Does anybody have information about this town my relatives (fetzer, ohnesorg, hofler, czimmer, Lax) lived and died here. I have found many of their records online but have not been able yet to trace them far back enough to know when they arrived and from where they came? How do i find records of emigration/immigration from Germany to Hungary. I would like to access more local history. For example The EU funded reconstruction of the church there so there must be something important about it because the town is too small to justify such attention. Also, would like to get a list of graves in the cemetary to find out if my relatives are buried in this beautiful hilltop resting place. There is a war memorial with Fetzers and hoflers on it, but i would like to know if i am related to those individuals and how. I would like to know how the locals endured the first and second world wars. Did the Red Army take some of the kisdorogans to the Donbas or other work camps and what happened when they returned. I would be interested in any old pictures and old maps to understand where exactly my relatives lived. On there birth record there is nothing more than s number. Thank you to anybody who can point me in the right direction! Hello -- I recently discovered that I have Donauschwaben ancestors and now I am trying to figure out how to fill in the blanks. My ancestor is: Philipp WALD b. 1807 in Bulkes d. 2 Feb 1864 in Mramorak m. to Katharine PRINZ (do not know where they were married) I have gleaned much information from the Mramorak Church Books and other Mramorak documents. While searching the web, at Bulkeser Ahnenforschung and at Familienregister Bulkes I found: WALD Philip b. 1739 Dornholzhausen in Hessen - Nassau, came to Bulkes as part of a protocol settlement. d. 1812 at the age of 75 years in Bulkes. m. 9 Jan 1763 in Dornholzhausen to Anna Magdalena, b. 1743 in Dornholzhausen, d. in 1812 in Bulkes at age 70. I would like to know if these 2 Philipp WALDS are related and am not sure where to look. Can someone point me in the right direction? Thank you in advance for any assistance provided. Stephanie Funck
Hi, My grandfather Petru Spiesz was born in Dognecea (Dognatschka), nowadays Romania, in 19/9/1909. I'm wondering if somebody has this book and can help me with any information. BR/Eduardo.
My family has been making this poultry dressing for over two hundred years. It is from my cookbook, "June Meyer's Authentic Hungarian Heirloom Recipes" cookbook. I hope you like it. Wishing everyone a most Happy Thanksgiving Day. June Parsley Stuffing for Chicken, Turkey or Veal This recipe is generations old. It was the only stuffing we ever used and I think it is the best I have ever tasted. My Heirloom Stuffing is filled with chopped fresh parsley. It is the primary flavor, along with celery, onion, butter. The texture is firm, like a meat loaf and is cut in slices. The women in the family would compete with one another to make the most tasty and best stuffing. This is not for any one who is counting calories. But this stuffing imparts the best flavor to the chicken, turkey or veal. I am sure that once you taste this dressing it will become a favorite of yours also. * 1 large loaf of sliced white bread or 2 small loaves * 1 onion * 6 ribs of celery along with leaves * 2 or 3 bunches or 2 cups or more of FLAT LEAF PARSLEY (Do not substute curley) * 1 1/2 sticks of butter * 1 cup of water * 4 whole raw eggs * 1 tsp. salt * 1/2 tsp. pepper Cut bread into cubes, put into large mixing bowl. Finely chop washed parsley and place in bowl with bread cubes. Dice 1 onion and saute with butter in frying pan till translucent. Slice or dice ribs of celery and celery leaves and saute along with onions. Add 1 cup of cold water to onion, celery and butter mixture to cool it off. Add 1 tsp. salt and 1/2 tsp pepper to bowl with bread and parsley. Add 4 raw eggs to the bowl of bread and parsley, along with the onion and celery mixture and mix well with your hands. The stuffing should NOT be hot when you stuff the poultry. Really PACK the stuffing well into the bird. Any stuffing that does not fit can be stuffed into the cavity formed by the skin over the breast when it is separated by your hand to form a pocket. Roast your bird as you normally would. Baste the bird with butter and juices cooking out. When bird is done roasting, you should be able to carve up bird and open the breast area to lift out the loaf of parsley stuffing and slice into portions. Don't forget to make a wonderful gravy with the juices. It is also good the next day cold from the refrigerator. Enough for a small turkey or big Chicken. Alicia, for sure your great grandfather, Rudolph Hausner, was of German origin and German speaking, he lived in the former Austrian-Hungarian empire, so when he emigrated he had a Hungarian passport. In the Hungarian census records he was asked for mother language and nationality. The US immigration records usually state as origin German and birth place Hungary. I found his baptism record on 19 Oct 1885 in Szabolcs here: http://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:X66G-J3T His family settled there to work as miners to the Mecsek coal mines. This place is since 1947 part of Pecs (= Fuenfkirchen), the capital of Baranya county. This county belongs to the three counties in today southern Hungary which is called "Swabian Turkey" because of the many German settlers who came there in the first half of the 18th century. But the coal mines around Pecs attracted also miners from Slovakia (which was part of Austrian-Hungarian empire too). Here you find the church where he was baptized: http://hu.