Karen-- You're right, the Smoots don't make any sense, yet that is what the IGI and ancestral files and everyone else has been printing for a long time. We have pretty much decided we're not related to the Smoots anyway (did I send you the Durham paper?), though there is some sort of connection as yet unfigured out. I'm probably confused on the William Hanks, my brain was beginning to go after typing in all that stuff! Sarah Durham was the niece of Mary Durham who married Thomas Dodson Sr.; the daughter of Mary's brother Thomas and Mary Smoot (how's that for confusion?!) Maybe someone else will correct me and then we'll know for sure! I've just looked through my Hanks stuff, and Luke Hanks married about 1719, so I think you're probably right, it probably was his NEPHEW William Hanks III who married Sarah Durham.
