    3. In today’s Rochester, NY, newspaper, there was an obit for an Eric G. Skwirba of Greece, NY (a suburb of Rochester, NY). Mr. Skwirba died at the age of 82. Since he was a member of the Rochester Schwaben Verein and the German-American Sports Club, I thought I would post this info in the possible event that he might be related in some way to member(s) of the list. Mr. Skwirba was predeceased by sisters, Gertrude, Hadvig, and Lise. Survived by sister Gerda Schiller. Also survived by wife and children.     3. My Oma always added a little sliced fresh garlic and some fresh ( if possible) dill. A little vinegar and paprika with the sour cream is good, or you can substitute plain yogurt. Always my favorite salad. Be sure to slice the peeled cucumbers paper thin.     3. Looking in my German dictionary for anything starting with verm, I found the verb infinitive vermählen which means to marry or give in marriage. This might be the word since it is right after the wife's name. One added dill which reminded me that the salad I had in Romania was made with dill weed. I so appreciate all your responses and look forward to recreating this dish to relive a fond memory I have from my visit to my ancestors' hometown way back in 1970. Mix in the sour cream (or yoghurt) and a dash of vinegar; . Add squashed garlic, pepper and paprika (to taste). *I know that some vitamin C is lost this way, but that is how the Banat villagers did it (probably to get rid of any bitter taste of the cucumber).     3. Cucumber Salad with Sour Cream (Tejfeles uborkasalata) from June Meyer's Authentic Hungarian Heirloom Recipes cookbook. This cucumber salad is by far one of the most delicious and refreshing salads you can eat. It has a wonderful cucumber flavor that is enhanced by the garlic and sour cream. Originally this was a summer salad to accompany roast meat or chicken dishes. Now that we have cucumbers available all year round we can enjoy this dish all year. I use a slaw slicer to slice the cucumber thinly enough to see through! As a child I always enjoyed peeling and then grooving the cucumbers with the tines of a fork before my mother would slice them. I loved the refreshing cool cucumber spray that would mist my face. * 4 cucumbers * 1 small clove of garlic * 1 teaspoon sugar * 1/4 teaspoon salt * 1/4 cup of good vinegar (not red) * 3/4 cup of real sour cream Peel cukes. Drag fork tines down length of peeled cucumbers to create long groves that will look very nice when you slice cucumbers very, very thin. Put in mixing bowl. Peel and chop clove of garlic. Add Salt and Sugar to slices. Mix in sour cream. Add vinegar (I like to use "Marukan seasoned gourmet Rice Vinegar" orange label) and toss well, I use my hands, till cucumbers slices and sour cream are all frothy and foamy. Place in serving dish and sprinkle a little paprika on top for decoration, and serve well chilled. This will stay good in refrigerator for a few days. NOTE: Originally the cucumbers would be salted with a lot of salt and then squeezed of juices. My family is know for everybody having very High Blood pressure and need restrictions on salt. We no longer pre-salt. If you follow the direction you will have a healthy salad. Do not omit the sugar. A secret ingredient for a lot of Hungarian recipes, is, a spoonful of sugar! Enjoy!!     3. A while ago somebody asked for a recipe for Susskraut (Süsskraut). I rarely stray into the recipes, but since I have not seen any reply to that request, I am going to rely once again on my memory. So here goes: · Cut the head (or heads) of cabbage into four or more parts; · Boil in salty water; · Make a brown roux (Einbrenn; Inbrenn) using oil or lard and white flour; · Add a dash of paprika into the roux (some add a little chopped garlic); · Stir the cooked cabbage into the roux; · Add ground black pepper to taste (optional). To make a meal out of it (the times were hard) we also added slices of boiled potatoes. I remember my father joking about this meal: “Today we are going to have something sweet for lunch!” I do not remember ever having it as an accompaniment to meat (Zuspeis). Nick Tullius
