He was born in Scotland about 1792 and married Elizabeth Smith who was born about 1797 possibly in England. Alexander may have been a Chelsea Pensioner as he came to Australia as a member of the Royal New South Wales Veteran'sCompany in 1828. He arrived in New South Wales and after a few months was transferred to Van Dieman's Land until the Company disbanded in late 1829. He was granted land at Geilston Bay near Hobart. Alexander died in Hobart in 1868 and Elizabeth died at Brown's River Road just outside Hobart in 1879. Their children were:- Robert b. 1829 Kilkenny, Ireland d. 1895 Castlemaine, Victoria unmarried another child born before arrival in Australia Alexander b. 1828 Hobart married 1852 Louisa Guest Elizabeth b. 1831 Hobart John b. 1832 Hobart d. 1811 Melbourne, Vic married 1850 Catherine Crawn/Craun (this is my line) William b. 1835 Hobart married 1863 Adelaide Chatterton. Also, William DONALDSON, John's brother, b. 1738, married Mary SWEENEY and moved to TN. John and Rachel were the parents of Rachel DONELSON who married Andrew JACKSON. -- Marge Boldin Milner >>> My family was one of the Tennessee DONELSONS. When I briefly looked into my family history several years ago, I wanted very badly to tie in my Donelsons to the family of John DONELSON. I have yet to be able to accomplish that. The first ancestor of my Donelson line I am aware of was: Robert Donaldson b. ABT 1730, Lived: 1755, Orange Co., N.C., m. Hannah _____, d. 1790, Caswell Co., North Carolina. Robert died 1770, Orange Co., North Carolina. I am wondering if there is a "tie-in" back to John Donelson's family in Virginia ??? To establish that, I would need to find Robert's father. That is one of my goals, but I have a feeling it might take a long while. Would you happen to have any information of DONELSONS living in the Sumner/Williamson/Robertson County TN? Thank you and Happy (Ancestor) Hunting! Kathleen Donelson-Westover --------------9A4D4B37D4536A00A80B58CB--

One of the two founders of Nashville, John Donelson joined with James Robertson to lead the first settlers to begin a new settlement on the Cumberland River at the French Lick. A land speculator and surveyor, Donelson served in the Virginia House of Burgesses before moving to the Watauga settlements on the Holston and Watauga rivers in East Tennessee in 1779. There he met James Robertson, and while Robertson led a group or mostly men and boys overland with pack horses and livestock, Donelson organized and led a flotilla of approximately thirty boats from the Holston River to the Tennessee, up the Ohio, and then up the Cumberland to the present site of Nashville, approximately 1000 miles. Most of Donelson's passengers were the wives and children of the men who went with Robertson. Because of repeated attacks by Indians, Donelson later moved his family north to Kentucky; but he continued to own and farm land in the Cumberland settlements. Donelson was mysteriously killed on the trail between Kentucky and Nashville in 1786. Children of JOHN DONELSON and RACHEL STOCKLEY are: i. ALEXANDER4 DONELSON, ii. MARY DONELSON, iii. At the time she was married but separated from her husband Lewis Robards of Kentucky. Robards eventually asked for a divorce and Rachel and Andrew were married in 1791. Two years later, they discovered that they had married before the divorce was final, and they remarried. The charge of adultery, however,--the problem of marrying before the divorce was final -- was used against Jackson in his campaigns for the presidency. A quiet, gentle person, Rachel was known for her warm hospitality, her love of flowers, and her religious devotion. She and Andrew had no children of their own but adopted one of her nephews, who became Andrew Jackson, Jr. Rachel died in December just after her husband won his campaign for the presidency. 4. xii.
