David Dodson Jr., appears in the property tax rolls in 1791 and continues until 1796. He is a witness to a deed in 1801 in Culpeper County. His wife Lucy is listed as a widow on the 1810 Culpeper County Census. Presumably, David Jr., between 1801 and 1810 with an estimate of about 1805. In addition to J. Miller Dodson there was at least one male of about the same age and two daughters born between 1794 and 1805. J. Miller, AKA Miller Dodson, was probably John Miller Dodson. Miller Dodson and his descendents lived in the Hazel Mountain area of Madison County, VA. Miller appears on the 1820 & 1830 Culpeper census, on the 1840 Rappahannock County census and on the 1850 Madison County census, #651. He also appears on the Rapp. Co. Personal Property tax list for the years 1833-1840 and on the list of taxable property in the county of Culpeper for 1835. He paid $2.64in taxes. He also purchased at the estate sale of William Brown which is recorded in the Rapp. Co. Will Book, page 153. On 21 Sept. 1818 J. Miller Dodson chose James Dodson as his guardian, so presumably his father was dead at that time which would mean that the only possibilities for J. JENKINS January 24, 1856 in Madison County VA, daughter of ELKANA "CAIN"JENKINS and MARY GAINES. He married (2) JANE WOODARD August 03, 1894 in Madison County VA. In the 1880 Madison County census Andrew's Mother-in-law, Mary Jenkins, 80. Her husband, Elkanah Jenkins is presumed to be dead. years old was living with the family. By 1894, apparently Lucy was dead and Andrew married Jane Woodard. Andrew was a member of Company L, 10th Battalion. ? Civil War. Recorded in Vol 1, page550 of VA records. BELL FIELD DODSON was born February 1864 in Madison County VA, and died May 1938 in Renick, WV. He married JUDITH FRANCIS SMITH December 22, 1885 in Madison County, VA. Bell Dodson was one of two brothers who left Syria (Searie) VA (near Madison) to move to other parts of the country. In Searie Bell worked as a cooper and a farmer. Bell moved his family to WV where he worked as a blacksmith until his legs failed. He then worked as a cobbler. He was known for his good nature and as being a very hard worker at his trade. He was a large man with a full beard. The Chestnut Tree blight of the late 1800s and the loss of work that it caused may have been the motivating factor in the Dodson Brothers decision to leave the mountains of Virginia. His wife Judith was also from Syria, VA and moved to WV with her husband Bell. She was a very enterprising lady who ran a hat business in Renick, WV. She took orders and sold hats to ladies throughout the area. She and her husband operated a small shop in their house on front street in Renick. Children of BELL DODSON and JUDITH SMITH are: i.
