Kathleen, Are you talking about the book "The Dodson (Dotson) Family of North Farnham Parish, Richmond Co., Virginia" by The Rev. Silas Emmett Lucas, Jr.? If so, I have that set of books and it does have an index. The only Sampson Dodson I find in them was born c1809 and died 23 June 1877, and his father was Nimrod Dodson.
