    1. [DONEGALEIRE] TIMONY, William-Boultypatrick, Kilteevoge, Donegal
    2. Hi all... I am? looking for additional information on the Timony, Timmony, Timoney surname in Rossily, Drumhome, Donegal.? Based on information I found on my grandmother's birth record, I believe her mother, ANNIE ELLEN TIMONEY b 1875, dau of William and Catherine MCKAY(or MCCOY) TIMONEY is from this townland.? I've located a?William TIMONY?in the 1857 Griffiths valuation that could be my William.? Unfortunately, there wasn't enough information to confirm..does anyone know where I might find additional online information for Boutlypatrick townland in Kilteevoge parish, Donegal?? I know that Annie immigrated to the US in 1900 aboard the Peruvian, various records indicate it sailed from Glasgow and Moville on Sept 6th, then Londonderry on the 7th.? The Ships manifest indicates her last residence was Mullinasole.? She arrived in Boston, MA, USA and travelled to the home of her Uncle? Michael MCCOY in Portland Maine. Any and all information is welcomed and appreciated! Ellen

    3. Came across an interesting Street Atlas while out on the annual pre Christmas bag-carrying junket with 'She who must be obeyed'. It is part of a four volume series, covering the six cross-border counties. The maps are taken from the Ordnance Survey and the atlas is produced by Philip's, priced £5.99. Details are said to be on www.philips-maps.co.uk Although I had no particular interest in the area, I was so impressed that I have purchased the book that covers Co. Tyrone and Co. Fermanagh. While it is referred to as a street atlas, it covers the rural areas in great detail. All minor roads and other features such as rivers, lakes, forests etc. are included but best of all, the townlands are clearly listed. Scales are one and one third inches to the mile and two and two thirds inches to the mile so it does not show townland boundaries. I cannot be certain if it covers every townland but there seems to be an impressive list and there is an extensive index at the back. Definitely worth the price for anyone researching those areas and wanting to locate townlands. It also lists the postal code for each area.

    1. [DONEGALEIRE] Abstracts from the 1841 Census of Donegal
    2. Ben Palmer
    3. Hi I was fortunate to find my g-grandfather's family in the 1851 Census Abstracts. It struck me that this is a little used source of reference, probably because there are so few records. The 1841 abstracts that I could find amount only to about 60 families in County Donegal, totalling about four hundred names. I've posted them at http://www.movillerecords.com/census_extracts_home.html There are about 270 families in the 1851 abstracts, and I'll try and get these online before Christmas. They have been preserved due to the introduction of the Old Age Pension Act in 1908. This provided pensions for everyone aged 70 and above, but as compulsory registration of births was not introduced in Ireland until 1864 many people were unable to prove their age. To verify the claimant's age, details were checked initially against the 1841 and 1851 cencii. This information was recorded, and fortunately survived the 1922 fire which destroyed the original census records. The abstracts cover the families of pension applicants only, and were copied from the originals about 1908. The 1841 abstracts may (but not always) include: names from the 1841 Census the relationship between the individuals age (mainly children - including those born between 1841 and 1851) a cross reference to the 1851 Census, noting discrepancies in names and ages the comments of the investigating Officer maiden (or married) name of women recent deaths and those between 1841 and 1851 the Barony, Parish and Townland in which the family lived the pension claimant I hope you'll be as lucky as I have been .. ! My name is Nancy Reida Pilkinton and I live in New Zealand. My father William Andrew Fletcher was born in Convoy in 1899.His father was William Cunningham Fletcher died 25th February 1927 and is buried at Convoy I believe at a graveyard at the Presbyterian Church.I know there are gravestones at a church there and can only assume it is Presbyterian. Also buried there is his wife Mary Jane Fletcher nee Russell who died 22nd February 1938.Also buried there is his grandfather William died 20th May 1851,his wife Margaret died 8th October 1856,their children Samuel died 9th February 1870,Martha died 3rd April 1874,Robert 26th 1890,grandson Samuel 9th August 1895, gandaughter Rebecca 16th January 1917.It would seem either Samuel or Robert is my grandfather's father but no idea which. It is likely that my grandfather was a farmer. William and Mary had at least 7 children,William (my father),daughters Louie,Reida and Maud, and 3 more sons,Samuel,James and Robert. My father William and his brothers Samuel and James all emigrated to New Zealand in the 1930's.It would seem that Samuel worked in a bank in Convoy before that.Any information about this family would be much appreciated. 1. Re: [DONEGALEIRE] Sweeney/McSwyne/Langan: Magheraboy and Lurgybrack
