I have just begun searching my family history and hope that someone out there may have some information which may help me. My grandfather was Frederick Thomas DOHERTY, born in Birmingham on 18.2.1884. He had the following brothers and sisters: Ernest born 1876 approx Alfred born 1878 approx Frank born 1880 approx Gertrude born 1886 approx Emily born 1889 approx Herbert born 1890 approx His parents were Selina WILSON born in Birmingham in approximately 1858 and John Lawerance DOHERTY born in Birmingham in approximately 1856. They were married in Birmingham on 11.1.1876. Their marriage certificate states John Lawerance DOHERTY's surname to be DONRETTY but census records show the name to be DOHERTY, which is the name followed through by our family. Unfortunately, I have as yet been unable to locate a birth certificate for John Lawerance DOHERTY or DONRETTY but am constantly researching this. His father is stated on his marriage certificate to be Patrick LAWERANCE and an address and occupation are given for him. I would suspect that his name was actually Patrick Lawerance DOHERTY since it would be unlikely that the father of an illegitimate child would be named on the child's marriage certificate.
