I heard the most when my parents played cards with my aunts and uncles - it was extremely crass swearing but in Serbian - according to my mom German's didn't swear - LOL and usually things were said in regard to comparing people to animals in German. Of course, I had to get to the bottom of what the Serbian swearing was - my parents would just crack up laughing when I asked them what they were saying - I was very good a repeating it correctly. About 7-8 years ago I found out. When we visited Europe a couple of years ago and we took a road trip to from Austria to Serbia, I noticed my cousin saying those same words during road rage moments. Hi Lori, My family lived in North Dakota, so this may be a Dakota thing, but Mom was the only one I have ever heard say "Ohhh Isschh". Well, I also remember the police woman in "Fargo" said it! Probably not a Donauschwaben thing. My German father-in-law often said, "Sacrement noch a (ein) mal"! and "Pfeif und Honig" and "Maria und Josef"! Hello Dan, thank you for the offer. My ancestors came from one of the german speaking sections of Alsace and Lorraine. I have no town suggestions. I am looking for Martin Franzwa born approx.. 1744 and Katharina Bahl born approx.. 1742. I have no parent information. They married July 1, 1766 in Apatin. I have the Stader books volumes one and two but they did not help. I appreciate any help. Hi Dan, thank you for your kind offer. Please look up my family name SUCHER - my ‚oldest‘ relative is a DOMINIK SUCHER who married in 1802 in Bela Crkva/Weisskirchen, Banat - he or his fathers immigrated from Alsace etc, that is all I ‚know‘... Roy could you tell me if the Friedl surname comes up in your records? My grandfather's description of where his family came from sounded like Alsace. The last name I have this family is in the Mercydorf book, but was told by family Sigismund Friedl would be the one who decided to come to Hungary with his family. Thank you in advance for any assistance you might be able to give. Glenn, I just thought I'd mention there was a settlement by the name of Elsass in the Kutschurgan district of Russia, not to be confused with the Elsass (Alsace region) in France. I have checked the Krummes Elsass CDs for a listing of a village named Elsass and it does not appear. If there is such a village, I do not know where it is. Hi Greg, Elsaß = Elsass (Alsace) is the region in eastern France ( German = Frankreich) from which, together with its neighbouring region Lothringen (Lorraine), many of the Donauschwaben emigrated from. You will have to be more specific, if possible, as to which village your ancestor came from. I'll go through the villages as time permits to see if I can come across this name. The data has been transcribed into typed text and is in German (not photocopied church records). My Engel ancestry has been reported in various sources to be from the village of Lützelstein in Alsace (now called La Petite Pierre). Dr. Hein's research confirms that this is correct.I am offering my time to anyone who wishes to have any lookups done on these CDs.
