    3. Dodson List, Dodson-DNA, Dodson-UK Hi lists, I am leaving these lists as administrator of this list and looking for a new admin. My health is not real good now and I am taking the time to adjust. To let you know, I am recovering from prostrate cancer, it was got to quickly but I am having a rough time with it and adjusting to the loss of my mother last month to ovarian cancer. It's been a scary time for all of us. Just keep us in your prayers. Allen Lawrence List admin The only people with whom you should try to get even are those who have helped you. John E. My father (John Murray Dodson) was born in Tasmania, Australia around 1912 – we are not too sure when because he has been a bit of a ‘mystery man’ so far as our family is concerned –we have very little information about him. I heard – through my namesake, Michael Dodson of Atlanta who I have now lost touch with now informed me there was a ‘Book of Dodsons’, if it exists I would like to obtain a copy. I live in Canberra, Australia which is our capital city. I’d very much appreciate any information you could provide. I don’t exactly know where the name comes from but I’m assuming one of my ancestors came to Australia at some stage during the colonial period and settled in Tasmania Cheers Mick Dodson Dodson, Bauman & Associates Pty Ltd. 1. Re: [DODSON-UK] DOOTSON to GREGORY why?
    2. David Lamb
    3. Hello, Do you know when James DOOTSON (the one who married Mary SEDDON) died? Perhaps he died between 1841 and 1851, and Mary remarried, this time to someone surnamed GREGORY. It is possible that all the children were from then on known as GREGORY. Looking at the 1881 Census (which I realise you might well have done already, so please forgive me if this is all "old news"), I found: John GREGORY, born Westhoughton 1829, (which could mean 1828 as his birthday came after the census) living at 39 Kirkless St, Wigan, Lancashire. He was married, and working as a grocer. His wife Elizabeth was aged 46, also born at Westhouhton. Their 8 children (or at least the 8 living with them on census night 1881) were all born in Ince, Lancashire, which I think is sometimes known as Ince in Makerfield, and is only a mile or two from both Wigan and Westhoughton. All were unmarried in 1881. The children were: Thomas, age 18, Labourer in coal mine; Richard, age 16, labourer in coal mine; Roger, age 14, grocers assistant; Joseph, age 12, scholar; Mary A., age 9, scholar; Charles, age 6, scholar; Eliza A., age 2. James GREGORY, born Westhoughton, age 44, Clerk in Silk Mill. He was living at 15 Breckley Street, Pennington In Leigh, Lancashire (about 4 miles from Westhoughton) with his wife Margaret, age 45, born Westhoughton, and their two children both born in Westhoughton, James E., age 18, grocer's assistant, and Beatrice, age 16. Richard GREGORY, born Westhoughton, age 41, Blacksmith, living at Lock Lane, Rumworth, Lancashire (can't find it on a map, but it seems to have been very close to Westhoughton, as everyone listed as living in Rumworth on the census seems to have been born in Westhoughton). He was married to Elizabeth, age 36, born Stockport, Cheshire (about 18 miles from Westhoughton). Their children, all but one, William, born in Rumworth, were: Margaret, age 14, cardroom hand at cotton mill; Alice, age 13, cardroom hand at cotton mill; William, age 10, born Lostock, Lancashire, scholar; Peter, age 6, scholar; John, age 1. Roger GREGORY, age 39, born Westhoughton, grocer, living at 22 & 24 Shop Castle Hill Road, Hindley, Lancashire (about 2 miles from Westhoughton) with his wife Jane, age 42, born Hindley, and their children, all born Hindley: Samuel, age 18, assistant grocer; James, age 16, assistant grocer; Mary Ellen, age 14, scholar; Jane Ann, age 12, scholar; Roger Gregory (He is down as Roger Gregory GREGORY - possibly a mistake?), age 10, scholar; Clara W., age 7, Scholar; John T., age 5, scholar; Peter E., age 3. Charles GREGORY, age 37, born Westhoughton, living at 8 Pendlebury Terrace, Westhoughton with wife Margaret, age 36, born Westhoughton, Silk Weaver, and children, all born Westhoughton: William, age 14, Screen at Colliery; Mary, age 9, scholar; James, age 7, scholar; John, age 5, scholar; Eliza Ann, age 9 months. Samuel GREGORY, age 35, born Westhoughton, Master Joiner and Beerhouse Keeper, living at 19 & 21 Chapel Green Queens Head Beer House, Hindley, Lancashire with his wife Elizabeth, age 35, born Hindley, and children, all born Hindley: Mary, age 14, cotton mill reeler; Emily, age 12, scholar; Margaret A., age 10, scholar; Eliza, age 7, scholar; Edith, age 4; Charles, age 2; Frederick, age 9 months. I nearly missed the entry for Jonathan GREGORY, because his birthplace is written as "West Houghton", so my search for someone born at Westhoughton didn't show him, but I did find him in the end, age 33, grocer's assistant, living at 35 & 37 Ward Street, Hindley, with his wife Jane, age 25, born Mawdsley, Lancashire, and children James, age 5, born Up Holland, Lancashire (about 9 miles from Westhoughton), scholar; Jonathan, age 3, born Hindley; Thomas, age 1, born Hindley. Incidentally, I shouldn't worry about "John" and "Jonathan". Although similar, they are not the same name, and though both derive from the Hebrew meaning "gift of Jehovah", "John" comes to us via the Greek "Ioannes". Regarding the riddle of the name change, what do the birth certificates and marriage certificates of the children say? Take Jonathan, for example. He was born well after the 1841 census, though before that of 1851. Was he registered as "Jonathan DOOTSON" or as "Jonathan GREGORY"? What is the father's name given on the certificate? Then if you look at any marriage certificate for one of James and Mary's children (assuming they were all children of James and Mary), what name is given for the father there? If you are not sure how to go about getting a UK certificate, let me know off list, and I will try to give some information. Well, I hope that gives a little help. Mary SEDDON marrying James DOOTSON on 1 sep 1828 at Hindley. This was a double wedding with Samuel DOOTSON, wife unknown. Children all born Westhoughton. John 26 July 1828 no baptism found Margaret 1830 probably died in infancy Thomas 1833 Ann 1834 James 1836 Richard 1839 Roger 16 May 1841 My gt.grandfather Charles 1844 Samuel 1846 Jonathan 1848 funny having 2 Johns but at 20 years apart the first one would most likely have left home by the time the second one was born. On 1841 Census this family was known as DOOTSON. However, by the time the 1851 Census was taken they had changed their name to GREGORY. If anyone can help solve this mystery please get in touch.
