    3. Hello Rose, What a treasure! The articles on the feast days and customs of the DS in Hungary are most interesting. Some were celebrated in Syrmia as well. With our people going through so much poverty and stress after the war it is no wonder that they could not be kept up. I remember ( in my younger years) going to the Schwaben Club in Toronto when they had an annual Traubenfest or Weinfest , a Faschings Ball and Schlachtfest. Before there even was a Schwabenclub (1950s) we attended many celebrations and dances at the St. Patrick’s church hall. One year Father Kroetsch told us that some of the other priests admonished him for planning to have alcohol available at the new year’s eve dance (with quite a few minors). Alcohol was available anyway and there were no ‘drunks’ in at the celebration. We went there for the fun, not to get drunk. I don’t know if they still have those or anything similar. Memories are made of this.. Anne, in finally sunny and warm Ontario

    3. @at individuals from the list who expressed their fear and concern for the fate of vital records in Serbia because of the devastating Balkan Flood: I am happy to inform you that all vital records in Serbia are fine since vital records that are stored in municipal offices in Serbia have been since long time ago backed up in both paper format and digitally and in case than anything did happen to them can be researched in archives and central municipal branches. There is also more than one million people evacuated and displaced regionally by these floods who have lost their homes and livelihoods and everything. Thanks to unprecedented solidarity of kind people from around the world who expressed their concern for fate of these people, where possible, the efforts of clean up are underway and humanitarian help to accomodate, feed and clean victims of the flood has been poring in. Biggest concern at the moment are lack of medical materials and hygiene products and disinfectants. 3. Hello Henry, I have no recollection of such a festival, as I lived in the city, but it's quite possible that it was observed in my ancestral villages. But I do remember hearing the old farmer's adage, "Peter und Paul macht dem Korn die Wurzeln faul"--roughly translated to "Peter and Paul cause the roots of the grain to rot", meaning that around June 29th the growth cycle of the grain is completed, and if it isn't harvested at that time, the roots will rot, causing the grain stalks to fall to the ground. So that would be the time to begin with the threshing and harvesting, leaving little time for celebrating. 3. Thank you Eve! I have a lot of family from villages along the Sava that I was hoping to someday go search for records in. There aren't any OSBs yet for my Syrmian villages, and I hope the local records weren't destroyed by the flooding. 1. [DVHH] Peter and Paul: June 29th

    3. The Church calendar lists June 29th as the Festival of St. Peter and St. Paul. In the Danube Swabian communities in Somogy County in Hungary this also became the occasion for a special dance and a kind of mini-fair for the children of the village where there were all kinds of rides, games and special baking, candies and sweet drinks. On several occasions in my childhood while growing up in Canada my parents and their friends would hold a special dance and set up a “fair” for us children. Like many of our other village customs and traditions it did not survive. When my parents spoke of the event it appeared to be the last chance for the young people and young married couples in the village to have a “good time” before the hard work of harvesting began. Like many of our festivals it was associated with the farming work cycle. The tradition in Somogy County came from Hessen but I was wondering if other members of the DVHH have any recollections or knowledge of this festival in their area of settlement and whether any of the organizations in North America still carry out this tradition in their calendar of events or did so in the past. I would be interested in hearing from you about your experiences or recollections as would others. Henry Fischer
