    3. Hi to whom it may concern I just viewed the logo on the to left hand of the first page and I would like to ask you to make a small correction on the flag. Our flag is not Green-White but White-Green meaning the with should be where the green is and the green where the White is. I do know this error is made very frequently, however we should not make such a mistake and allow it to stand. 1. [DVHH] Schmidt / Kovac Family Slatinik Croatia
    2. pambyrne via
    3. Hello All! In July, I was lucky enough to travel to Europe to visit the villages of my ancestors. What an INCREDIBLE experience, and I cannot wait to return to visit my many new cousins!! My GGF was born in "Slatinik"...this is clearly stated on his 1905 Ellis Island record, as well as his naturalization papers. I believe he was referring to Drenjski-Slatinik, now Croatia, but I am open to alternative ideas here. My GGF came into Ellis ISland as JOSEF KOVAC (born June 27, 1885, Slatinik), although I knew him as Joseph J. SCHMIDT (he changed his surname back to Schmidt-German equivalent of KOVAC-sometime between 1920-1940). My mother thinks she remembers him telling her that his name was changed at Ellis Island BUT I am not sure that that is accurate and the following is why... In 1909 Josef Kovac/Schmidt's sister LIZA (born May 19, 1887, Slatinik) came over under the name LIZA KOVAC. Also, she refers to her father in Slatinik as JANOS KOVAC. If GGF's surname was changed to KOVAC at Ellis, why would his sister and father be going by KOVAC as well? Or maybe they used KOVAC since Liza was going to stay with her brother, Josef Kovac in Passaic and it was easiest to keep the surname consistent? My BRICK WALL is in locating my GGF's birth record. I scoured the Catholic church books which covered 1885 and 1887 for the Drenje parish when I was in Osijek. No sign of my GGF or his sister! So now my question is...could he have been a practicing Lutheran at that time? Or is Slatinik referring to Podravska Slatina instead of Drenji-Slatinik? I asked a friend who was born in Slatinik in the 1930s if there were any Evangelist/Lutherans living in Slatinik-Drenji that he was aware of, and he thinks not. I do know that my GGF converted to Lutheranism in the USA (again my mother believes this happened AFTER he arrived in the US...but memory can be inaccurate as we all know all too well)! Does anyone out there know anything about the KOVAC/SCHMIDT family from Slatinik who can help me? My GGF traveled on the La Lorraine in 1905 from Le Havre. They departed 1/28/1905 and arrived in New York on 2/4/1905. He traveled with the following fellows from SLATINIK: JOSEF HIRT - age 28- going to Anna Hafner/Hamfer?- Passaic, NJ JOSEF KOVAC -age 19- also going to Anna Hafner/Hamfer - Passaic, NJ(my Great Grandfather) CATERINA SCHNEIDER- age 27- going to Andreas Hafner/Hamfer- Passaic, NJ ANDREW KöNIG- age 18- going to Heinrich Biepel/Biefel?-Akron, Ohio LEONHARD LEHR- age 18- going to Andreas Hafner/Hamfer- Passaic, NJ PETER GUNHEISER (Oumheiser?)- age 23- going to brother-in-law Heinrich Biepel- Akron, OH MARTIN SCHADL- age 25- Stamfer/Hafner/Hamfer- Passaic, NJ P.S. I did find PLENTY of stones in the cemetery in Slatinik that had German given names with the KOVAC surname... P.S.S. My GGF Schmidt DID travel to East Germany in the early 1960s to visit family...he also sponsored a nephew who came over in the 1950s, tho we are not sure where he came from (Croatia or Germany). The point is there were survivors who made it to Germany after WW2. We know nothing more than that. Thank you all so very much for your assistance! Pamela Byrne, Bedford, NH

My grandfather was in Chicago before 1923(when my uncle was born.) I don't know how long he was here. He worked as a blacksmith. I am also looking for my father's side of the family. He is from Weissekirchen Bela Crkva. His mother is buried here with him. Maybe I can trace him like my mother's family. Suggestions would be helpful. 3. Thank you very much for your help Jugoslava! Message: 1 Date: Tue, 5 Aug 2014 12:17:44 +0200 From: jugoslava <yugaya@gmail.com> Subject: [DVHH] 2. Rollcall: GERICH/Baja + BUKL/Baja (Mark Gerich) To: donauschwaben-villages@rootsweb.com Message-ID: <CAFZ5PR5MQ+PFgksRHYt=ui+do9=O9vHZB+QtJcmR30yU_S4p=g@mail.gmail.