I have a lot of info on my paternal grandfather, Frank Schuessler who came over to America in the early 1900's from Katy, Hungary. My info goes back to two previous generations, I believe. However, I have run into a brick wall with my paternal grandmother, Caroline/Karoline Zircher. She's mysterious, born in Nov of 1882, married my grandfather in St Louis, MO. I do not know from where she came other than Europe. I have locate another Caroline Zircher thru Ancestry.com and a lot of the info coincides with my grandmother until this other Caroline Zircher showed up as betrothed to a Wm Maurer in New Jersey. Further research showed she did marry him, had several children with him, died and was buried in New Jersey. So this particular Caroline Zircher is not my grandmother. If anyone has any ideas or help, please advise. She and my grandfather married around 1910. Would like to find some breakthrough on her as I've been searching for 3 or 4 yrs now. Thanks! Sharon
Sharon, I poked around a bit in US records to see what I might find for your Caroline Zircher & Frank Schuessler, figuring that it might be easier to get information on her via him. I found Frank on a New York ship passenger list: Franz Schüssler [transcribed as Schussler], age 25, single, arriving 16 April 1909 in New York on the ship Floride, departing Le Havre, France on 3 April 1909. I didn’t find him in the 1910 US Census, but did find him and Caroline in the 1920, 1930 and 1940 censuses. Of note for Caroline, her year of arrival and origins listed change a bit from census to census. 1920: year of arrival given as 1907, her birthplace given as Hungary, with a village name in parentheses that was crossed out. It’s hard to read, but it looks as though the village name was “Morizfeld” (Moritzfeld). Village names are crossed out for anyone else on this census page who had them listed, including Katy for Frank, so I think it’s possible that the enumerator wrote just more than was wanted — not that the village was wrong. Her parents’ birthplaces are listed as Hungary. 1930: year of arrival given as 1905, her birthplace given as Romania, parents’ birthplaces given as Yugoslavia. 1940: her birthplace given as Hungary (the other items are no longer listed). On Caroline’s death certificate from St Louis, her birthplace is given as Hungary, and her father’s name as Joseph Zircher. Moritzfeld, Temes, Hungary is now Moriţfeld or Maureni, Caraş-Severin, Romania. It’s one of the Romanian villages whose KBs are available through Ancestry.com rather than FamilySearch, and the records seem to be only partially transcribed. (There are also a suspicious number of Fircher/Fercher/Ferker names, so I suspect a problem with reading the old handwriting.) However, I was able to find a birth record for Josepha Carolina Maria Zircher, legitimate daughter of Josephus Zircher and Victoria Henri (sp?), born 1 November 1882 and baptized on 5 November. There is some more information on the birth record but honestly I’m having real trouble trying to read it. I can email you the birth record; let me know if you need the census records, etc. too. In the meantime, if anyone has the Moritzfeld FB, maybe they can do a lookup for you to start filling in more details. Frank Schussler and Caroline Zircher married in St Louis on November 19, 1910. I found their license on familysearch.org. They were married by a Justice of the Peace.