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mecsekszabolcs (partly translated by Google): Szabolcs medieval village was continuously inhabited city during the Turkish occupation. Until the mid-19th century, it was only for a short period of time with non-Hungarian-speaking inhabitants. In the begin of the last third of the century, German and Czech-speaking miners settled here. The Szabolcs coal mine started in the late 19th century. There are more than two places and even a county in Hungary whith the name Szabolcs, often in combinations like Mecsekszabolcs. You find the parish books of Mecsekszabolcs on microfilm in your next family research center. In our AKdFF library we have copies of this film rools. If you are happy you find the marriage record of his parents there too. If you can find the marriage record of Rudolph Hausner and Christine Prusch and her birth date&place you get more informations, possibly also on their death certificates. If we can help with your search please let us know, but then give all dates and certificates you have. They are for sale on eBay and although they are of interest to me as they may contain birth notices of my great uncles, I cannot afford to buy them :-( but I thought someone on the list might be interested. http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&id=361019380547&alt=web http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&id=361031748926&alt=web http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&id=361031758056&alt=web http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&id=371128623242&alt=web http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&id=371130343665&alt=web If anyone on the list does buy them, please keep me in mind! I am working on this family, my mother's, and find that Lechers were also in Kleinbetschkerek. I would like to know where I can get a copy of the familienbuch for Kb. Also, is there anyone actively researching this family through DVHH? Barbara Drescher Layman Portland TN
Thank you all for helping. There is no rush for me to find out right away.Im a mother of 6 children and with the holidays things are pretty crazy here.Ive been working on my tree a long time so a few more months won't matter :) I should clarify I was told that there are 2 Szabolcs in Hungary. One in the north and one in the south by Pecs. Its the southern one on Rudolphs baptism certificate. How does one find out for sure if there is donauschwaben in their family? Is it clearly stated on a document or its more a hypothesis or assumption? Alicia
Hello Alicia, Welcome to our list. I do have Donauschwaben ancestors. My families were originally from Germany but settled in southern Hungary after the Turks were driven out. My families settled in the village of Mucsi, Tolna, Hungary. From about four hundred German settlements in Hungary, Mucsi was one of only twenty-four which were repopulated after the 150 year long Turkish occupation. The new settlers were peasants and artisans from around Fulda in the Hessen province of Germany and were described as Stifollers - from Stift Fulda. They undertook the major part of the reconstruction of the almost entirely destroyed country and established a high standard of agricultural and industrial society. My Martin family lived in Mucsi for over 200 years, but about 1881 they moved to Pecs (Funfkirchen) where my great grandfather worked in the Berg Coal Mine in the Mecsek Hills outside the town from August 1882 until September 1892. Then he immigrated to the Pittsburgh area in 1892 where he worked in the coal mines, and his wife and children immigrated in 1893. In October 2006 I was fortunate to be able to visit Hungary and see the town of Mucsi. We also spent three days in and around Pecs which has been called the Jewelry Box of Hungary. It is a delightful town full of history and charm. You might like to check my web page for Mucsi which is sponsored by the DVHH - http://www.dvhh.org/musci/ . The people in Mucsi spoke a German dialect, and on the various U.S. records for my family, I find them recorded as being from Germany and Austria. It was only later records on which they gave their place of birth as Hungary. My immigrant grand aunt stated she was born in Pittsburgh (!!!) on her S.S. application, but I have her baptism record from Pecs. Several of her siblings were born in Szabolcs. I would suggest that you need to pursue further research to see if your family was Donauschwaben. Because they lived in Pecs would not make them automatically part of that cultural group. Best of success with your research.
