolly, Drumholm, Donegal, Sales /rentals, NLI 347/15 NLI s the National Library of Ireland It has a catalogue online but I am not sure that it covers all its holdings. www.nli.ie I don't find it terrifically user friendly. Entering Thomas Conolly estate , brings up an estate in Kildare but that T Conolly also had land in Limavady, Co Derry- no rental lists that I can see.. I did find useful docs there on the Wicklow estate but they took some finding.
