Having seen quite a few examples of ancestrial handwriting, one possibility might be the way one Dodson ancestor might have penned his or her name. I have even seen it in some modern chicken-scratch where one person made their small "d" in such a way as to eventually make the circle part almost invisible and 'crossing' the upright on the way to meet the "s" therefore making the DODSON look more like DOTSON.
