I appreciate Glenn's lsiting information about my Dotson ancestor. I have a 400+ page book: "Richard Dotson (1752-1847) and his Descendants" by James M. Dotson and Barr Wilson. I'll be glad to look up information if anyone thinks they descend from Richard (aka James). Listed below are ALL the children proported to belong to Richard and his 3 or 4 wives. When Richard's son William died, William's wife reported that William's parents were Richard and Mary. Below are some of my notes: Per Jim Dotson, males living in Shenandoah Co at time of Richard's birth who COULD be his father are John, Peter, Charles, Samuel, William, David and Thomas Sr. Richard:10/23/1752 born in Shenandoah (now Frederick Co,) VA and lived 20 years there 1774 In Greene Co, PA (served as Indian spy from 1774-1779) under Capt Minor on the VA & PA frontiers 1776-1781 May have lived on Big Whitely River in now Greene Co, PA Greene Co was created from Washington Co, PA in 1796. >From Penna Archives, Series VI, Vol 2 pp 18-19 & pg 271: 1782 1st Battalion, Washington County, Recruited in Whiteley and Greene Twnships (now Greene Co) a few from Dunkard: CAPTAIN: John Guthrey; Eleazer Clegg, Lt; Richard Dotson, Sergeant; Gideon Long, Ensign, John Roberts, Sergeant; Mathew Hanon/Hennen, Sergeant; Some privates were: Peter Yoho;Isaac Bozarth;Henry Yoho; John Sayer; etc. Note says: These men also served tours with Capt John Guthery; Samuel Swindler, Cecil Davis, John Minor and John Shipman. 1779 in Fairmont area near Decker's Creek near Morgantown VA. 1783 and later lived in Shenandoah, Loudoun, Hampshire, Wood and Tyler Co VA. In 1800 when Richard came to Toll Gate area (now Doddridge Co, WV), 2 sons William and Emanuel would have been ages 25 & 26, came with him with their families. We know some of the children of Richard and Mary Dotson were killed by Indians In tax records in Shenandoah Co for 1784-86 other Dotsons or Dodsons appearing with him were Thomas, Thomas Jr. Samuel, William and Peter. 1802--600 acres in Clay District Ritchie Co(W)VA. Low gap between Buck Run & Yeager Run following Buck Run to right hand fork. Believe he gave Emmanuel and William a portion of this land. Until WWII owned by Richard Dotson's descendents. Richard's daughter Ruth married a James Cain who served under Capt John Bozarth. Reference Indian episode where a Mrs Bozarth saved Richard Dotson from being killed by Indian. And note an Isaac Bozarth in above 1st battalion. The Bertha Sellers Dotson information/Barr Wilson and the Franks Family history say that Richard m Sarah Jeanne Hollyday about 1772. They may accept that much, but suggest information beyond Sarah is incorrect. On June 1, 1840 Richard Dotson was age 88 and living with James Dotson Sorry this is so wordy, but hope springs eternal I might link him up some day. My "pet theory" has always been that he descended from Bartholomew Richard's son James whose birth is recorded never to be heard from again. Betty
