Other theories: I estimate William Smoot's year of birth as about 1651 based on Newman. So, if Dorothy were born about 1663, then William would have been much too young to be the father. However, we do not know how he arrived at that date so there could be a lot of variation between this date and the actual date. Also, it has not been proven with any certainty that the William Smoot of Old Rappahannock County (Richmond County), Virginia is the son of William Smute of Maryland. But lets save that debate for another day. I have also just learned that there was probably a son to the William Smoot of Richmond County, VA. The documentation is from Richmond County Deeds, 1695-1701: KNOW ALL MEN by these presents that I JOHN MILLS have nominated & appointed WILLIAM SMOOT JUNR. my true & lawfull Attorney to deliver to Mr. WILLIAM RICHARDSON a Deed of Land to him & his heirs forever. If so, he would have had to have been at least 21 in the year 1700 to be an attorney, right? Therefore, he would have been born about 1679 at the latest. I'm not aware of any other documents which refer to this William Smoot, Junr. so I'll assume (for now) he died before 1716 when his father died since he wasn't mentioned in the will. Perhaps, he died around 1706 without a will or heirs. What would have happened to his debts, land, etc. Would William Smoot and Jane need to deed his property to Juniors debtors? Could William Smoot be part of the missing link to Dorothy? Is it possible that William Smoot, Junr. married Dorothy? Also, does anyone have the wording of Elizabeth Grady's will?
