Looking for any info on Susana Them and Peter Dishott from Fibis. Susana's parent's names?? They had a son Pal born Dec 14, 1839. Any other children?? Dishott may be spelled differently as the church records were a bit hard to read. Thank. Marge Sent from my iPhone
How very sad . . . she certainly contributed much--I can remember reading her material when I first studied my quest for family history. So young. May she rest in peace. Hi everyone, I¹ve been lurking ever so quietly for a long time now, so I do feel somewhat guilty that I only jump in to advertise for this oral history project. We¹ve got about 15 spots left (and if we go over, that¹s even better) before we stop interviewing after Christmas. The oral history project focuses on families who¹ve immigrated from Europe, come from a German cultural background (so Donauschwaben would be included) and somehow contributed to Waterloo Region here in Ontario, Canada (just west of Toronto). So we¹re looking for either immigrants themselves or their children (who¹d now be adults). The project doesn¹t refer just to the war/post-war generation. I even interviewed a young baker in his 30s who came here. Full details are on our website: http://wcgs.ca. Just click on the left on ³Oral History Project.² I¹ve started translating some of the interviews, and they are very interesting. The breadth of experiences of German/Austrian immigrants is incredible. (Swiss is also included in the scope of the project, but so far as I know, no one of German-Swiss heritage has volunteered yet.) Interesting tidbit: I¹m the only one who offered to transcribe two DS interviews because others found the dialect to be really difficult :) So I can¹t wait to do those ones (they¹re next on my list). Anyways, if you¹re interested in participating, you can contact me at work below. We can also do phone interviews if you (or your parents) no longer live in Waterloo Region. You¹d just need to be comfortable chatting on the phone, of course :) I likely won¹t be the one doing the interview, though I have done a couple of them. Interviewers are usually trained graduate students and once in a while a faculty member. I hope everyone has a nice week! Please feel free to get in touch with me if you have any questions at all. Tony: I wonder if this is the same as the documents my Grandfather Schwarz sent to the Department of External Affairs in Ottawa. Dated March 30, 1971 . File 81-8-YUGO >From the pages that were sent, I was able to take the information and apply for restitution to the Serbian Government. What is interesting enough is that when the property, land and 50 acres of vineyards in Ridjica was confiscated, our family held Canadian Citizenship and were British Subjects. (Actually I wasn`t born until 1942 and they returned in 1939). What a mistake that was!! I just wonder if that would help my case with Serbia right now, but I doubt it. This is some of what the Canadian Government wrote: `For your background information we might explain that it was possible for a former owner of expropriated property in Yugoslavia to obtain limited compensation under an agreement concluded in 1948 between British and Yugoslav Governments provided they had Canadian citizenship or other British subject status on January 1, 1949.` The letter goes on to say that if one did not apply by February, 1951 the could not get compensation. Apparently it was published in the `Canada Gazette`. What is the Canada Gazette - and who ever heard of it. Further in 1951, people were trying to pay back the monies that they borrowed for their flights and trying to save every penny. They were poorer than the poorest. They weren`t even in Toronto in 1948, but were with my great uncle in Cleveland having just been released from Gakowa or Krushivjle. O.K. I am going to post a little something and I am not sure if you all know but just in case - We all have a file number and fortunately I was able to obtain mine. I was able to call my file number up on the internet, and since I cannot read, write, in Serbian or in the old script of the language, I had to give it to someone else to decipher. The file is still sitting with the restitution committee and I doubt anyone will even look at it. However............There were errors on my claim. My paternal grandmother was listed as born in Kosovo in a town similar to Krushivjle, Batschka (Vovodina). It just so happens that she was born in Ridjica, Batschka which is a few km from Krushivjle. Batschka. My MATERNAL grandmother which has nothing to do with the claim was born in Krushivjle and lived there until she came to Canada in the 1920's. How on earth does this happen. It doesn't make sense. Where would this information come from??????? A request was made to the committee and they were asked to correct it. I haven't dared look as I am afraid, but I will!!! I firmly believe that had a request not been made, it would have been thrown out. Apparently I was told that their clerical staff made the error. Hello????? How does this happen. Also the Serbian Consulate in Toronto, Ontario gave me a run around while on the phone. When I went down with my documents for them to stamp they were refused because I did not use a lawyer recommended by them. Well, they never told me in the first place to use one of their lawyers. It was the worst day of my life dealing with them and I was totally, totally stressed. You can`t believe what he he was putting me through. Then he wanted me to come back to him and after I showed him what he requested, and then afterwards, I was to go downtown to the other Serbian Embassy. I telephoned the Serbian Embassy in Ottawa and spoke to a nice lady that was sympathetic. She connected me to the office of the chief. I left a message, and of course he never returned my phone call. I will continue to fight on regardless of any decision. Thank you, Rose Nicholas was my great grandfather. He married Victoria Karasz. The spelling changes make it so hard to search. Going to church records at FHC I found the 4 children. With each child the spelling changes. Szeghy, Szeghi, Saghi, Her death in 1903 used Saghy and listed Temerin. I assume that means where she was born. Johann (Joannes) died in 1895, Saghy was used there. Sombor was listed there but I never did find his birth in Sombor. I was hoping this was the marriage of Johann and Magdalena. It would explain why there were only 4 children since they were older but I can't find earlier children. Certainly if they moved to Palanka they would have brought his (and her) other children. Boys would have been married in the bride's home town. Nicholas married Victoria in Hodschag. My grandmother, Katharina (Katalin), was born there as well as 3 of her 7 sisters. Back to the search. Marlene I can't attach the picture of the recording of the wedding but I will send it to anyone who would like to see it. Dear Banat Family Researchers, The St. Hubert Family book is finally finished, and I have sent the manuscript to the AVBF in Germany for publication. Dave Dreyer and I are happy to have completed the work. At this time, we do not have a date for the availability of the book, or a price. I can tell you that the work is over 1,600 pages and includes over 6,300 families. We anticipate that it will be published as a 2-volume set. I will post info on price and availability as soon as I have that info. We are trying to estimate the number of copies for the printer. It would be very helpful to us if you could reply off-list, and confirm your interest in purchasing the books. Many thanks, --Karen Preston
