(Manfred Roux) Traveling to Belgrade and then visiting by car is the best option. If you want or need any documents from the municipal offices you have to visit during work week and operating hours in the morning. Best if you are announced and they have prepared the records you need. For visiting the parish priest and/or obtaining records from the church you need to find out which parish nowadays is administering the villages and where the records are located. Roman Catholic Church records and contact you will need the church office in Kula. For Reformed/Evangelical Church records I have to check but you will need to go to either Vrbas or Novi Sad. Price of these documents will vary but none should cost more that 10 euros per document if you guide manages to cut through the red tape of obtaining them on behalf of foreign citizens. Churches usually have a minimum fee set and a small donation directed at your ancestral parish would be customary. Plan to have your meals in larger towns because you will be visiting small villages and only if you are lucky there will be more than a half-decent bakery or a local pub to eat in. Local people will be the best help if you are looking for a specific house or other locations or help with finding ancestral graves in the cemeteries. Make sure that you network in advance a meeting with a village historian ( every village has one) or anyone who can help the most. Given the area you are visiting, if you have an interpreter try to find a bilingual Hungarian/Serbian speaker because you will probably make use of both of these languages. In any case getting an interpreter is recommended - you will most probably bump into people who speak English or German but the amount and quality of information would be limited. Have all your travel documents with you, and drive safely and respecting the speed limits - rental cars have a special set of number plates that make them "more visible" to the traffic police patrols. Prepare a printed booklet with your family history and photographs and if you can, have a copy or two that you can leave with the priest or anyone who could help you in the future. If you need any assistance or more information feel free to contact me, I will be in that region of Serbia until the school year starts in September. 2. What town is "Gara" (Raymond Reu) Gara is a village in Hungary close to border with Serbia, part of former Bács-Bodrog megye ( county). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gara,_Hungary I checked the Roman Catholic Church records for Gara and George FALTYUM born on November 25th 1853 is listed as legitimate child of Andreas Faltyum and Catharina Heifer, Roman Catholics, free citizens, with residence in Gara village, household number 32. Parents of Jozef VALTHUM, born in Ridjica village in 1845. are listed as residents of Ridjica, and for any link between the two families you will have to dig through the records in both of these villages and locate earlier records of interest. *** Jugoslava Ilankovic "Rodoslovlje" Serbian Genealogy Society www.rodoslovlje.com
