Hoenstine (Hollidaysburg PA, 1940) p. 35. > Bedford County PA in the American Revolution, James B. Whisker (Apollo PA, 1985) p. 76. > Cemeteries of Freedom Twp. Vol.1, Blair County Genealogical Society (Hollidaysburg PA, 1991) p. 13. > > I havent been to the cemetery to view the stones. I think the most accurate transcription of the information on the two stones comes from a report, found at the Blair County Genealogical Society, prepared by Boy Scout Troop 59 (Newry, PA) who cleaned up the cemetery: > > Row 5, #8 M. D. B. S. 6 1751 > Dec No 9 1830 > > Row 5, #9 T. D. B M 11 1741 > DI May 24 1831 > Revolutionary War Veteran > > M. D. is assumed to stand for Michael Dodson. I think this is not Michael Dodsons grave but probably is the grave of the wife of Thomas Dodson. > > While there is no doubt Michael Dodson spent a large portion of his adult life in what is now Blair County PA, there is considerable doubt that he died and is buried there. Two sources (which, admittedly, are not the most reliable sources a researcher could hope for) indicate that Michael Dodson died in Ohio. > > A Portrait & Biographical Record of Putnam County, Ohio A.W. Brown & Co. (Chicago, 1896) at pages 147-148, in a biographical note on Michael Dodsons grandson Francis Marion Dotson, states that Michaels son Joseph, born in Blair county, Pa., April 2, 1794, settled in Muskingum County, Ohio and purchased land in neighboring Morgan County. Michael Dodson came to Ohio and lived in Muskingum county with his son Joseph, the father of our subject, and died either in Muskingum or Morgan county. In this note the spellings Dottson and Dotson are used. > > I have a copy of what appears to be a reprint of a newspaper article entitled A Long-Lived Family The Dodsons Have a Remarkable Record, which is said to have appeared in the Altoona Mirror on October 12, 1906. It states The next generation was Michael Dodson, born May 10, 1759. He served in the War of 1812. He emigrated to Ohio in 1827, and died there, May 15, 1828, aged sixty-nine years and five days. Margaret Dodson, his wife, died February 15, 1834, aged seventy-four years, eleven months and thirteen days. I think the War of 1812 reference is incorrect. > > If Michael Dodson was born in 1759 (rather than 1751 as indicated on the grave stone) he would have been about 17 years old when he first enlisted in 1776, the same age at enlistment given in the Putnam County biographical note. Also, Michael Dodsons age is listed as 53 on the 1814 list of taxables in Greenfield Township, which would put his birth closer to 1759 than to 1751. In his 1800 census he is not yet 45. > > Michael Dodson is found in the 1800, 1810 and 1820 censuses in (then) Bedford County. He is not found there in the 1830 census, although the stone gives a death date of No 9 1830. His son Josephs 1830 census listing in York Township, Morgan Co. OH includes an elderly female in her 70s, quite possibly Michael Dodsons widow. > > Another problem with the dates on the M. D. stone comes from a family group sheet and correspondence of Floyd G. Hoenstine, found in his Dodson notebook at the Blair County Genealogical Society. Citing Family Records Bible the family group sheet says that Michael Dodson was born May 10, 1759 and died May 15, 1828. In a letter to a client, dated May 21, 1962, Hoenstine states A Bible record of Michael Dodsons family has been preserved and I have photostatic copies of it. This record states that he was born May 10, 1759 and died May 15, 1828, however, the headstone inscription shows born Sept. 6, 1751 and died Nov. 9, 1830. His wife was Margaret Justice, born Mar 2, 1759 and died Feb. 15, 1834. He was first assessed for the year 1792 in this area. A big caveat: the photostatic copies of the bible records are not found in his Dodson notebook and I was not able to locate them at the Blair County Genealogic! > al Society, despite the assistance of a very helpful and knowledgeable staff person (Annie Whiteman). Perhaps they are with the Lingenfelter records? > > I am attempting to locate a final payment voucher for Michael Dodsons Revolutionary War pension, which may give a date of death. I havent found records of the graves of Michael Dodson and his wife in the published cemetery transcriptions for Harrison Township, Muskingum County, Ohio or for abutting York Township, Morgan County, Ohio. > > [As to whether Michaels wife was Margaret Justice, I have no other documentation regarding her identity. It is quite possible that Michael Dodson married a Margaret Justice and that his son Joseph Dodson also married a woman with the same name, possibly aunt and niece. Census records indicate Josephs wife Margaret was born in PA about 1800, and the Putnam County biographical note states that Josephs wife was Margaret Justice, a daughter of Jesse Justice. I am only beginning to look at the Justice family but I believe that Jesse Justice died in Bedford Co. PA about 1813, and that he and several of his brothers moved up from Frederick Co., (or possibly present-day Carroll Co.) MD. Online sources indicate Jesse had a sister Margaret who is said to have married a John Dodson or a Joseph Dodson. Much work needs to be done.] > > Getting back to the M. D. and T. D. stones, how likely is it that two elderly, married men are buried side by side, within about 7 months of each other, in marked graves, and no stones are found for their wives? I believe that Michael Dodson and his wife are not buried in this cemetery and that M. D. is probably the wife of Thomas Dodson. Thomas Dodsons 1830 census in Greenfield Township indicates he was in his 80s and she was in her 70s, which fits the stones dates well. I have no documentation on the identity of his wife. The only clue I have comes from a couple online postings by other researchers who suggest his wife was Molly Seabrook. Very possibly M. D. > > The Putnam County OH biographical note lists Michael Dodsons children as: > John > Joseph b. April 2, 1794 > Thomas > Samuel > Annie. > > Hoenstines family group sheet, citing the bible records, lists his children as: > John b. Nov.14, 1787 [This is my ancestor, who settled in Indiana Co. PA.] > Joseph b. Apr. 2, 1794 > Thomas b. Apr. 25, 1796 > Samuel b. Oct. 9, 1798 > Ann b. Dec.10, 1800, d. Aug. 25, 1822, married to ____Conrad. > > For what its worth, the Putnam County biographical note gives Michaels father as William, who married a Welsh lady. The newspaper reprint says Michaels father was John, and Johns wife was from Wales. I suspect Michaels father was Michael Dodson, son of Thomas Dodson and Mary Prigg, who married a Welsh lady, Ann Evans, in Chester Co, PA and who was living in Maryland by 1760. > > > > > ==== DODSON Mailing List ==== > The best tool on the net!
