Rita, The English word for Box Herndel is carob, in High German it is Johannisbrot. (Legend says that when John the Baptist was in the wilderness he ate carob.) It grows on trees and looks like a giant green bean pod, but brown in colour. I remember them from way back ‘home’. We would break them open and the in side tasted sweet. My mother never used them for baking. Ground carob flour can be used as substitute for cocoa. It gives cakes a chocolaty flavour. It is available in bulk food stores. Anne D.
