I too am researchingScottish Roots from the US (PA), > here is what I have. maybe someone on this list can match-up with my line! > There is a lot of Scottish information on Donaldsons Firstly the Scottidh GRO is on line There is Scottish name research at http://www.spiderweb.com.au/~frasbett/ There are the Scottish family history centres eg Aberdeen at http://www.rsc.co.uk/anesfhs/ The British 1891 Census is available from most genealogical sicieties or the LDS (25CDs) There are many, many Scottish genealogy sites. Start at Cindi's List as an example. I run a Donaldson one name study with about 1200 Donaldsons about half who were born in Scotland. I also have a lady in Falkirk, Scotland (on email) who for a very modest fee will do research at the GRO in Edinburgh. Great when I get stuck These are but a few ideas/suggestions -- John Donaldson Melbourne, Australia
I have been simi working on my DONALDSON'S, and I have read all the querys, so I suggest this web site and for you to search through it. http://www.electricscotland.c om/webclans/ The DONALDSON name is from the Scottish Clan of DONALD. This is a fascinating site, you will learn a lot. Also, if any of you come across my Adam Donaldson (b) 1767 in Scotland, he also listed a brother in his will named James, who still lived in England. Adam resided in Fredericksburg, Spotsylvania Co., VA. He married 9 Apr 1801 in Madison County to Eve HUFFMAN/HOFMANN. Adam died 9 Oct 1823 in Fredericksburg, Spotsylvania Co., VA and Eve died in 1830 in Fredericksburg, Spotsylvania Co., VA. I do not know where they are buried. Their only child: David Rutherford Donaldson (b) 1798 Fredericksburg, VA (d) bef. 1843 David married Priscilla HOWLETT. Pricilla Howlett is also mentioned in the will. Thanks for any help! Carol
Hi, I am researching the DONALDSON family of Peebleshire, Peebleshire Co. Scotland. Andrew Donaldson and wife Janet Kerr. Their daughter Catherine maried Gideon Hood, also of Peeblshire 14 July 1854, shortly after arriving in Ontario, Canada. Catherine was born in the early 1830s. She had a brother Andrew also. I need assistance in finding the parentage of Andrew Donaldson and Janet Kerr. Catherine Donaldson Hood died in California in 1912. Any and all help appreciated. Bob Smith
Hi Connie, My Donaldson's came to the US via Canada in 1950. My husband is a first generation American. So almost all of my research is over there. I am stuck in the early 1800's in Glasgow. As I am sure you know, Donaldson is a very common name. Good Luck! Kristi Donaldson scotlady@ees.eesc.com

I too am researchingScottish Roots from the US (PA), here is what I have. maybe someone on this list can match-up with my line! Unknown DONALDSON (possibly John) was born in the 1760's or 70's. He and his Unnamed wife had 4 children: 1. John (b. Perthshire SCT between 1796 and 1800) died in Washington Co. PA 1880. He married Mary Ann STEPHENS (1818-1872) 2. James (b Perthshire 1810) Lived in Washington Co, PA but disappeared in 1863, while in Arkansas, attempting to secure the release of his underaged son from a Confederate POW camp. He was married to Eliza CROW (1813-1847). 3. Catherine (?-?) Lived in or near London,Middlesex Co., Ontairo Canada. Married Hugh STEVENSON. (Hugh is listed in the 1871 Ontario Census). 4. Jane (?-?) Also lived in London, Ontario. Married William SHUTTS The family story, although I've seen no hard evidence of it, is that The elder Donaldson moved from Scotland to Canada (Quebec) in the early 1820's, where he died. After about 2 years in Canada, the two sons moved on to SW PA around 1826, where they settled on farms in Washington Co., PA. The two daughters remained in Canada where they married. My research hasn't taken me to Scotland (yet). I suspect I'll be led there soon if I can get past the generation I'm stalled on. ----- Original Message ----- From: Kristi A. I have here a social security application for Donald Christie Donaldson born March 22, 1894 at Fort Assiniboine, Montana, the son of Henry James Donaldson and Isabella Fenton. The application was filled out and signed by Donald on Feb 1, 1938. I got it because I was looking for my own grandfather born around that time, and was from Missouri. (This application was filled out in Missouri) This Donald is not related to me, I don't think, and I thought I'd mention it on the list to see if anyone related to this gentleman would like to get it. It costs $7 to send away for it. all the best, pd
In my previous email, I mis-typed the URL for my online site It should read: www.my-ged.com/donldson Thanks Mike Donaldson

He mounted his horse for a long dusty ride; His book and some quills were tucked close by his side. A long winding ride down a road barely there; Toward the smell of fresh bread wafting, up through the air. The woman was tired, with lines on her face; And wisps of brown hair she tucked back into place. She gave him some water ... as they sat at the table; And she answered his questions ... the best she was able. He asked of her children... Yes, she had quite a few; The oldest was twenty, the youngest not two. She held up a toddler with cheeks round and red; his sister, she whispered, was napping in bed. She noted each person who lived there with pride; And she felt the faint stirrings of the wee one inside. He noted the sex, the color, the age... The marks from the quill soon filled up the page. At the number of children, she nodded her head; And saw her lips quiver for the three that were dead. The places of birth she "never forgot"; Was it Kansas? or Utah? or Oregon ... or not? They came from Scotland, of that she was clear; But she wasn't quite sure just how long they'd been here. They spoke of employment, of schooling and such; They could read some .and write some .. though really not much. When the questions were answered, his job there was done; So he mounted his horse and he rode toward the sun. We can almost imagine his voice loud and clear; "May God bless you all for another ten years." Now picture a time warp ... its' now you and me; As we search for the people on our family tree. We squint at the census and scroll down so slow; As we search for that entry from long, long ago. Could they only imagine on that long ago day; That the entries they made would effect us this way? If they knew, would they wonder at the yearning we feel; And the searching that makes them so increasingly real. We can hear if we listen the words they impart; Through their blood in our veins and their voice in our heart. Author Unknown --part1_4229df97.24e359bf_boundary--
