Fortunately, Kessinger Publishing has made a photocopy of an original German edition and reproduced this essential work about Danube-Swabian history. After reading several histories of the Danube-Swabians, both literary and historical, I am fortunate to have read Mueller-Gutenbrunn's seminal novel, which hews closely to all available historical accounts of the migration to the Banat and Batschka regions from Ulm, Germany and down the Danube river. Anyone interested in the early history of the Danube-Swabians (or Donauschwaben) should begin with this book. Anyone interested in the history of the Communist genocide of the Danube-Swabians should begin with Fr. Wendelin Gruber's book, "In the Claws of the Red Dragon." Unfortunately, despite the fact that Herta Mueller was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2009 for her novels about the Communist oppression of the Danube-Swabian minority in Romania. At this time, Mueller-Guttenbrunn is still tarnished with an unearned reputation as a nationalist on account of his ethnic price for the Danube-Swabian minority during the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Thus, anyone wishing to reading his account of the "Great Swabian Migration" to Eastern Europe must be able to read German. ~By Erik Eisel (Huntington Beach, CA) Enjoy and learn, Jody McKim Pharr
