Jon -- are you sure there is not any other information besides Timosoara? Next problem is the surname Schmidt ... quite a common name probably in all the villages. I do have a suggestion. Trace this person as far as you can inside wherever they emigrated. If they married outside of Hungary records are possible. If they had children outside Hungary there could be records. If they died outside of Hungary there are records .... you have to find them. My suggestion is do not get discouraged. I have ancestors from Bohemia. That can be difficult to trace -- such a general area but many people just gave that as their origin. I found the birthplace of my great grandfather on a birth record in NYC for a child we did not know existed. Same for the great grandmother. In another case for an internet friend I located her great great grandfather's village of birth .... the name was a partial name written on a NYC birth record ... first four letters -- Nesp -- that was crossed out and Bohemia was written. But we found the village of Nespery. It was not the first record we found .... as usual it was the last one ...we had just about given up. So do not get discouraged -- you just have work in front of you .... and that is what genealogy research is all about. The correct name of the city is Timişoara (in Romanian) and Temeswar (in German) although in Germany it is sometimes also called Temeschburg. With over 310,000 inhabitants, Timisoara is today the second largest city in Romania and the economic and cultural centre of the Banat, in the West of Romania. According to its Internet page, the population of the city developed as follows: until about 1944, the Germans formed the largest group of the population. Today, Timisoara is mostly inhabited by Romanians (85.52%), but there still many Hungarians (7.65%), Germans (2.25%), Serbs (1.98%), Roma (0.96%), Swiss (0.5%) and Italians (0.4%). According to an estimate by the German Consulate in Timisoara, there are about 10,000 Germans in the city and its surrounding area. A Familienbuch for a city of this size would be an almost impossible undertaking, unless it restricted itself to only Roman Catholics or only Germans. According to http://www.dvhh.org/temesquarters/VII-Freidorf/index.htm there are books on Freidorf, a former village that in 1950 was incorporated as a district of the city of Timişoara. It is actually the village where Johnny Weissmuller, the famous swimmer and Tarzan interpreter was born: . Familienbuch der katholischen Pfarrgemeinde Freidorf/Banat und ihrer Filialen 1723-1823 by Krämer, Anton. [Family book of the Catholic parish of Freidorf/Banat and its filials 1723-1823]. 1991, Sindelfingen. AKdFf , DM 18, 167 pgs. Band 28. . Heimatbuch der deutschen Gemeinde Freidorf im Banat 1723-1973 by Wilhelm, Karoline Lotte, 1985, city unknown, 379 pgs. Most of the information in the book was provided by Lotte Wilhelm, Mathias Schreiner, Jakob Vorberger and Helene Marschang. . Tri-lingual booklet dedicated to Freidorf [Freidorf, by Johann DIRSCHL (church priest) & BOÉR Jenö, Timişoara, ed. Solness, 2003, 93 pgs, ISBN 973-8472-77-6] Many Germans lived in Freidorf, so it may be worth a closer look.