    2. Hi Marilyn, Apologies if any of this is out of date. The Ask about Ireland website now has the maps of the GV which show exactly where Mary McSwyne (no space) lived (Magheraboy, Plot 1b): http://griffiths.askaboutireland.ie/gv4/gv_family_search_form.php The parish of Leck also shows a Patrick Longan (most folks were illiterate then so Longan is Langan), probably grandfather or your James as it is a very unusal name in Leck parish, living on Plot 7 in the townland of Creeve (Smith), and again, there is a map. He has a wee farm of 9 acres so would have been considered well off in those days whereas the McSwynes only had a tiny cottage. Sometimes it can be difficult to locate the plots on the AaI GV maps so you should use Bob Hilchey's map to locate the position of your townland first: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~bhilchey/MLeck.html Unfortunately, the AaI map seems to be the wrong one for Creeve (Smith) - it does not go far enough west so you will need to be a bit clever to find it. Let me know if you need help. I think Liam has told you about the modern Discovery series OS maps which are really the only way of locating places on the ground. Magheraboy and Lurgybrack. Also with the Sweeney/McSwyne or Langan families from these areas? I recieved this information from Ben Sweeney, a lovely man from donegal who has been a great help in getting info on my elusive Great-Grandfather James Langan "James Langan born 9/1/1876 -baptised 11/1/1876 priest Fr E, Gibbons, parents Mary Sweeney @ Patrick Langan, sponsor Grace Sweeney. The address was Magherabouy which is in the parish of Leck and if you check the 1857 griffith valuation you will find an Ann Mc Swyne which was the name given to the Sweeney, she could be Marys mother and they had no land and paid 5 shillings per year to the landlord Mr Armour and one of this generation still lives there.I think I know where Patrick Langan lived in a large 2 story hse at Lurgybrack which is still there in Leck parish." can you recommend a good map series to buy so I can get a better sense of how these areas work together. Liam suggests Google Earth4.3 at URL http://earth.google.com/ At http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~fianna/guide/towns.html you will find a list of the microfiche numbers to order maps for many Townlands that you may see at your local Family History Center. (look at www.familysearch.org) Go to http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~bhilchey/ and you will find maps outlining parishes, baronies, dioceses, civil parishes and Townlands that I have found most helpful Hope this helps. 3. Betty, before you go spending money on buying a new atlas; don't forget that there are lots of wonderful and free on-line maps available. My initial thought is about www.multimap.com But also remember that google now has MAPS as one of its "tabs" to search under. I'd recommend trying these before you fork out the money for a hard copy atlas. Also, on the County Derry site, a wonderful man called Murray from New Zealand has been inviting us to use the maps of Ireland which he is putting freely available online on his kiwicelts web-site. I personally have problems with using them ( I am useless with technology) , but most people write back raving about how wonderful they are. Here is his URL for them: http://ireland.kiwicelts.com:80/irishMap/ireMap.html Also, don't forget that there is the most wonderful information about most Irish towns, parishes, baronies, etc, in "Lewis's Topographical Dictionary of Ireland" c. 1837. Here is the URL for it at Library Ireland: http://www.libraryireland.com/topog/index.php AND: ... remembering your Scottish connections, here is also a URL for Lewis's later (1846) Topographical Dictionary of Scotland: http://www.british-history.ac.uk/source.aspx?pubid=308 (that same organisation also has his topographical dictionaries for England and Wales available) HTH: Ray in Oz.
