Quoting from a copywritten piece is not necessarily a breach of law. The quotation would be weighed on the basis of the effect of use on the potential market for or value of the use. Also weighed would be the fact that a listserve was not a business proposition, but a research tool. Section 107 of the US copywrite code states that [paraphrased here] use of copys of protected material for educational or research purposes is not a violation of copywrite law.
