    3. Tony: I wonder if this is the same as the documents my Grandfather Schwarz sent to the Department of External Affairs in Ottawa. Dated March 30, 1971 . File 81-8-YUGO >From the pages that were sent, I was able to take the information and apply for restitution to the Serbian Government. What is interesting enough is that when the property, land and 50 acres of vineyards in Ridjica was confiscated, our family held Canadian Citizenship and were British Subjects. (Actually I wasn`t born until 1942 and they returned in 1939). What a mistake that was!! I just wonder if that would help my case with Serbia right now, but I doubt it. This is some of what the Canadian Government wrote: `For your background information we might explain that it was possible for a former owner of expropriated property in Yugoslavia to obtain limited compensation under an agreement concluded in 1948 between British and Yugoslav Governments provided they had Canadian citizenship or other British subject status on January 1, 1949.` The letter goes on to say that if one did not apply by February, 1951 the could not get compensation. Apparently it was published in the `Canada Gazette`. What is the Canada Gazette - and who ever heard of it. Further in 1951, people were trying to pay back the monies that they borrowed for their flights and trying to save every penny. They were poorer than the poorest. They weren`t even in Toronto in 1948, but were with my great uncle in Cleveland having just been released from Gakowa or Krushivjle. What a joke!!! rom: Tony Fieder via Sent: Wednesday, September 24, 2014 5:02 PM To: DVHH Subject: Re: [DVHH] Serbian Restitution My parents filed for restitution in 1974 from Canada. They owned farmland, a vineyard and a house in Ridica. Their request was denied by the Republic of Yugoslavia. They didn't file an appeal or apply again.
