(Manfred Roux) Traveling to Belgrade and then visiting by car is the best option. If you want or need any documents from the municipal offices you have to visit during work week and operating hours in the morning. Best if you are announced and they have prepared the records you need. For visiting the parish priest and/or obtaining records from the church you need to find out which parish nowadays is administering the villages and where the records are located. Roman Catholic Church records and contact you will need the church office in Kula. For Reformed/Evangelical Church records I have to check but you will need to go to either Vrbas or Novi Sad. Price of these documents will vary but none should cost more that 10 euros per document if you guide manages to cut through the red tape of obtaining them on behalf of foreign citizens. Churches usually have a minimum fee set and a small donation directed at your ancestral parish would be customary. Plan to have your meals in larger towns because you will be visiting small villages and only if you are lucky there will be more than a half-decent bakery or a local pub to eat in. Local people will be the best help if you are looking for a specific house or other locations or help with finding ancestral graves in the cemeteries. Make sure that you network in advance a meeting with a village historian ( every village has one) or anyone who can help the most. Given the area you are visiting, if you have an interpreter try to find a bilingual Hungarian/Serbian speaker because you will probably make use of both of these languages. In any case getting an interpreter is recommended - you will most probably bump into people who speak English or German but the amount and quality of information would be limited. Have all your travel documents with you, and drive safely and respecting the speed limits - rental cars have a special set of number plates that make them "more visible" to the traffic police patrols. Prepare a printed booklet with your family history and photographs and if you can, have a copy or two that you can leave with the priest or anyone who could help you in the future. If you need any assistance or more information feel free to contact me, I will be in that region of Serbia until the school year starts in September. 2. What town is "Gara" (Raymond Reu) Gara is a village in Hungary close to border with Serbia, part of former Bács-Bodrog megye ( county). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gara,_Hungary I checked the Roman Catholic Church records for Gara and George FALTYUM born on November 25th 1853 is listed as legitimate child of Andreas Faltyum and Catharina Heifer, Roman Catholics, free citizens, with residence in Gara village, household number 32. Parents of Jozef VALTHUM, born in Ridjica village in 1845. are listed as residents of Ridjica, and for any link between the two families you will have to dig through the records in both of these villages and locate earlier records of interest. *** Jugoslava Ilankovic "Rodoslovlje" Serbian Genealogy Society www.rodoslovlje.com
Hi Ray, Gara is a village cca 10 km North from Gakowa. The present Hungarian-Serbian border is just between the 2 villages. See Gara listed in the DVHH Batschka village index: http://www.dvhh.org/batschka/village/index.htm#G and from Wikipedia: "The village is first mentioned in a 1290 document. The name is derived from the Garai family name. The most commonly accepted theory claims that the word Gara originates from a Slavic word meaning hill. (The original village was situated on a small hill, at a distance of 4 kilometers from its current location.)" I have just found this - perhaps most of you already know, but of great interest if you have family that immigrated to Brazil. There is a photo of the individuals - that for some could be quite a thrill. This link takes you to my personal family search so simply put your own surname search in and see what you might find in these records. https://familysearch.org/search/record/results?count=20&query=%2Bsurname%3ADautermann~%20%2Bresidence_place%3ABrazil~&collection_id=1932363 Eve -- Syrmia Regional Coordinator http://www.dvhh.org/syrmia

Hi, Linda, We travelled to Ravno Selo (Schowe) just last month. We flew into Belgrade, and since our plane arrived after 10 pm we took a cab to Belgrade (cost about 20 USD) and stayed in the city at the Life Design Hotel http://www.lifedesignhotel.rs/ which was fine. Next morning we picked up our rental car at the airport and drove to Ravno Selo, about 100km, one hour driving time. In the evening we returned to Novi Sad, which is only 40km and a thirty minutes drive from Ravno Selo. There we stayed at the Hotel Centar http://www.hotel-centar.rs/ which was fine too. I can recommend both hotels. If you need further information, please contact me. G'day, I have a question about the Deutsche Afrika Korps and am asking if anyone is familiar with it. I am looking for my family and I have recently discovered my Oppa Franz Kaiser was drafted in 1941 from his home town Gr Betschkerek. He was 17 when he was drafted and was sent to Africa. Later he was sent to Egypt as POW and then returned to Wolfsegg, Austria (not sure when or the time frames). He worked in Vocklabruck building the Flukolager after 1948. I have photos taken in 1941 in Afrika then nothing until his wedding in 1948. I also have photos of the Flukolager being built. My question is does any one know how I find out the information of the men who were sent to AfrikaKorps from Gr. Betschkerek? I am wondering if my Oppa's brothers may have been sent at a later date. Their names are Stephan, Nikolaus and Mathias Kaiser. I am desperate to find my great uncles as they are the only link left in my family that may be alive. I know my family was in Gr Betschkerek at least until the death of my great grandmother Magdalena (Gangl) Kaiser in November 1944. Her husband (Nikolaus Kaiser) was last known to be in Steyr in 1948 but I am not sure if he was with his sons and youngest child Elisabeth Stephania Kaiser (she would have been about 13 or 14 years old at the time). He was at my Oppa's wedding in 1948 but I have no information on who survived and who didn't. I am looking for descendants and hope you can help re-unite me with my lost family. Any