True, Paul - it won’t help much in the case of an outright error in transcription. But it can help cut down on the number of different spellings you have to think of searching for, and having to type each one in individually (as is the case for FamilySearch, for example). -Linda > On Mar 8, 2019, at 9:35 AM, Paul Thompson <patjahsd@gmail.com> wrote: > > Not even Soundex can find everything. Not even Soundex can find everything. My grandmother was named "Tabea". In many transliterations, this comes in as "Tabca", so that the "e" became "c". Hello Barb. Without first names or potential year, I was only able to search with limited success. I did a general search originally on Olive tree (Ancestry) with the following results. I had a significant problem finding the manifest for my grandfather and the family. The stories were consistent in that they came around 1905-1907, stayed a few years and then returned. I searched for the manifest for years. Finally, I decided to narrow the date to 1-2 years and searched on his FIRST name only. Bingo. Seeing how his last name was written and then transcribed (a double whammy) no wonder I never found him using his last name. Hope this helps a little bit.
