You are right, Nick. In in the rural areas they did not believe that we had left behind houses, barns, livestock, vineyards and fields. We arrived like beggars, dirty, malnourished, our clothes in tatters. Our horses were worn out nags from the strenuous trek and lack of feed. They called us Banater Gfrass = Banater rubbish/ refuse.