help with any information or insight to Banaters in the Afrika Korps would be greatly appreciated. Dear Mandy, i'm afraid, I can't hep you. But in Berlin, there's an office called "Deutsche Dienststelle WASt", which stores old records and files of the German Wehrmacht. Here's the link: http://www.dd-wast.de/ You have to be patient with the answer, for it might take 9 to 12 months till you get one. So be sure to ask for any data available, especially for the military career of your grandfather including the places he was based at. Talking about other relatives apart from your grandpa you might get no satisfying answer for privacy reasons because you are not a directly descendant of them. But maybe you are lucky. Be sure to have personal data available such asdate an place of birth etc.. They will charge you depending on the amount of data they find. But that should be in about 20 Euros. By the way, Mandy, please note, that Banaters from the Romanian part of the Banat were mostly drafted in 1943, at a time when the Afrika Korps was already destroyed. So apart from some exceptions there was no chance for the Romanian Banaters to see Africa. So your search can be most likely limited to the Yugoslavian Banat. For any further questions please feel free to ask. Kind regards Bernd Gesendet: Montag, 28. Hello Mandy, I've just come across an article that might be of interest : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Afrika_Korps Some of the German prisoners also were sent to Canada, not only to the U.S., as per a related document in French language. Hello friends of the community. I am familiar grandson of Tauss Stefan My family told he was in Bosnia with the family and in 1942 moved to Stuttgart and then enlisted to fight on the Eastern Front for the German troops. He survived the war and was taken to prison in Lodze, I think in Poland. Can you help me? have some information about it? Thanks and as always I leave a big greeting from Argentina. Tauss, Christian
I have found your posts very interesting and useful for the margert-logel-grunzweig branch of my husband's family. I am absolute stuck, however, trying to find any reliable information regarding the Koeppl, Koppl or Köppl branch. I understand that a Georg Koeppl or George Koeppl born in 1905 emigrated to US and married a Helene Margert in the US. Georg's father is listed as Christoph on the ship manifest, but Christoph is not listed as a passenger. I can find no birth records, death records, marriage records for Christoph or any variation of that name. Family information is scarce but suggests that the Koeppls lived in Bavaria near Teisnach. I apologize that this is not a Banat location, but I am asking for anyone's assistance in identifying additional information regarding Christoph Koppl. Thank you. Gina Krehbiel Koeppl

He is the son of Peter Oberkirsch and Angela Gross. He married Anna Maria Wagner born 18 July, 1801 in Sackelhausen and died 14 December, 1862. She is the daughter of Mathias Wagner and Margaretha Muller. Thank you for your consideration in this matter. Cheryl Oberkirsch
Jeff, Thank you very much! Everything matches with my previous research. Clearly I will need to get a copy of that second book. One copy of the first book exists in the Family History Library of the Mormon Church in Salt Lake City. It may even be that I am related to the author! Thanks Anne for the info. -----Original Message----- From: Anne Dreer via Sent: Monday, July 21, 2014 7:28 PM To: donauschwaben-villages@rootsweb.com Subject: [DVHH] Salasch Hello Barb, Salasch refers to a field away from the village that usually had some sort of barn or building on it. My grandfather had a large flock of sheep and the man that tended them would stay on the salasch for the summer. I know of one DS family who after they were expropriated from their house in used someone’s salasch as temporary place to live. Hi Dan, Thanks for you quick reply, it is very helpful. Thanks, Barb D -----Original Message----- From: Daniel Sedley Sent: Monday, July 21, 2014 6:58 PM To: Barb D Cc: DVHH Subject: Re: [DVHH] Area's Hi Barb, The Treaty of Trianon, signed on June 4, 1920 eliminated the existence of Austria-Hungary. It was a result of WWI. Many of our ancestors thus became subjects of newly created nations, including Romania. If your grandparents emigrated after that date, the papers would likely show Romania, even though they were originally residents of the Banat, part of Austria-Hungary. I don't have the exact site right now, but I have found good maps on Internet searches, showing which villages were in Torontal County or Temes County. Due to previous research, I am sure that Gottlob was in Torontal County and Deutsch Sankt Michael was in Temes County. All the best. Dan S. Excuse me if I correct your spelling: The area in Romania was called "Siebenbürgen". And you are right, the borders were changed post-WWI when the Austrian empire was reduced to what it is today. It was taken from Hungary and given to Romania as a reward for fighting on the Allied side during WW1. Are these villages in Transylvania? Many of the towns there had a large ethnic german population. ____________________________________ From: donauschwaben-villages@rootsweb.com Reply-to: bbd2424@gmail.com To: donauschwaben-villages@rootsweb.com Sent: 07/21/2014 05:37:43 P.M. Eastern Daylight Time Subj: [DVHH] Area's Hi, Can someone explain what year Gottlob, Deutsch St.Michael, Wojteg, Wiseschdia, went from being Austria –Hungary to Romania. Some of these towns when I enter them into my family tree give me an option of Torontal or Timmis and I need to know how to decide. Also my grandparents, would say they were from Austria-Hungary, but I think that when they came to the states they were really in Romania and all their papers say Romania. One more question. When my grandparents and their friends would talk they always would refer to Zillasch everyonewhy would they call it that when it was really DSM. Does anyone have any info on Zillasch (Sillash etc.) Thanks any & everyone who can help, Barb D. ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to DONAUSCHWABEN-VILLAGES-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to DONAUSCHWABEN-VILLAGES-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message