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8 1. Working back into the past: obtaining one generation further into the past is fairly easy - based on the original birth records of the children from 1875. and 1873. who were born as legitimate and names of the parents. - Istv?n GERICH and Alojzia PUKLI were married in Baja in year 1868. Their record may not be indexed and available on familysearch because this marriage was recorded in separate set of military marriages records . Original marriage record lists his regimental information, their age and names of their parents, and states that they were both born in Baja. Working further into the past is a big task, there are six parishes of records to go through in Baja town alone. I suggest that you register for Kalocsa diocese e-archive: http://archivum.asztrik.hu/?q=en/oldal/registration and set aside a substantial amount of time to go through them and plan your research in detail. Due to to surnames and first names that were recorded in Hungarian, Latin and Croatian language spellings, and especially changes in surname spelling, you must be very thorough and document all variants and possibilities. Stephanus = Istv?n Gerich = Gerity = Gerits = Geritz = Gerics = Gerits =... Keep in mind that due to additional regulations and permits needed for active soldiers to marry many of the children were born and registered as illegitimate before parents managed to get married. Baja parishes have separate records for children who were born out of wedlock, and often there are later date notes in the original records, so you will need to search the birth records for children registered under maiden surname of the mother as well. Records available for Roman Catholic Church in Baja cover the period 1722-1968. 2. For Aloysia Bukl: you need to find her birth and baptism record and document all variants of the surname. Baptism records of her children, indexes of these baptism records, her marriage record and the index of marriage records all have differences in surname spelling: BUKL PUKL BUKLI PUKLI 3. Consider the possibilities that family was not Donauschwaben and/or that they were not originally Roman Catholic when you research earlier origin of GERICH family from Baja. *** Jugoslava Ilankovic "Rodoslovlje" Serbian Genealogy Society researcher

    3. For Roman Catholic Church parish in Jasenovo and Češko selo the records are now either in state archive or in the parish from which the former filial village parishes are administered. For Roman Catholic church vital records you should contact: - Zrenjanin diocese ( zrenjaniska biskupija) and parish priest. KIRÁLY TIBOR Miletićeva 5. 26340 Bela Crkva Tel.: (013) 853-001 If you contact the priest do that in Serbian or even better in Hungarian ( his mother tongue) and limit your questions to asking about one specific ancestral record at a time. Consider a small donation to the church because it is customary. - Historical archive Bela Crkva ( Istorijski arhiv Bela Crkva): http://www.arhivbc.rs/index.php/yu/kontakt Queries to historical archives must be submitted in official request for information format. Request form for transcript of birth records for Bela Crkva archive: http://www.arhivbc.rs/images/dokumenta/Zahtev-Rodjeni.pdf Requests for documents can be submitted via email or mailed to them. You will also have to pay for each such submitted look up request in advance, regardless of whether they have the information or not - that is why you should try checking whether they have the records you need first. - Civil vital records for people born after cca 1880 are still located in municipal offices in most cases. You can obtain official certificate if you know the names of parents and exact location of birth and birth date but you will need a mailing address in Serbia and someone with Serbian ID number to order it for you. There is no online ordering format for submitting requests for birth and other certificates based on civil vital records from Bela Crkva municipality, and you have to contact the municipal office and clerk for the village directly via telephone: http://belacrkva.rs/opstinske-sluzbe/ - There is no evidence in period records which would suggest that family Wertheim from Češko selo / Chehfalva was Jewish at the time when your ancestors were born. There were several branches of Jewish Wertheim families though living in other parts of former Yugoslavia at the time, and you will find information on them in Holocaust databases and official Victims of War 1941-1945 census.
