The Travers that I am referring to in Ballintra were definitely Catholics. A bit more is coming back to now that I think about it. The father of the two girls that I remember from the late 1940's and 1950's was Mickey Travers, who lead the procession through the town when my Uncle Fr Michael McGrane returned to Ballintra after his Ordination as a priest in 1945. I guess that Mickey would have been about 45 years old at that time. Patrick in sunny Sydney

Hi! The name was spelt Travers in the 1857 Griffith's Valuation - they were predominantly in the parish of Drumhome and look to have been Catholic. There was a Peter Travers in the townland of Ardbane or Laghy Barr - as Bridget married in 1862 then her father would have been the head of his household in 1857, so this one and only Peter Travers may be your man. There was also a John Travers born to Peter Travers and Mary McGlinchy 1 Nov 1865, registered in Laghy Bridget was born before 1864, so there will be no civil registration of her birth unfortunately - you can check the Catholic registers for Drumhome for other family members though, as they have been filmed by the LDs - the film details are - Catholic Parish Registers Includes baptisms, 1866-1912; marriages, 1866-1947. The Catholic parish of Ballintra is in the civil parish of Drumhome, and is also known as Drumhome. Parish registers LDS film no 1279237 Items 10-11 If you can locate a baptism of any children to Peter in those registers, the entry will give you the names of Godparents, which will give you more clues to the family. Bridget's marriage won't be in them, but you may find the marriage of some of her siblings, as long as they were after 1866. The RC registers for Drumhome did not start until 1866. The 1901 census covering Ardbane is on another LDS film - 1901 Laghy D.E.D. 16/1-31, 32c 1901 D.E.D. 17/1-28, 29c (file 1-2) - LDS film no 824868 Items 1-2 Hope that helps! Merry Christmas! There was at least one Travers in Ballintra twenty years ago when I was last there. Josie Travers who lived across the road from my grandmother. Her sister, Mary Travers, was the first girl I ever kissed, when I was about sixteen in 1954. Also I think I remember the name McGonigal from the time that I spent my summer holidays in Ballintra so long ago Patrick in sunny Sydney ----- Original Message ----- From: "Frank McGonigal" <[email protected]> To: "IRL-Donegaleire-L" <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, December 22, 2008 3:46 AM Subject: Re: [DONEGALEIRE] Travis > My wifes inlaw has TRAVERS from Ballintra....Elizabeth Travers b.1865 > married a Crawford. > Her father was John Travers I believe. > I'm only quoting from my notes etc.,but I could probably get more info if > necessary and relevant. > > Frank McGonigal Ont.Canada > ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "hiflyte" <[email protected]> > To: "IRL-Donegaleire-L" <[email protected]> > Sent: Sunday, December 21, 2008 10:57 AM > Subject: Re: [DONEGALEIRE] Travis > > >> Nan, >> Did a few checks with no luck >> Griffiths Valuation does not list any Travis surnames for Donegal >> The LDS/FHC/BIVRI2 files do not list any Travis surnames for Donegal >> either birth or marriage. >> >> Found Traverse - Travers at Bobs and Tithes at Lindels >> ................................................ >> One way would be to check the Birth Index films at your local FHC and >> see if you can find the surname in Donegal for those years. >> I do not know of a site for Travis in Donegal >> There is a TRAVIS mailing list on Rootsweb (RW) that you should check out >> http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/surname/t/travis.html >> and a TRAVIS Message board at RW >> http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.travis/mb.ashx >> >> Visit the following websites and take a look: >> Bobs: >> http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hiflyte/research/projects.htm >> Lindels: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~donegal/ >> Caroles: >> http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~donegaleire/Doncontent.html >> >> Sorry not much help with Travis in Donegal >> Merry Christmas >> Bob >> Cdn >> ======================================= >> >> Nan wrote: <SNIP> ....I am searching for information on Peter Travis >> farther of Bridget Travis Mullen. He came from Donegal the time period >> might be mid 1800's.... >> ================================ >> When replying to a digest post, quote only the specific text to which you >> are replying, removing the rest of the digest from your reply. In my previous reply I only addressed Travis since no other variations on the name were mention. Here are a number of Travers births in Donegal none with your given names, but one may give you a connection. Hi! I am searching for information on Peter Travis farther of Bridget Travis Mullen. He came from Donegal the time period might be mid 1800's. Bridget married Thomas Mullen 1862. Any help greatly appreciated. Happy Holidays to All. Nan
Nan, Did a few checks with no luck Griffiths Valuation does not list any Travis surnames for Donegal The LDS/FHC/BIVRI2 files do not list any Travis surnames for Donegal either birth or marriage. Found Traverse - Travers at Bobs and Tithes at Lindels ................................................ One way would be to check the Birth Index films at your local FHC and see if you can find the surname in Donegal for those years. I do not know of a site for Travis in Donegal There is a TRAVIS mailing list on Rootsweb (RW) that you should check out http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/surname/t/travis.html and a TRAVIS Message board at RW http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.travis/mb.ashx Visit the following websites and take a look: Bobs: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hiflyte/research/projects.htm Lindels: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~donegal/ Caroles: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~donegaleire/Doncontent.html Sorry not much help with Travis in Donegal Merry Christmas Bob Cdn ======================================= Nan wrote: <SNIP> ....I am searching for information on Peter Travis farther of Bridget Travis Mullen. He came from Donegal the time period might be mid 1800's.... ================================

Thank you Carol and Margaret for Stumpys Brae input Isn't this a wonderful site. Muriel
Recently we went to an Ulster Scott's night in the library in Ballyshannon, there was this guy who told us the story of Stumpy, it was riveting and then sung/recited the ballad. Margaret
