Jack > Mayhew, jmayhew050@aol.com This is pure conjecture and I hope someone will tell me if there is any truth to it: I have heard that in the late 1700's the governor of North Carolina set an impossibly high tax on all citizens with severe penalties if it wasn't paid. I've heard that's why the movement from NC to parts northward occurred. Many of those moving stopped for a while in the Russell/Scott/Wise Counties area of Virginia which at the time was Russell County. Could it have been as simple as the Dodson to Dotson by mispellings by court clerks recording papers? Or the handwriting of the time mis-reading a T for a D? I would be tickled to hear anyone 's facts on the matter.
