    3. Cousins, If Dorothy Smoot Durham was a sister of William Smoot, Jr., and if William Smoot, Sr died intestate after having settled property on his older daughters, then everything fits. William Smoot (1) moved from VA to MD in 1646 with two sons, Thomas and Richard. At that time he is presumed to be almost 50 years old. The widow Grace Wood is likely his 2nd wife. In 1642, William was claiming to have transported himself and at least 7 others to VA between 1633 and 1646. So he could have possibly brought children of his first marriege to VA. An older son, William (2) could have established a family in VA before '46 and therefore not moved to MD. A later birthdate for William (2) is commonly given because he was not named for headright to MD in '46, but consider that he could have been born circa 1620 to 1625 and married by '46. I have been told that many genealogist skip a generation here or there. Three William Smoots between 1600 and 1700 seem more likely all the time. Brian Walls Columbia, Maryland
